I don't remember you having this discussion with the community regarding DLC. Would've been nice if, either now or a few years ago you said:

"Nobody has ruled out full fledged pay-to-play DLC or anything, but it
would be foolish to rush into anything without first evaluating the
overall success of the game, the features people liked, etc."

It seems DLC is a given for you and there's not even a need to discuss it.

Regardless of my stance on DLC, I appreciate your responses in this thread (well, maybe not the last one :P)

Who would honestly expect a business to discuss new revenue sources and long term viability plans with a bunch of people who are not directly part of that business, may still live at home with mom and dad and scream, yell, and troll when they dont get what they want?

It would be foolish for them to discuss this with a forum community. Now, an announcement that they were going to offer this kind of content along with this game is something else entirely. Then again, it is an obvious assumption that they would considering the track record of their previous games and what the new releases from their competition are doing.

Ok grasshopper to be blunt and obvious here I go.

1) The developers don't get the entire MSRP. It gets broke down into several places. Shipping, packaging, and oh yeah the big one THE STORE THAT SELLS IT! Each step another business gets a price increase on it.

2) With software piracy running rampant, it is completely understandable for the DLC. Since it helps to stop piracy. Not to mention cope with all the financial losses they would have had all these years.

3) To finish off instead of blaming EA(bought Bioware to my understanding), blame all the freeloaders who download the games and serials instead of paying for these guys hard work. And if that is not enough you can pm me and I can give you many more reasons why you are in the wrong.

Define complete.

The moment I heard the exact same voice-overs for WK and SP for party-members, I knew that they had recorded all this voice-work during the main production process. Sure, it's possible to recruit some of the cast for a couple extra hours in a studio, but at most they're paying 20 bucks an hour. Claudia Black isn't going to give up an afternoon for 50 bucks, and I doubt she would sign a contract that compelled her to do voice-work indefinitely.

At the point I start hearing "close imitations" of voice-overs included in DLC, then I will know it's new content and not simply cut content that they're reselling. Until then, I feel ripped off.

Ok, that is a wild assumption. You have no way of knowing what they pay her and what the costs of hiring voice talent are. Pulling numbers out of your backside you think are reasonable doesnt make it so. Having their VO talent sign a contract makes sense if they plan on continuing some of the main characters in future DLC and/or expansions.

Didn't have the time (or patience) to read through the whole 10-page thread.

The thread title however is so absurd that it really drew my eye: why on earth would anyone HAVE TO download more content? I myself have been pretty pleased with the game, and I've had no thoughts whatsoever that I should buy any of the DLC (I do have the free DLC's, however).

Care to give any sources for those assertions? All I see is a big bucket of assumptions trying to masquerade as fact.

DLC is optional. I remember a time where additional content being made to a game was unheard of.

Now we can get more official content.

it costs money to have people on hand to develop and test and deploy software.

It costs money to maintain servers.

It costs money to maintain this stupid forum.

And it is a business.

Businesses operate for profit.

Or the more likely scenario, they have a X number of years contract with the voice actors to all the upcoming DLCs and Expansions.  And why wouldn't they sign a contract to do voice overs for x number of years?

Guess starring TV actors sign those kind of contracts all the time. They'll sign a contract to be in X number of Episodes for X number of years, and they may only be in like 2 episodes per year.

I would hope that Bioware would always have the same exact voice actors for all their DLC and Expansions.

So I guess you will feel ripped off for the next 2 years, cause I have a feeling that all the DLC and the Expansions will have the same exact voice actors.

Okay. 100 bucks an hour. Is Claudia Black going to give up an afternoon for 250 bucks? How far do you want to take your line of reasoning?

And I can say with experience the money that voice acting earns you. I did IT in college for a couple years, mostly in the Engineering School, but for extra cash we'd do work for the Performing Arts college. My university operated the Bonstelle Theatre in downtown Detroit and my buddies and I often would work night shifts operating their booth. We'd also pick up work for the Radio station which operated a professional studio for the Performing Arts college. They would rent studio time to people outside of the university and also to students for bargain basement pricing. Someone had to maintain the equipment when it wasn't in use. But I have a lot of experience interacting with that environment and 20/hour is actually a pretty fair payscale for extra voicework. i saw professionals working for even less.

I'm sure Captain Janeway and Claudia Black made a better wage than the dude who voiced Alistair, but I find it hard to believe that they're breaking industry standards to share the wealth with their no-name voice-cast. My 20/hour figure was directed more at the no-names than Claudia Black.

I imagine that voice actors are still part of SAG. You can bet that Catherine Mulgrew and the dude who played the head Dalish elf(sounded like Tuvok from Voyager) are. Now, i dont know where they recorded their VO work or how a union like SAG works in Canada, if that is where it was done, but seems to me that professional quality voice work is anything but cheap.

Warden's keep was short I was for sure disappointed about that. However did I regret spending 7 dollars? Hell no, arguably that 7 dollars made the 60 dollar purchase I made all the better because I got a kick ass ability that restored mana and a chest to throw all the stuff I couldn't carry in my bags into.
Bioware has always been a great company, and they have always done great work. Dragon Age is really pretty, and reminds me of Star wars KOTOR but with better graphics and in a dark medieval setting. You don't need the stuff but it sure makes it more fun!

If your talking about the pretty graphics then your obviously talking about the PC version then.Image IPB

I have the PC version, and I still don't know what he's talking about, concerning 'pretty graphics.'

Well, then you will feel ripped for the next 2 years, cause I bet anything that we will have the same voice actors for the next 2 years worth of DLCs and Expansion packs.

I 'm sure Bioware made contracts with the voice actors to have them come back to do voice overs.

On DLCs: As long as the content is well made, I won't mind shelling out more cash. I understand the whole 'it's a business' bit. My main concern would be the quality of any future DLCs, expansions or sequels. IMHO, the only DLC I've paid for, Warden's Keep, was worth the 7 USD I paid for.

If the upcoming Return to Ostagar is of equivalent quality, then I'll be glad to pay for it.

On graphics: 'pretty' is subjective. :P I don't have a problem w/ the graphics, they're quite 'pretty' as far as what I guess they're trying to achieve/project, but definitely not 'groundbreaking'.

LOL! I think it's Tuvok, too!!! Can someone confirm that?

I didn't interact a lot with the SAG - but I would imagine that high-end celebrities are more interested in bartering their own contracts than working to a payscale. I did interact with Motown and people who had worked for Shady studios - and no, the guy who makes random noises in the background of a rap song doesn't make a lot of money. People from GM and Chrysler would use our university studio to film things like the short clips used at the Auto Show displays and the announcer guy for those wasn't rolling in dough, either.

It's just a person who's trying to get by in a career track where all the money and power is concentrated at the top. Most people that do this work aren't rich.

yea ofcourse i didnt mean HAVE to download. but like you said, they dangle it infront of you, INGAME, on the main story line. im sorry if there is a character in the game telling you about a quest and then half way thru the convo he drops the download this content option on you, thats NOT a full game in my opinion.

Well your opinion is wrong and I'm finding it very difficult not to flame you for your antics.

What do you do for a living?  Flip burgers or something?  They couldn't hire me for $20 bucks an hour, I wouldn't take the pay cut and I don't make huge money.  I just make more than that.

Personally, I think you're making assumptions about something you don't have a freaking clue about.

Most probably. Kath Soucie (Aerie in BG2) did voicework for DA.

According to this site, it is more then likely she did. Kath Soucie did voice work for both BG2 and Dragon Age.

You know, you're a real ****.  We're all working on assumptions when we having this discussion.  I clearly outlined my reasoning, experiences, and thought-process behind my assumptions in later posts - which I'm sure you didn't bother to read before spouting derision.  No one other than you - even those with differing opinions and ideas - has been as discourteous.

You wanna know what I do for a living?  I'm a political organizer.  Last year, I worked for the ****ing President of the United States.  And you know what?  I did it for a lot less than 20/hour.  In fact, if you took my salary versus 15 hour days and 7 day weeks, I probably worked for less than minimum wage.  Don't believe me - I'll be happy to friend you on Facebook so you can see my ****ing resume and photo/video portfolio.  Now, what the **** do you do that makes you so ****ing important?
