We have yet to see a normal Batarian citizen since all batarian's (save 3-4 individuals) are mercs, priates or slaveres I hope we see some normal batarians in ME3 they could give more insight into their species

Um, you understand the batarians purpose is to be hated, right?

Just as the asari were intended to be fanservice, the batarians were intended to be hated.

Vorcha are the real hate intentions. Batarians are more misunderstood.

I hate the Asari and the Batarians, for different reasons.

The majority of Batarians outside of their homeworlds are a nuisance.

Interesting thread, OP.

DISCLAIMER:  This is just my objective (okay, not so object opinion) and I'm not accusing anyone of anything.  This is all said in general and it totes my thoughts and rantings.  I apologize in advance.

The Batarians trouble me greatly and by that, I mean that I don't really care for how they're depicted in  the Mass Effect  Universe.  Initial impressions are difficult to overcome and really, the first in person introduction of the Batarians comes by the way of dear, old Balak.  It would stand to reason that the player would be able to reconcile the difference between a few bad apples, and the majority of the race, but this is not so and I maintain that it would be incredibly difficult to overcome player prejudice after such an introduction (in particular in the West where inexusable prejudice  by way of rampant Islamophobia hinders some people's ability to differentiate).  Also, the continued depiction of the Batarians, as well, evil, unrepentent Bond villains doesn't help matters either.  A couple of more bulleted points.
  • A colonist Shepard could have their entire family murdered by Batarians.  Some people strongly identify with their Shepards and roleplay their Shepard as themselves.  This could aid in compounding dislike.
  • The Batarians are slavers and in our modern society (and right fully so), slavery is considered gross.  Of course, human trafficking and the like still exist in our modern world today, but it's not comparable to a whole government not only sanctioning it but maintaining that it's part of their culture and arguing the almost divine rightness of it.
  • Western sensibilites about freedom and the nature of freedom.  See any mage versus templar argument in the Dragon Age II forums for a first hand understanding of this.
  • Realistic Group Conflict Theory .  The nature of in-group/out-group dynamics can account for most things.  In particular, Sheiff's Robber Cave's Experiment shows just how bad things can get when individuals are squared off against each other.
  • No humanizing agent to give "us" the other side.  The Batarian play a decent role in the human narrative as do the Turians.  The play is given Garrus to interact with and this humanizes the turians a bit.  No signifcant Batarian interaction is given.
All that being stated, I can totally see where the Batarian hate comes from.  I don't think it's unrealistic at all.  On the contrary, it's emblematic of the human condition. Considering the fact that people still hold stereotypes despite the fact that humans are biologically all the same (race and gender are both reified concepts), people still see skin color and try to maintain garbage like this as scientifc fact.  The socially constructed world is immensely powerful and allows for the continued justification of racism, sexism, and homophobia and it stands to reason that the Mass Effect universe would be no different.

As someone who did not enjoy the ending of Arrival in the least bit (truthfully I felt a bit sick and sort of depressed after I played it), I really do hope that we at least see some awesome Batarians to counter the negative examples.

And that's my soapbox for the day.  Sorry for going on and on.  Once I get started it gets sort of difficult to stop.  Okay.  Stopping now.  For real.

ETA: About the hegemony.  One could argue that with the government cutting themselves off like that, the only form other Batarian receive comes by the way of the government.  What sort of robust information do you think the citizens of the hegemony would receive in a government controlled information center?  Yeah, not much.  I can only point to the US's corporate controlled media for an example.<_<

That's another thing I don't understand, though. They're fictional. Why do people exemplify such fervent hate toward them?

I completely agree with your first post, but not this. People are allowed to feel emotional towards fictional stories. Not to the extent that it should influence a decision you make in real life, but if you never feel any emotion when reading a good book, watching a good movie or playing a game with a good story, I feel sorry for you. Art really is a much more interesting when you can immerse yourself in it.

I would change the word terrorists to "people of middle eastern descent", and then begin to wonder if the second part is actually justified. It's a pity we cant really get into this because it is against the forum rules, but it is a very serious subject that I feel we should be allowed to debate within limits. I'm guessing it is against forum rules because people are not trusted to stick to those limits.

You misinterpret me. I am moved by many things. Brooks's death in The Shawshank Redemption made me cry forever, and I find cheesy romantic comedies to be heartwarming though all of their plots are the same. Film and literature especially captivate me; I like and am affected a lot by both fiction and nonfiction. The death of a certain character in the first Ice and Fire book really broke my heart.

Photography also really speaks to me, and I have a 35mm SLR from like 1968. Just the thought of that old camera, even from an era I wasn't born in, really calms me.

I concede that someone can dislike batarians as a fictional race. But "hate" is a word we throw around far too often, like other words previously mentioned in this thread. I don't know why someone would genuinely LOATHE something of fiction.

It's just like any other emotion. I don't hate the Batarians but thats because I just don't hate them. There are despicable characters in books and stories which I would say I hate. These are usually greedy, weak, hypocritical etc, more or less despicable in most regards. And just because I hate a character does not mean I think it is badly written, in fact it would usually be quite the contrary.

You mention the Shawshank Redemption (great emotional movie) and I hated the prison administrator although apparently not enough to know/remember his name. He deserved everything he got IMO.

Well, okay. I take back what I said about batarians being "fictional" as a reason not to hate them.

It's a pattern that happens in history when a group of people are at war, cold war, or a major disagreement with another group of people, they will tend to be suspicous and not trust anybody from the other group. One example of this is when we went to war with Germany in world war 2 many people with german heritage were not trusted at all and mistreated during and after the war for long time. Even though a lot of these Germans had lived in America way before even world war 1, people didn't care all they cared about was finding a enemy. In Mass Effect we have seen the worst of the Batarians, so people just tend to hate them and not think about the fact that they're probably Batarians who don't support what the rest of their race does.
