I wouldn't have any problem with this statue, if it was from a franchise that I don't care about. But I do play ME games, and I'm quite irritated when it gets reduced to "If you put a baby face and huge boobs on that alien, you've got yourself a fine piece of ass, someone will ****** to it", just to earn a few bucks more.

I know I'm exagerating right now, but if one day an Asari sex doll with BioWare logo on her buttocks showed up, would you all be like "if you don't like the idea, don't buy it"? Because for me there are some similarities to this situation. The style of this figurine, despite the skill needed to create it, has none aesthetic value, it just plays on the simplest of facts - that young, curved females are attractive. It exists - and that is enough for me to rage a little, and objectifying females is sth that makes me rage a big time every time.

Did I like the cartoon cutesy version of Link in Windwaker? Not one bit. But I bet there were plenty of people who preferred that style to that of the SNES version. People should stop begrudging other people who do enjoy it their chance to have it, frankly. You've had plenty.

For me there's good type of anime and bad type of anime.
This style is infantile ("put hueg boobs on it and make her stand in a pose exposing her ass "), creepy - to the point of suspecting the artist of hidden pedophilia, and just bad.
It is not my trend of anime, for sure.

Anyway, I wouldn't like to know anyone, who would buy it.

Considering that Liara is supposed to be a child, in Asari years, it wouldn't matter either way since technically Shepard (as an adult) can do Liara (supposed child with an adult body, ignoring the fact that she is much, much older)... so yeah. Bah. I would buy this, if it wasn't for the fact it is supposed to be Liara. Then again, Art does change things up when different artists do the same/recreate a painting... But I do not have the money so it really doesn't matter.

Liara IS NOT a child by Asari standards.

She's a young adult. Liara tells Shepard she's barely an adult by Asari standards, not that she isn't one. She's the equivalent of a human in her early 20s.

How many children do you know that are college educated scientists?

None. I am not sure about Salarians given their short life spans despite their intelligence.

While I hate the statue, I hate even more the people on Facebook who are writing "I'd tap that".

I mean seriously, what the hell?

It is actually pretty difficult to translate 2d to 3d with anime. The ones that get it right are amazing though.

For example, the Love Is War statue of Hatsune Miku based on the song of the same name.

Edit: well for some reasons I can't get the images to show. /shrug

I'm not sure if anything is said in game or in the codex on how long it takes Salarians to reach adulthood, but considering their short lifespans, I would think they mature at a much faster rate than humans. They'd probably reach adulthood while a human of the same age would still be considered a child or a juvenile.

I'm not a fan of the statue either, but they are not reducing Liara to an anime character i.e. she isn't going to look like this in the third game.  This is a statue, a piece of merchandise, that exists outside the game.  I can't imagine how people on here would react to a line of Mass Effect lego... "oh gods why shep have mug for head?!".  Not every piece of merchandise, comic, etc., for a universe like this is going to have the same look.

As mentioned earlier, it might have been better of they did a nendroid statue. It would have been easier, and perhaps less hate.

In any case, for future reference. This is what the statue was supposed to look like, and I think they missed the mark.

That's just it; they ARE being overly dramatic about it. If you don't like Anime, then obviously you would think twice about buying an Anime style statue. That's just common sense, is it not? But, like it or not, that is how this statue has been designed. Unfortunately, as with all things, Bioware cannot appeal to everyone's taste. On this occasion, they are trying to satisfy another corner of their market; for once the Anime fans are getting something they like instead. It's really not worth having a hissy fit over.

I'm not going to deny that a number of the complainers are being over dramatic but at the same time a number of the people defending it are doing just the same.

The it's anime style argument is a weak argument for a couple reasons.  One I can still think it looks bad even if that's how it's supposed to look.  Second and more important all anime style doesn't have to look the same they don't all have enormous boobs.  I actually like some anime, I am one of the target people for this I saw the concept art and was intererested.  But I don't like the statue I still think it went overboard with the boobs and having her squeezing them together makes her look like teen making practice cleavage in the mirror.

I understand the argument just don't buy it but at the same time I don't see anything wrong with respectfully letting Bioware know why I didn't like the product.  I'm not upset, this didn't ruin my day or my life I'm just letting people know my opinion.  And also if you don't want to see people's compliants don't click on a compliant thread.:P

I think the concept art looks better than the statue as well. Some features are still exaggerated of course but not to the same degree that it was taken to in the figurine. Both the artist responsible for the concept and the artist that created the figurine (assuming they are different people) seemed to have struggled with recreating Liara's face, but the concept artist at least made his look like an adult. It may be the wrong adult, but it is an adult nonetheless.

The figurine looks like some mad scientist patched the head of a 12 year old onto the body of some stripper with terrible implants.

That being said even if the figurine looked exactly like the character in game, I'm not in the target demographic. Anime isn't my thing (Grave of the Fireflies aside) and I don't collect toys.

Thats how it works in the style. Creatures and aliens actually don't deviate that much from the west. The only way to "animeize" such creatures is to make them silly, or chibi them.

In japan, most aliens are either...

1. Human with funny hair colors. Bonus points if you add elf ears.

2. Some sort of animal or insect. A human sized praying mantis for example.

For reference... I realize the pic ins't a praying mantis, just pulled the first anime that came to mind.
http://homecinema.th...y3.JPG_25082011

If the alien in question is some sort of insect, they are either REALLY silly and exaggerated, or just look like a giant, usually talking, praying mantis.

If its an animal, like say... A dog. Their eyes will have the usually anime eyes, (usually bigger than usual) and the rest will looks less silly.

If wrex and Garrus were to be swapped over to anime style... They would look largely the same save for less "rough" texturing. Compare the comic book style of turians to the style above.

I am not a big fan of anime/manga personally. As such, I won't be buying this statue. I suggest other people who don't like it also not buy it. This also works for foods you don't like to eat or clothes you don't like to wear. This may sound like madness, but you are not forced to buy things you don't like.

For those who do like the anime/manga style, I think thsi is a very cool statue. As I said, it isn't for me, but I know there will be people out there who'll snap this up when it is available. I like that the ME team is thinking "outside the box" and looking at merchandise that is different. Hopefully there'll be other statues, toys, trinkets, etc that come out which fans are not expecting. :)

The problem Chris, this is unfair for the Liara fans that were waiting for the first merchandising ever they could buy of her. To say "dont buy it", just dont make the problem go away.

Who is assuring us that there will be a proper statue made of her in the future, or any merchandising at all? After this statue BW can just say that there's something of Liara already so now we will concentrate on any of the other 12+ characters there, and we're left with a crappy statue that dont represent Liara's character at all, independent of the anime style

This is comming from someone who likes Kotobukiya Bishoujo statues, and anime style. But this one is really poorly made in comparation of other works from the company, the sculptor took himself too many liberties in comparation of the Concept Art, from the posture, to the breasts size and also the face, turning it into a rubbish product.
That Bioware dont guide them better on portraying the character i cant understand... she even has real eyebrows in this, i wonder how much in contact to this company Bioware really had, seems they showed them a screenshot and that was it.

its superficial to believe people will completely respect one anther.i pretty much agree Duck.i love art in almost any style but i do feel this style of anime is more or so for the 15 year kids playing ME when the games are Rated M(16-18 depending where you live).if her chest wasnt so huge i would possibile like it.thats right people this man donst like fake boobs or huge boobs(less there natural, then whateve).its important for BW to branch out and get some other outlets to "interact" for the fans.which i respect, but no matter what its going to be the community will always be 50/50

They can't win. There is no way that Bioware can suit the taste of every single person. At some point or other, someone is going to lose out. In this case, that's those who don't like the anime style of this statue.
