I've decided to replay DA:O, don't have the expansions or DLC but it seems like maybe patches have changed some things or maybe it's that first time I played I was on normal difficulty (playing on hard now).

So far I've got my sort of standard base-
heal and group heal
up to cone of cold(of course) in frost
walking bomb and death siphon

What I'm undecided on is I've got roughly 7 more points to spend between -

Crushing Prison line
Hex line
Glyph line
Sleep line

Sleep is easy to use with a huge radius, but the paralysis combo with repulsion seems to be stronger. The neutralization glyph pretty much shuts down mages too. The waking nightmare is what makes it hard to choose though. Also have to consider the first point in the sleep line is a bit of a dud.

I remember crushing prison being amazing but it seems to get
resisted so frequently I'm not sure about it this time - the damage as
well as the hold effect, whereas I remember the damage working on almost
everything before. I know telekinetic weapons is really good anyway,
but I could give that to my second mage (Wynn).

As for the hex line, I'll definitely take at least the first hex, and I feel like it's worth going all the way in but I'm not sure if I should do that earlier or later.

I'm a big fan of Mind Blast and Force Field, regardless of mage build. Just recently started using Telekinetic Weapons and Crushing Prison (figured I'd go all the way down that line) and am now a fan as well.

I'm also playing on Hard difficulty this playthrough and am up to the Elven Alienage with all side quests done up to that point, and I haven't noticed Crushing Prison being resisted unusually frequently. I originally meant for it to be just crowd control but mages especially tend to die or at least take tons of damage from the squeeze, so it's a great way to take them out.

Ahh...so many playthroughs and builds to explore, so little time!

I love the Misdirection Hex, since I can have my mages attract the aggro points from bosses all they want (it combines nicely with Walking Bomb spells and Crushing Prison well that way).

I'm taking the Sleep line in my current playthrough and while I like the combo with Horror, I think you might be right about the paralysis explosion being better. Waking Nightmare is a bit of a disappointment since enemies aren't often clustered so closely that its small radius can affect many of them. Still, the downside of the glyphs is that they're harder to target.

So, if I only had 7 points to spend, I would spend 4 in the Crushing Prison line and 3 in Hex line (although I don't usually have a melee-heavy party, so the Death Hex isn't as helpful for me).

Take my advice with a grain of salt, though. I specifically avoid many power-gamer strategies like spamming Shatter or taking Spell Might, etc., and I include Glyph of Neutralization in the list of spells I always exclude as too cheesy, so my opinions are likely suboptimal from that perspective.

The crushing prison line is, in my opinion, one of the best spell lines in the game. Each one a winner. Force field is great for shutting off key problem enemies and for saving your tank, crushing prison does effectively the same thing while dishing out damage too (though it was slightly gimped with the last patch. Still a winner though) Mind blast is great for getting the heat off, and a weapons enchantment is always great. What's not to love? 4 points right here please.

That aside, the other three you mentioned all have their charms. I take it you want your mage to be a crowd controller, because right now I don't imagine you're actually doing much damage. Which is fine if you're taking around a damage-heavy party? I suppose from here it depends who you usually take around with you. If you take tanks and need some help taking down single boss targets, go hex line. If you want more spells controlling trash mobs, the glyph and sleep lines are both good (excluding Waking Nightmare, which is terrible. But Sleep makes up for it by being brilliant).

Storm of the Century will cut through everything. Get Morrigan to cast blizzard + your mighted tempest for instant oblivion.

Also don't forget Mana clash, one of the BEST spell in the game to kill mages. Including yourself(Pun intended) when it crashes your game. lol
