Mass Effect version (physical disc): 1.0 (though the issue occurred with the patch as well)

Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz
Clock speed: 3390 MHz
Ram: 7.98 GB
Video card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 SE (1.00 GB)
Sound: Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio)

OS:Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 
DirectX: DirectX 10.0  (Mar2009) or later

The problem: When I try to play the game from the launcher (i.e. click "Play"), I get the message, "Failed to authenticate disc. Please insert the correct disc and try again." 

This happens despite which disc I use and whether or not the game is patched. 

I get the feeling that I need to return to the store I bought it from. Is it possible that I have the incorrect CD key for the game? Would it have allowed me to install it if the CD key was incorrect?

I just realised that this question has been asked many times before. I will look through those posts for an answer.

I'll answer anyway.

Launch the game directly from the executable.

OR

Register the game to the Origin software and download the digital copy at no additional cost.

You wouldnty have been able to install it if the cd key were wrong.
Do you have 2 dvd drives? If so, is the disk in the same drive you installed from. Also, take out any disk that may be in the second drive, especially if its another Bioware/EA game.
Can you read the disk in Windows explorer?
Do you have Nero SmartStart loaded into system memory? If so, remove it.

Thanks for the replies.

I assume you are referring to the MassEffect2.exe in the binaries folder? That shows the same error.

I can't download the digital copy, I have an extreme download limitation currently.(It costs me $50 for 3GBs).

I only have a single DVD drive. I can read the disk in windows explorer. And I don't have Nero smart start.

If need be, I can wait until January when I will have access to a proper internet connection once again. Then try downloading a copy and see if that works.

Youve registered on the forums, so you have a legit copy. That being the case, there shouldnt be any problems with you going to  gamecopyworld.com and downloading the no-disk version of the exe file. 
Make sure you also have the 1.02 patch installed.
