Yep. I've never seemed to care about him in ME1, even with how dramatic his side mission's story was. He really needed that upgrade in bad assery he got in both character design and personality. The humor was also a very nice touch to break all straight business agent he seemed to be in ME1.JeffZero wrote...

The name-carving and armor-clinging made sense to me, since Garrus admits one of the reasons he was so determined to go after Dr. Saleon was because he'd gotten away from him before. There were few kinda out of character things going on in Mass2. He just and just might brag about his reach, but carving names on his visor? Or clinging to that damaged armor? Also, as I said before, I predict him getting beaten up by the writers for sympathy points becoming a pattern. Which I guess would be okay if there were more to his character than just facing bad luck, because that's what he was all too much in Mass2: a beating sack. Seriously hope they go more for the "being in Shepard's shadow" -arc in Mass3.
