I have the text for to hit rolls turned on and I just saw this:

Jaheira- Attack Roll 12 + 0 = 12: Hit
Gilthas- Attack Roll 12 + 0 = 12: Miss

Am I not reading this right? Why wouldn't they both be hits (or misses)? To be honest, I'm not entirely sure what the "+ 0" part means. I mostly have it turned on so I have a better idea as to what I need to roll to hit an enemy, though I'm starting to think I've been reading it wrong this whole time.

Edit: Also, my protagonist (Gilthas) managed to break two weapons in a single chapter in BG1, and nobody else has broken any, so maybe IE just hates the main character?

Double edit: And I just noticed that my THAC0 is 18, though I have two levels of ranger, Specialization in Blunt Weapons, A Strength of 16, and I'm wielding a club (because they don't break). Shouldn;t my THAC0 be 16 or 17?

You have to take into account the character's Thac0 with the weapon they are using, otherwise the rolls you see would be useless. Specialization gets you +1 to hit. So if at level 1 your Thac0 was 20, you went to level 2 and it was 19, but since you are using clubs which you are specialized in that would be 18. So that sounds about right.

Adjustments relating to the characters own abilities are made to the base Thaco0, i.e. your specialization adjusts the Thaco you see on your character record. Adjustments due to the situation you're in (such as attacking from stealth or attacking in melee someone using a missile weapon) or equipment used are shown as changing your base roll, i.e. if you were using a magic +1 club your example above would be 12 + 1.

Corey, But my strength is 16, which is +1 to hit, so it should have been 17.

Grond0, I think I get it now. It's been a while since I dealt with 2e THAC0 rolls, so I was probably interpreting the results wrong. In the above situation, Jah's THAC0 was 16 and the PCs was 18. The target could have possibly had an AC of 5, which would have been a hit for Jah and not for the PC.

In BG strength 16 is just +1 damage and no bonus to hit. It's a very long time since I played PnP so I'm afraid I can't remember if that's different.

Right again. I found some tables online. I thought Str 15 just gets +1 damage and 16 was +1 to hit and +2 damage.
