Well, he may never be physically aggressive towards Hawke. But I know I'd definitely have to prepare myself for it if I wanted to gain his trust. Listening to his words, knowing he could snap at any moment and lash out (he does, once or twice). If I were in a relationship with him, I would be hardening myself by imagining it and preparing for it happening. That dulls the pain I feel from his harsh words and, if he ever should become physically aggressive because he's having a bad day, I'm already well prepared for it.
Whom would I side with at the end if I were a mage? Umm ... as much as I'm all for my brothers-and-sisters-in-magic, I would have to say that I would probably side with the templars. Not because of Fenris. Well, not because of him directly. But, he would have told me numerous stories of how Tevinter magisters became obsessed with power and now regularly consult with demons and invoke blood magic at the drop of a hat. Even if my mage had never met Fenris, I still wouldn't support a society where "might makes right" and absolutely power corrupts everyone absolutely. As a mage, I would know all about the Tevinter Imperium, and how magic created a living hell there. I would never let Kirkwall fall like that. (But that's just me. That says more about me than anybody else.)
As an aside, I have several friends IRL who ... umm ... they don't act like Fenris. But they have their bad days. I've learned to deal with their bad days by imagining it happening beforehand and then rationally considering the options I have. That way, when the inevitable happens, I am prepared to respond rationally with a strategy that helps both of us.
