I've created a folder called Bioware>Mass Effect 2 > Save > Name_11_Soldier_010210>AutoSave.pcsav.

I originally created that on the same portion of my harddrive (Programs) that all my games are saved on. I then copied and pasted it into My Documents folder as I saw there was a Mass Effect 3 folder in that area, minus the Bioware folder (the rest was the same). Is it the copy/pasting that's killing me?

That should be the correct location, and autosaves are available for import (I am viewing a list of eligibile saves for a Mass Effect 3 start, and an AutoSave is within the list).

I don't own a copy of ME2 on my PC but I created the folder that should read the same. I'm stumped.

*Edit: I'm noticing the final file (The Auto Save) is showing an Adobe PDF logo beside it and when I try to redownload from Epic Legion's site it's automatically trying to open it as a PDF.  Should I change what the default program that opens it is?  Would that alter anything?

The icon could indicate a strange file association on your computer, but that should not affect the ability to use the save in a Mass Effect game.

I recommend opening the save file in Gibbed's (modified) Mass Effect 2 save editor ( http://social.biowar.../project/4373/ ).  Click the "Raw" tab and look at the "Plot" table for "End Game State".  It should be set to "LivedToFightAgain".  If it is not, then Mass Effect 3 will not detect it.

Whenever I go to open up Gibbed Save Editor I have an issue. I download it, open the file and click the .exe save editor and almost immediately a box comes up saying "Gibbed Save Editor is not working, searching for solutions" or something along those lines. I'm using Windows 7 - any idea what the issue is or how to get it going?

EDIT * : Nevermind, I got Gibbed going.  Had the wrong default program set to try an open, resolved that particular issue.  Thanks.

I got Gibbed up and running, downloaded a save file from Mass Effect Saves and loaded it up. Changed some values in Gibbed, for instance changed from an Earthborn to a Spacer. When I save, close, and reopen in Gibbed everything looks good, but when I go to import in Mass Effect 3 it goes back to showing as Earthborn. Any ideas?

The save game directory will be in the format of <Name>_<TwoNumbers>_<class>_<Date>

I suspect that the second number of <TwoNumbers> is not 2 (it is likely 3).  Changing it to 2 will fix the problem.  Note that this problem may be cosmetic; the importer may be reporting your character to be Earthborn but will still import the character as a Spacer.  The importer is reporting information derived from the directory name, rather than from the save file.

Interesting. So when I start it up it might actually be correct when I start the game up. I'll give it a whirl. Thanks for all the help Dimensio - you've been very helpful.

I've done both of the guides, on here and the version on game FAQs, Have one of the save files sitting in C:\\\\users\\[user]\\Desktop\\BioWare\\Mass Effect 2\\Save\\Nightwind_32_Soldier_010210, boot up the game, not there. i will say, im doing this without access to my ME2, lent it to a friend and he's giving it back to me tomorrow

Your save folders and file should be in Documents, not Desktop.

1 last question if you don't mind
Does the save you try to convert have to come from a file ending in ######_0? It seems that the only character the ME3 importer will recognize is the only one that had a file name ending in _0.

The "_0" suffix notes that an otherwise identical save file exists.  It is only added when another file of the same name exists as the one being created; none of my saves use it and all are importable.

Here i thought it was the folder created when a character beats the game, must have made a new game+ and not remembered. No idea why the other characters aren't working now. *Sigh* I'll figure it out after work.

I have a question.

I've played ME 1 and 2 on my old Xbox, with my old profile. When I bought a new Xbox, I created a new profile and thus, I can't use my save game from ME2 on my new profile for ME3. Since my email I used for the profile was lost, there is no way to recover it on my new Xbox.

Is it possible to transfer the ME2 save game from my old XBox profile to the PC, convert it to a PC save game, change it back to an XBox save game and use that for ME3 on my new Xbox profile? Will this process clear the save game from only being useable on my old profile?

Has anyone tried this for ME1 from Xbox to ME2 for PC? Does it have to be a ME2 save game?

The modio link may be dead, but the file is not. Used google cache quick and here's the link for modio 3 download: http://www.mediafire...010lt6on0114h63

I took a look at this last night. .MassEffectSave files are archives. You can extract them to the three separate files and then rezip them and they work (the pc saves) as long as you rename them back to the proper extension.

Regarding the 360 saves (I'm also interested in this as I played ME1 on 360 originally and have my main save there), you can extract the user profile and it will detect properly and display the correct info for your character. The issue is the save files themselves. I tried zipping them into .MassEffectSave format, but it was unable to read the extracted 360 save files... or rather it detected the save files but couldn't read the data inside them.

I compared files in notepad++ and there appears to be extra content at the start of the PC saves. I tried pasting that to the start of 360 saves, but it didn't appear to help. I noticed 7zip reported that the pc saves had an offset, so I don't know if that had anything to do with it and/or encryption on the save file itself. Ideally someone would be able to make a file converter to just decrypt the .sav files and re-encrypt them in pc format.

There also are a bunch of suppress statements in the ini files (bioengine.ini and defaultengine.ini). Perhaps changing some of them would allow 360 saves to be used, as the game was originally a 360 port if I'm not mistaken.

I might toy with this a little more, but it'll probably take someone else with more skills than me. Slightly beyond my expertise.

ME2 you can using these utilities so long as you have access to the usb stick or hard drive. Just extract the files to pc and then use that site to upload and convert them to 360 format and possibly need to resign with modio again? Haven't done this myself since I'm going in the other direction (360->pc)

Re: ME1 saves, if modio will let you resign it with your new credentials you should be able to.

One thing, if you still have access to the old xbox/can sign in, you may be able to change the email for it via the console itself. Alternatively, you might try giving MS a call and seeing if they can help you out recovering it to your new system.

Note: as I understand it if you made a custom shep in ME1, you'll need to use a 3rd party tool to fix the face mesh before importing to ME3 since there weren't any face codes in ME1.
