Right so I've played Baldur's Gate 1 to death and totally abused the Level 1 NPCs mod by altering and changing classes of all the NPCs left right and centre for a different playthrough each time. I suppose that's the joy of BG1, a huge variety of NPCs to choose from.
I've only done the same to Baldur's Gate 2 a handful of times and I feel like starting once again ...

I'm open to any class, although having said that I've played Thieves a lot, especially Fighter/Thieves ...
I've also completed the entire saga recently (well, within the last 2 or so years) with a Skald, Ranger/Cleric and Mage/Thief. All were thoroughly enjoyable, especially the Skald!

I want to shift the classes of all the NPCs around quite a bit, but can only do so with a clear conscious - it has to feel believable to the character.
Annoyingly enough some characters talk of their histroy (i.e. class) quite a lot which is distracting when making them into other classes. And others have only the stats for the classes they already are.

I've had Nalia as a Swashbuckler/Mage, Sharpshooter/Mage and Sorcerer in previous playthroughs, all because they resemble her original Mage/Thief character. I'm not against human multiclass characters, I'm a 3rd edition idealist.

Now I've played Viconia as a Cleric/Thief, Fighter/Cleric and Cleric/Mage before. All have been brilliant. Viconia is my favourite character and I always end up bringing her along even if I hadn't planned on it.

Jaheria as well is another NPC I've modified a fair few times, Totemic Druid/Fighter, Totemic Druid, Ranger/Cleric, Avenger. She was particularly formidible as a Ranger/Cleric.

I was just wondering if people have used and abused the Level 1 NPCs mod to alter the NPCs in totally different but believable ways?

Haer'Dalis as a Fighter/Mage could be interesting, but then again people would argue that a Blade is x1000000 better than that and anything else on the planet.
Valygar could easily be a Thief (I know for a fact he has Thief voice clips) as well as a Cleric.
Viconia as a Chorister from the Song&Silence mod which is basically a Bard come Cleric, which might work ... can you imagine Viconia singing with a harp?
Nalia could make a convincing Cleric, but her 9 Wisdom makes me think twice - perhaps a Cleric/Mage? If originally made a Fighter she can dual into either Thief or Mage.
Yoshimo as the Bard kit Acrobat? I'm clutching at straws here ...

I really want to play through this game again, may even load up one of my multiple BG1 final saves but I want it to be a brand new and exciting experience (or at least something to that measure). Probably worth noting I don't like good NPCs unless it's Nalia, I really don't know why I don't not like her, my cat is even named after her! Haha.

If you're willing to change the standard classes at all, then why should there be a problem in changing stats as well?  In any case the stat limitation is applied at character creation rather than in the game, so there should be no problem in creating 'illegal' class characters (Bioware have a number of NPCs in this category).

Admittedly i'm a powerplayer, but like Grond0 i don't see any problem in changing the stats of an NPC. Why not raise Nalia's wisdom if you want to use her as a cleric? Just lower another sttribute if you don't want a character in your party with ridiculous stats. I actually like Khalid as a character, but i have no use for a fighter with 15 strength, thank you. So, i raise his strength to 18/xx and lower one of his other attributes.

Like you, i nearly always take Vicky along, but i don't want any alignment issues so i change her alignment to chaotic neutral. Problem solved.

Also, you might want to try some of the NPC mods. Most are crap, but some are really good. I especially recommend the Angelo-mod (yep, Sarevok's cronie). Weimer's Solaufein and Valen mods are also very good. If you like evil NPC's, you'd enjoy Valen. They don't come more evil than her.

I may change some of the NPCs stats around but raising Nalia'a wisdom just seems against her character, urgh. DILEMMA.

I've played the Solaufein mod, literally one of the worst mods I've ever had this displeasure of playing. It reeked of 'mod content' ... doesn't he have like a divine intervention and receives a ridiculous sword that's like +70 or something? And I've heard the Valen mod is insanely overpowered, don't her claws paralyse and level drain or something?

I mean I like powerful characters, but I also like them with their flaws. I like a challenge.
I may start as an Avenger, never played one directly, always make Faldorn one and they seem like fun. Thinking of having Viconia as a Chorister, Haer'Dalis a Swashbuckler and Nalia a Fighter>Mage.

Yup, Valen is ..somewhat..overpowered. I recommend using SCS and perhaps raising the difficulty if you have her in your party. I rarely use her, since i don't like playing evil and Valen basically forces you to be REALLY evil. Weimer was never very good at balancing things and his NPC's reflect that:P

Obviously, whether or not you like certain NPC's is rather subjective, but you'd probably like Angelo. Nothing overpowered about him and as a character he's interesting to a roleplayer like you.

Weimer's mods, unfortunately, are known to do that. They add extremely challenging encounters, but on the other hand you also get rewards - items and powers - that are easily among the most powerful in the game.
The first versions of these mods are probably close to a decade old now, they were among the first tactical and NPC mods and were mostly focused on "look what a cool item/character/ability/battle you can have now" than on feeling like a part of the regular game.

I've used Level 1 NPC to make Mazzy a Paladin and thus strike a blow for the non-human races. It also gets rid of the Keldorn/Viconia murderous conflict, while still keeping Cronsymir in play. As a lady, Mazzy just gives Vikky one stern warning instead of the fanatical foaming at the mouth that Keldorn resorts to.
And of course, Edwin is a natural as a sorcerer.

Right these are the best I could come up with taking into considering the NPCs stats and an element of RP:

Aerie - Cleric/Thief - Mage/Thief - Ranger - Chorister - Dirgesinger - Bard
Anomen - Paladin - Cleric - Justifier
Cernd - Totemic Druid - Beast Master - Avenger
Edwin - Sorcerer - Mage/Thief
Haer-Dalis - Gypsy - Skald - Fighter/Mage - Swashbuckler - Stalker - Soulknife - Hexblade - Duskblade
Imoen - Adventurer - Bard - Sharpshooter - Mage - Sorcerer - Swashbuckler
Jaheira - Feralan - Totemic Druid - Cleric/Ranger - Avenger
Jan - Cleric/Thief - Cleric/Mage - Burglar
Keldorn - Cleric - Chorister - Fist of the Order - Justifier - Monk - Cavalier - Undead Hunter
Korgan - Barbarian - Blackguard - Wizard Slayer -Blackguard
Mazzy - Paladin - Duellist - Monk - Justifier - Undead Hunter
Minsc - Barbarian - Paladin - Undead Hunter - Cavalier
Nalia - Adventurer - Sorcerer - Swashbuckler - Mage - Sharpshooter - Fighter - Cleric - Chorister
Sarevok - Thief - Assassin - Sorcerer - Mage - Blade - Blackguard
Valygar - Thief - Bounty Hunter - Ranger/Cleric - Wizard Slayer - Druid - Avenger - Shadowdancer - Inquisitor
Viconia - Sorcerer - Cleric/Mage - Cleric/Thief - Chorister - Dirgesinger - Fighter/Cleric - Monk - Hexblade - Blackguard
Yoshimo - Duellist - Swashbuckler - Burglar - Shadowdancer - Acrobat - Sharpshooter - Kensai - Blade - Skald

Right, now to just choose ...

Careful. Level1NPCs is known to produce a really problematic bug if you change Aerie's class. She just walks out on you, turningcertain cutszenes with her into unescapable traps (well, you can close BG2 from the task manager, but that's about it).

There are ways around it, but if you change her class, you'd better save the game before entering the circus tent.

Oh really? Well I never take her along anyway. Although I always have issues changing Haer'Dalis' class in Level 1 NPCs it always just says failed. Annoying, especially since he can become a billion other classes.

Haer'Dalis is a Tiefling and players can't be Tieflings, so perhaps that is a reason the changing class fails (e.g., it can't find any valid race/class combos).

I changed her to a very useful single-class Sorceror, and never had any problems with her.

It all depends what is hard coded and what is not. If 2DA files can be altered, in a way that the game will accept, you may be in luck.
