For a year we played the original release Origins, then added Awakening. Our first game was still saved and playable, with a male mage (Arradon) and Alistair 100% in love, he never treated him as a girl.

I bought the Ultimate edition, as I could get it cheaper than buying all the DLCs separately, and now can’t gay romance Alistair.

I am very very miffed, loving a girl and having flings with Zev just ....sigh
I want Alisatir :crying:

I have not dreamt this. My man is miffed too, while not as deeply upset as me (well he’s not besotted by Alistair, though he does like him) he finds it odd that the gay relationship’s been removed and sees something sinister behind it.

we know Bioware are happy with gay relationships, after all the most powerful one is the gay Anders one in DA2, so?????

Something devious happened, and I want to know what and why

I've been told I am too old for tantrums so no tantrum smiley ;)

I thought Alistair and Morrigan were always straight in the vanilla game. Assuming you're a PC gamer, because everyone seems to be, just install that "equal love" mod.

I don't know what's up with your version of DA:O, but as far as I'm aware Alistair was never available as a gay relationship without using mods (same goes for Morrigan). There were plenty of complaints by the gay community, as I recall, that Alistair was more to their tastes for an m/m romance than Zevran. Perhaps as a result, there was quite the forum campaign for DA2 to have every LI swing both ways.

So it was never removed, not by the introduction of Awakening or anything else. Possibly you just encountered a glitch, and DA:O has plenty of those even this long after release.

Personally, while I am fine with gay romances in DA, I don't like the idea of all LIs being PC-oriented. Destroys too much story and character potential.

All LIs in the game being bisexual doesn't seem very realistic to me. It's certainly not like that IRL - why would it be that way in DA, which (despite the fact that it's a fantasy game) strives for a high level of realism?

Just my two cents.

Alistair was never available for a gay romance. The game IS buggy though and there is at least one line that is supposed to go to females that ends up going to males and vice versa. However, the gender and romance dialogs are determined at the script level (and amazingly the code for those flags is coded properly) so if you were getting romance dialogs for a male character, the game may have been confused about the gender of your warden.

Edit: Thinking back on it, there also was a bug that I believe was caused by a particular mod that would cause Alistair to break up with a male warden or hostile female after the landsmeet.

Also, I believe (it's been awhile since I've looked at these scripts) that it's only the romance starter lines that have the gender check enabled -- most of the regular romance dialogs should trigger if the romance is active and at various approvals.  The romance CAN be switched on for males via console, though some of the dialogs will be out of place.

So you may have hit upon a weird glitch where the romance got switched on somehow.  But it was most definitely a bug if you weren't using mods and you didn't switch it on via console.

it was our first run through so no mods ... no I tell a lie, a few days in and spouse found the nude ones  ;)

on the PC (can't be arsed with consoles) a patched to 1.03 Origins
although it might explain why I had to go through hoops and delve into the registry to play Awakening

well I know what to do next time I want to play a male and romance
Alistair, I'll delve into the loft and dig out the original disc

surely I can't be the only one this happened to???

The original version of the game wouldn't help reproduce a glitch. However, since you're playing on PC, you can easily enable the romance. Either turn it on via console, use a mod like equal love, or I have a script file on my main mod page (ZDF Dialog Fix, link in my signature) that was written by Terra_Ex that removes the gender checks of starting the romance for both Alistair and Morrigan. There may be a couple of inappropriate dialogs, especially in banters, where a male warden is referred to as a woman if he's romancing Alistair, but I don't remember Alistair referring to the gender of his romance partner often -- it would be noticable if a male marries Alistair as he would be referred to as queen, but for the most part, the dialogs themselves would fit for a male.

It happened to me once - ironically, after I uninstalled the Equal Love mod, because none of my Wardens cared to flirt with Alistair. He was on 'friendly' when I uninstalled it. After I started the game again and talk to him, he gave my male elf mage a rose.

But it was only that once (and I can't even count how many times I reaplayed DAO). Even when I realoaded the save to see if it will happen again, the conversation went on as normal.

I'm pretty sure Alistair was romanceable. He always seemed kind of gay to me at any rate.
