First all my companions have disappeared permanently from the game.
Now, when loading any saved game, my character is dead and all I get to see is <You have been defeated>
I have reinstalled and replayed the game and at first everything worked again,
now in the later course of the game it happened again.
Is anyone experiencing similar problems? Can anyone help?

Sounds like you are overriding something, back up your override folder and create a new, empty one.

The override folder is empty.
Yet an override seems to happen in the globals.xml files in all saves
(not sure if anywhere else apart from there) but I could not find out how or why this happens?

Are you letting the spirit eater status drop to 0?

It did drop down to 0 before I last died... but does that have an impact on all previous saved games?

There is a type of variable called "campaign variables" that are stored externally to the saved game and would have an effect on any saved games. It is possible they used a campaign variable to store something about the status, but it is surprising since a global or local variable would make more sense.
If you load a saved game from before your main PC became the spirit eater does (before the battle with Okku) do things work correctly?

In fact it does work correctly if I load a saved game from before my PC became the spirit eater...
Do you know of any way how to find out which is the variable in question and then "adjust" it accordingly?

According to the kinc_spirit_eater script the spirit eater points are stored in the global float variable "00_fSEPoints". When you save a game the global variables are stored in the globals.xml file in the saved game folder in the Saves folder. You can edit the globals.xml file with Notepad. Open it up and find "00_fSEPoints", in my file it is near the bottom in a section that looks like this:
<Floats>
<Float>
<Name>00_fCorruption</Name>
<Value>0.500000</Value>
</Float>
<Float>
<Name>00_fSEPoints</Name>
<Value>98.000000</Value>
</Float>
<Float>
<Name>_OGParty_Jump_GroupSpc</Name>
<Value>1.500000</Value>
</Float>
<Float>
<Name>_OGthePartySpc</Name>
<Value>1.800000</Value>
</Float>
</Floats>
The Value line just after the Name line with "00_fSEPoints" in it is the current setting. As you can see mine is currently set to 98.000000. Set yours to 98.000000 and save the file. Then try loading that saved game and see if it makes a difference.
I'm not sure this will work though since (1) I have never done it, and (2) each saved game has its own globals.xml file, so the setting in one saved game wouldn't affect other older saved games. But clearly something strange is going on related to the spirit eater status, so it is worth a shot.
If this works then you may want to also consider downloading my spirit eater recharger item from the Vault and using that to keep the spirit eater points from dropping to zero again. More info on controlling/managing/eliminating the spirit eater in this thread.

The SE points variable was actually missing in some of the globals.xml-files in my saves.
I set the variable to 98 as you said and it worked - my PC was not dead anymore when I loaded the game
and I can finally play again - thank you soo much, simply amazing!!!!!
And btw your spirit eater recharger is great, and I'll also have a look at your other items from now on

Glad that worked for you. If you also have SoZ and like the idea of creating your own party members in MotB you might try the MotB Makeover. It has a number of features that people asked for, allows visiting some old friends and OC areas (Amie, Casavir, Shandra, Neeshka), makes AJ more useful, and fixes some bugs.
