Toughest character possible: dwarf Berserker with St 18/xx, dex 17, con 19, int 11. Use Wisdom as a dumpstat and move any remaining points to charisma (not strictly necessary, but it makes playing the game slightly more comfortable).
Give him proficiencies in axes and any other weapon you like. Long Swords, flails and Warhammers will all suit him well. As you progress in the game, you may want to invest in Two weapon fighting.
You'll end up with an incredible tank with amazing hitpoints and saving throws.

Perhaps you can tell more about what party you played with and what problems you ran into, so we can give more specific advice?uberdowzen wrote...
So, depressing though it is, I've decided I need to restart BG1.
Thanks!
Me and other users put some standard advice for people new to the game in this topic, you might find helpful tips there.

For first timers I indorse the bow (long or short is fine) as this weapon allows you the option of running away… a valid tactic when you find the odds against you. The only exception is people that want to go cleric in which case the bow becomes worthless.

I turned the difficulty down without realising it would decrease my XP gain so I got stuck at the fight just outside the second mine. My party was me (as an underpowered fighter I'm now beginning to realise), Jaheira, Khalid, Minsc, Imoen and Dynaheir (who I just realised while looking up the spelling is voiced by Jennifer Hale). Is that a good party? I took Dynaheir because I wanted Minsc and I felt bad leaving Imoen as she's so nice but I don't really have any attachement to Jaheira and Khalid.

As for your team as a whole, they are fine and are the game's 'canon' party. Basically they are the NPCs Baldur's Gate 2 assumes you completed Baldur's Gate 1 with, so they can't be all that bad.
I think what will make your team better than just 'good' is what class and role you will play.
The current set up is lacking additional divine and arcane spell casters.
My solution is for you to play either:
A Human Fighter with 15 or more Strength and 17 or more in Wisdom
And then dual over to a Cleric after a few levels of Fighter - I'd recommend 3 levels so you get the extra * to put into warhammer (totallying *****), basically you'd be a pure Cleric who can actually swing a warhammer well!
or
A half/elf Fighter/Cleric
As for your stats high dexterity doesn't hurt and 16 constitution is essential, anything higher is wasted. Higher wisdom is good too - bonus spells per level and strength is good too. Something like this would be good:
Strength: 16
Dexterity: 17
Constitution: 16
Intelligence: 10
Wisdom: 18
Charisma: 10
Now I'd also be tempted to dual Imoen over to Mage at level 5, that way you can get decent enough points in locks and traps (the most essential skills) to cover yourself. I'd leave all the wilderness areas unexplored until you dual her, that way you won't need her thieving capabilities (that she won't have access too) and will gain a tonne of xp.
So your party would look something like:
PC - Fighter 3 > Cleric .... or .... Fighter/Cleric
Imoen - Thief 5 > Mage
Jaheira - Fighter/Druid
Khalid - Fighter
Minsc - Ranger
Dynaheir - Mage
A solid team methinks!

For your first playthrough, I'll recommend playing as a human fighter - STR, DEX, and CON are important stats for fighthers. INT, WIS, and CHAR are not as important for fighters as these stats mentioned above. I played (in my many playthroughs) as a sword and board (meaning sword and shield) character. Just make sure your character also has at least one point in bows and one point in swords at the beginning of the game. Bows and slings and other ranged weapons are really usefull in BG1, meaning a point in axe is also usefull since you can buy throwing axes at some point.

Your party is pretty much the standard party in BG1 - a great party, I might addImoen is a thief, so she's sort of necessary. You can't ditch Jaheira without Khalid leaving as well, though. I think Jaheira is the only cleric? in BG1; I seem to remember that maybe there is another cleric called Branwen, bound in stone in a wood somewhere in BG1.
There are actually quite a few Clerics/Druids in the game!
Jaheria - Fighter/Druid
Viconia - Cleric
Yeslick - Fighter/Cleric
Branwen - Cleric
Quayle - Cleric/Illusionist
Tiax - Cleric/Thief
Faldorn - Druid

You might want to keep charisma up for role-playing reasons, but strength, dexterity and constitution all give much greater game-playing benefits. Constitution over 16 is only wasted if your PC is not a fighter type (including ranger, paladin and barbarian). Fighters (including dual and multi-class) get full benefits. For instance if constitution starts at 18 and you use the tome to get it to 19 you will get +5 HPs per level - meaning a fighter gets almost as many HPs from the constitution bonus as their average 5.5 HPs per level from die roll.jaxsbudgie wrote...

It is useful to have intelligence of at least 9 as this is required to use wands and scrolls. Wisdom has no benefit for a fighter, but obviously does for a cleric (need a minimum of 17 to dual to a cleric). Setting intelligence at 9 and charisma at 3 with other stats 18 only requires a total die roll of 84, which you should be able to get very quickly by re-rerolling at character creation.

I'm a quest hunter and i know all the little tricks to max your exp ASAP.
Kill firebead elvenhair (mage in the candlekeep inn) for a quick 2700exp (and a nice mage robe early in the game)
Theres a ring of protection in a rock in the area south of FAA, this can be useful. (x1006 y1114)
Firebead pulls himself out of the grave, and you can do a quick quest to get 300xp and a reputation +1, then kill him again (be warned, he's stronger this time) for the 2700 exp. (x 2044 y 2905)
Head accross to feldeposts, talk to marl the drunk, rather than fight him, say 1-1-3-3-1, get 900xp for resolving it peacefully, then kill him for the usual 650xp and no reputation loss.
These are the big things i do when i start a new profile, hope this helps.

Saving Melicamp is slightly tougher, but still doable and worth 2k XP. Go to High Hedge then head to the area south of there. Then go a little to the east.
