Oh, no. I understand now. I don't agree with the supposed logic behind the hatred, nor do I think it's properly justified for anyone outside of the ME-verse, but I understand it.Arkitekt wrote...

You know what's funny, it was never said that it was Batarian slavers that killed colonist shepard's family.
Timeline in the codex says
2170 - Batarian slavers attack the Alliance colony of Mindoir
woops, my bad, I had looked at ME wiki and looked up backgrounds on shepard, it hadn't said anything other then slavers, once again my bad.

Hopefully that log entry won't come up at Shepards trial.

Actually the Wiki does say that Colonist Shepard's family was killed by Batarian slavers..... http://masseffect.wi.../wiki/Batarians
Then there was Talitha on the space dock if you were the Colonist Shepard in ME1. She mentions Batarians in her conversation.
Just saw your above post, Jaric, and it's like when it rains it pours, eh?
Charn on BDtS.... said something about "all this was supposed to be was a grab a bunch of slaves and go operation." Of course that got under Shepard's skin, having to grow up without parents due to Batarian slavers, and so Charn had to be killed.
And Balak being a ruthless murderer got what was coming to him.
We've only seen the worst the Batarians have to offer. And I'd assume they've only seen the worst Humanity has to offer, but in the war against the Reapers, it becomes the enemy of my enemy is my friend.... for now. After we defeat the enemy then we can go back to killing each other, although I suspect it will be another cold war and trying to isolate each other.
A Batarian squadmate would be a cool addition, especially a merc who detests slavery. Make him an add on like Zevran, an assassin (infiltrator).

For the same reason people project their hatred to real individuals that are different from themselves.
Stereotypes are the single most driven reason behind many peoples racism. Even in a fictional universe, it's very easy for bigots to jump on the ignorance bandwagon and freely express their hatred. Especially, considering there's no consequences for that hate.
For example, It's very easy for a bunch of rednecks to spout their racist jib when not in direct contact with the group(s) they're slandering, but put them right in the middle of one of those groups and you can goddamn believe they'll keep their mouth shut.

I don't know if someone mentioned it, but the Turians dislike the Batarians, too. And I don't think the Salarians like them much more, especially after the Batarian attacks on their colonies.
No one particularly likes the Batarians, humanity just hates them more.
The Batarians are North Korea in space.

And, well, better to hate batarians than actual, real-life groups of people?
If they're fictional, then why do you feel like you need to make a thread defending these unimportant aliens?
You're basically saying "I can see why you hate some, but please don't hate all of them!". You seem to be treating as a real group, quite fervantly.
This post is so contradictory and pointless it hurts.

Except this is a load of crap. Literally every batarian you meet in the game is a jerk to some degree. "Stereotypes exist for a reason" as they say, and at least in this case it's tue, because Bioware have intentionally played their hand this way.Xarathox wrote...

What's wrong with Marsh, the batarian merchant? The fact that he's slightly reluctant to offer a discount (but does so anyway)? Salkie wasn't particularly a jerk either (not exactly an upstanding citizen, sure, but he wasn't a ******).

Yes, and that is why I like Hanar and the Elcor the most. It's not like the Batarians were first design disappointment, I was just very eager to see them, and when I played BDTS I was like "Humans with sharp teeth, four eyes and no nose, great. <_<"
However, you meet one likeable Asari or two, and the Batarians are just more intelligent Vorcha to me.
Batarian squadmate would be necessary to sympathize with the race at least a little bit

The early concept looked more awesome IMO: images.wikia.com/masseffect/images/7/74/Batarianbeta.jpg
It was probably very awkward though to fit that onto an in-game model.
