Am I missing something or is there a more effiencent way to heal than resting in an inn or camp for 48 (game)hours. Heal spells suck (at least the low level ones do) and of course spell usage is limited.
Also, do I have to complete sidequest within the chapter that they are given. I'm only at the very beginning (Nashkel before the mine) and noticed the journey empties itself after you go from chapter 1 to 2. Or did I overlook a turn page feature in the journal?

You can turn on the game option to rest until healed if you want to. If you don't like the idea of using up so much game-time you could pay for healing at a temple (or buy lots of healing potions there, though there is a limit to the number of these available). The Twilight God wrote...

There is indeed a button in the journal to flip between chapters. There is no requirement to complete quests in any particular order, although there are certain main-line quests which have to be performed to progress the game.

There is no faster way, sadly. Resting and burning all your heal spells, then resting again if need be is the only option. Baldur's Gate II makes this less tedious with its rest until healed option, or by wearing an item with regeneration. Kagain almost always fully heals thanks to his sky high constitution that grants him regeneration. To my knowledge there are no such items in Baldur's Gate.

There is Draw Upon Holy Might (which will dispel at the end of your rest if you cast it before going to sleep)

I never considered that. Something to try with Charname and any clerics. Not everyone can cast draw upon holy might, though. That leaves several party members in the cold.
