Their main mistake is aiming to picking the wrong target crowd. I doubt that there are many fans of the anime style and Mass Effect.Macgarnickle wrote...
I'm actually somewhat curious how this statue will do. Normally when I read the doom and gloom on the forums about how ME2 or DA2 betrayed the franchises and people are outraged the products still sell and the complainers eventually move on to something else.
But this time around even a fair chunk of the people defending it seem to be kind of meh about it. Most of the defenders instead of praising the statue are basically saying don't buy it if you don't like it. Which is true but hardly a ringing endorsement.
Personally I wouldn't go so far as to call the statue a mistake but I do wish it had done a few things differently, basically the same complaints as everybody else about the babyface and squeezing her enormous boobs together. It's a shame because I actually thought the concept art for the statue looked interesting.

There are more than you'd think, the problem being that they will favour one side more. I have the dominant Otaku side and it says "i could spend my money on actual anime stuff". If they have a dominant Mass Effect side it will most likely be "doesn't look enough like Liara".
Even if its remade with concept art by Shunya Yama****a or Tsukasa Jun (two of my favorite artists) and a faithful sculpt of said art my response would still be "i could spend my money on actual anime stuff"
Edit: I can't even use a guy's name? Bloody hell that sucks.

What is it you people don't get? If you don't like it, don't buy it. Simple as that.
The problem is that people are seeing a trusted friend (and possibly lover) trivialized and sexualized by an exploitative anime sculptor. It's bad enough that Liara felt the need to wear push-up space armor in LotSB, but now she may feel pressured to get eezo breast implants to keep pace with the unrealistic body image being foisted upon her by predatory entertainment media.
Aside from the emotional trauma this will cause the Bioware fanbase, there's also the matter of retconning our internal role-playing stories. There could be thousands of pages of fanfic that will need adjustment to accommodate Liara's body image (and bigger boobs, in some of the more...exotic...writing).
The scope of this outrage is much wider than a simple decision not to by some sort of manga/anime statue.
SHE'S NOT REAL! She's a video game character. She won't reciprocate your feelings. she has none of her own! :crying:It's not going to cause emitional trauma, if it does there is something the seriously wrong. It's a 1/6 scale PVC statue that will retail for about 7000 yen. It's aimed at a certain kind of person, mainly one that collects either that line of statues, or people who really games in general and thinks this is fun. I can't wait for this to be released so it can gather dust with the rest of my usless pieces of PVC. No one is forcing your to buy it, no one is forcing you to do strange and creepy things with it. Don't like it don't buy it. Can't stand it don't look at pictures of it or post in topics about it.

To be fair that's an incredibly weak argument. Just because something is supposed to look a certain way doesn't mean people have to like it. I don't rip a fart then tell people who complain that it's supposed to smell.
Although I do agree that a lot people are overreacted to this.

I am one such person, so here's my stance: If I am enough of a Mass Effect fan as to buy merchandise (which is true), then I am obviously enough of a fan to care about the universe and characters (which is also true). The result: I want merchandise that reflects what I love about said universe/characters, and this statue hits none of those buttons.
I know I'm only one person so my opinion has to be taken with a grain of salt, but even as the "target audience" I'm still a bit unimpressed by this.

This style is infantile ("put hueg boobs on it and make her stand in a pose exposing her ass "), creepy - to the point of suspecting the artist of hidden pedophilia, and just bad.
It is not my trend of anime, for sure.
Anyway, I wouldn't like to know anyone, who would buy it.
EDIT: some of you said, that they would accept this figurine, if it wasn't labeled "Liara". I couldn't do that - as much as I love ME universe, I think that limiting a character to her (his?) boobs and ass is insulting to the whole franchise, and simply offensive. Even if it wasn't labeled "Liara T'soni".
I simply can't think of possible target group at the moment, without simple stereotypes coming to my mind.

He's not saying they do. E.g. I don't like the statue, but I recognise that it's obviously meant to look that way. Some people on here are saying that Liara shouldn't look like that; it's as silly as arguing that Star Wars lego is daft because the characters are not as blocky as that in the movies :/ Now, someone saying they don't like Star Wars lego because it's just not their thing? That's totally different and completely understandable.

But I'm not surpised, as a lot of Anime tends to have a hentai & pedo vibe. It just another reason to mock the genre in general.
That being said there is another thread already discussing how horrid this statue is. The horse we are beating is dead.

The implication was that people were wrong to complain about it being anime style hence the calling of the wambulence. I don't see anything wrong with people having an opinion of the statue as long as they're not rude or overly dramatic about it. Which I know is asking a lot from the internet.

Considering that Liara is supposed to be a child, in Asari years, it wouldn't matter either way since technically Shepard (as an adult) can do Liara (supposed child with an adult body, ignoring the fact that she is much, much older)... so yeah. Bah. I would buy this, if it wasn't for the fact it is supposed to be Liara. Then again, Art does change things up when different artists do the same/recreate a painting... But I do not have the money so it really doesn't matter.

Unless the complaining is because they want a Liara statue for themselves, and think there won't ever be one made that is true to her look in Mass Effect.

But hey it's not a part of the game and I don't think it's going to ship with it the Collectors Edition or anything like that... so why cry over the fire that's burning your annoying neighbor's house? Not my house, don't care. As long as the Firemen don't let the fire spread not too much of an issue unless you're trying to sell your house. Hmm not sure where I was going with this, but the point is why even complain?

That's just it; they ARE being overly dramatic about it. If you don't like Anime, then obviously you would think twice about buying an Anime style statue. That's just common sense, is it not? But, like it or not, that is how this statue has been designed. Unfortunately, as with all things, Bioware cannot appeal to everyone's taste. On this occasion, they are trying to satisfy another corner of their market; for once the Anime fans are getting something they like instead. It's really not worth having a hissy fit over.

Eh, I would reword that to:
"Fans of mass effect and anime mixed together"
Even then, I would'nt entirely agree with that. There are some amazing sheps made by artists from japan. Although its something entirely different why you try to translate it to a 3D statue.

Liara IS NOT a child by Asari standards.
She's a young adult. Liara tells Shepard she's barely an adult by Asari standards, not that she isn't one. She's the equivalent of a human in her early 20s.
How many children do you know that are college educated scientists?
