Well when you create a character, the most logical person to model it on is yourself, as you are one of the few people who you see in the mirror every day of your life.

Dont forget that sometimes we make our characters look like we would want to look... or if designing one of the LI gender we tend to design them to look like our definition of beautiful... or as close to it as possible

Very true, though you will almost always put something if yourself into your character.

My main Shepard has blonde hair and blue eyes, like me, but apart from fair skin that's about the limit of the resemblance.  My female Shepards tend to look like a cousin of mine with dark hair and very pale skin... that's just a fondness for the goth look on females though.

This is me on both counts....I can't see any resemblance between my Shep and me....this is due to a few reasons.... Opposite sex... Eye candy for me... He is of another race than my own (one I find generally attractive) and is loosely based on two people I know from that race....He was also designed to exhibit an Alpha feel about him.

I tried to make my canon look like me but he is the ony that looks like me(sort of). Most of my male shepards run the gammit look wise though I prefer that crew cut military look for most of them (my canon doesn't have that). My female Shepards are mostly brunettes because well I am attracted to brunettes.
