Making the sky match the water

Coastline areas can be difficult because the color between the sky and the fog and the sea can clash and make a very obvious area border.  By changing the color of the sky zenith, I was able to make a smoother transition from sky to water that helps mask the area border and makes it blend with the fog.

I have done similar. I think these are the sort of details that allow you to set the mood of an area properly.

A cloudy sky and matt grey water for an overcast scene look all the better for changing the zenith to meet the grey of the lighting or water or land surface (I think it is much the same with flat landscapes as well).

Also the sun moon colour needs to be thought about when setting an area mood. As in the sample below (WIP) where I am trying to depict a salt marsh such as we have one or two of in the south of the UK.
