That's a silly presumption on its face. If that were Bioware's intent, then why do they have plenty of humans partaking in all sorts of nefarious affairs?

To remind us that, yeah, we can be awful, too.  I think it's supposed to invoke a little self-reflection: we hate on batarians as a whole when one (or a group of them) commits a crime, but when one human commits a crime, we blame that human as an individual?

There's a similar tension with Cerberus; Kelly, Ken, Gabby, Jacob, and the rest of them are all decent people, and these so-called "terrorists" are the ones stepping up to save innocent people.  Is Cerberus, then, good?  What about everything else they've done?  What about the Illusive Man?

See, that's one of the reasons I like Mass Effect: there's real-life issues in there buried under all that scifi Hollywood flashbang, and there isn't a clear solution to every problem.

*SUDDENLY GETS THREAD IDEA* Ooh, brb, gotta type a wall of text.

Edit: I agree with the very last statements of the post. It's definitely a set up for something to come.

Definitely.  Makes me wonder what.

Why doesn't anyone see that it is way more likely that BioWare is showing us the bad side of the Batarians because Shepard is Human, most Batarians despise Humans (through personal experience or lies), and we must try to recruit their aid against the Reapers. Which adds more difficulty to recruiting allies in ME3. Kind of like the Geth vs Quarians in ME3.

The people who hate the Batarians (outside of RP-ing their Canon Shepard, if anyone does that here) are most likely short-sighted and clearly cannot see beyond "herp derp, me run into handful of bad batarians so they all are evulz". Most of them likely killed the scared Batarians about to kill Daniel despite not knowing or believing that the vial he had was the CURE and not more of the virus (due to anti-Human propaganda) and left the sick Batarian to die simply because "Batawiunz are EVULZ!!!"

In short, they're racist dumbasses who can't see the Batarians are forced to hate Humans and those who voice that they don't are likely killed on-sight by the Hegemony. Sort of like how if you were German and aided Jews, those good Germans were killed by the piece of **** Germans that the average US citizen believed were ALL Germans in that time period.

A) I saved the sick batarian on my canon playthrough

B) I did not kill the Batarians threatning Mordin's assistant on my canon Shep

C) Where is your proof? This is an intellectual conversation. We need hard facts that the Batarians were apparently forced to hate us.

D) If you cant have a conversation without insulting people and their opinions you need to leave.

Hell even Garrus had a batarian squadmate. Wasn't he a hacker?

He didn't say it in the proudest tone. Thing is, the Batarians severed all ties with all Council races, making themselves a "rogue state" (codex), thus nobody really likes them, including aliens. Furthermore, all Batarians we've seen seem to suffer from an inferiority-superiority complex that shifts erratically. They also all act like ****s towards everyone.

An analogy floating around is comparing them to the middle east. They hate themselves and everyone else who gets involved with them. Those who keep they're distance aren't viewed in a high place either. Exactly like the middle east.

We're perfect and our ways are better. Go F you.

Well, I get that. I really do. I just don't see why batarians are needed as contrast when there are plenty of humans doing questionable things; TIM paramount amongst them. That's like his whole reason for existence--to highlight all that humanity can be, both the good and the bad.

I myself don't hate batarians. I realize they're just a fictional species in a video game. My main Shepard has more than a few screws loose when it comes to them though (ruthless colonist), so whatever is coming in ME3 should present an interesting moral conflict for him.

Batarians claim racism through enslavement is part of they're culture. Thing is, the only slaves we've seen are Humans, not aliens. Has anyone seen the batarian controlled planets and they're descriptions? Yeah, not pretty, they're mean evil bastards.

I personally hope the Reapers take them all out, and seeing that the "Cannibal" Husks are huskified Batarians. Bye bye Batarians, I won't miss them. nobody else won't either.

I would actually be pretty upset if any form of life was manipulated and enslaved by a spacefaring race of robotic cuttlefish. Because -- I can't believe I'm saying this for what must be the fourth or fifth time -- regardless of what their government does, or what a few pirates and criminals do, chances are more than likely that there are decent people who happen to be batarians.

And wishing for the utter annihilation of a free-thinking species, whether they be dolphin, human, asari or batarian, is terrible.

Correction: the Batarian Hegemony severed all ties with the Council, not the entirety of the batarian race. I'm sure there were even some batarians who were upset or skeptical about their government's dropout from Citadel representation.

Funny, haven't seen one yet. we probably won't either. The only "nice" Batarian I saw was the one I saved by accident in Mordin's recruitment mission. Even then he seemed in malcontent. Ungrateful ass.

As for "enslavement", it's better then what I'd do if I had the power. Consider they're imminent wipe from the galaxy by the Reapers a cleansing on behalf of Mr. karma for decades of Human enslavement.

They want to turn us into gods and are killing our enemies. Maybe Saren had the right idea after all.

This conversation has enlightened me a bit...

The Reapers should win... all races are capable of hate and vile things and I know and admit that... I am not stereotyping the Batarians... The Codex, the news in the game... a lot of it makes me dislike the Batarians as a whole but I do not judge individuals.

So call me racist or a monster for having a problem with slavery. That makes sense.
There is no Hard Data pointing in the other direction concerning the Batarians... and evn if there was dont you think that the Council tried to reason with the Batarians?

Remember the Batarians left the Citadel... they use to be a Citadel species.... they walked out on the Council because they had a temper tantrum over the fact that the Council did not offer them exclusive colonization rigths in the Terminus Systems which would have kept us from colonizing planets.

I think I am done here this thread has gotten out of hand...

The Batarian hate stems from them being one of the favorite whipping boys of the devs. They lack an even handed portrayal and are the convenient mooks for whatever mission they come up with.

The only alien species that has it worse are the Vorcha.

Because they're not human.  They're the "them," the group we're not a part of.  We don't feel compelled to apologize for or dissociate from them because we're not batarians.

The writers, intentionally or no, are playing a socio-psychological game with us.  They're exploiting the group mentality we all have for some (as of yet) unknown purpose.

Should I highlight the "Hegemony" part? You're equating the state with the race and-- suahgsdfsdf

I don't, either, and I've got a Shep in a similar situation.

Still hate vampires.

Don't remember but it does sound like something I'd say. I faintly remember someone saying something about them not being alive and nothing more then animals who could talk, and me responding angrily at said person due to my intolerance to human (real world human) racism/ignorance.

The Batarians are good people and if possible my Shepard will recruit them for her human-led coalition against the three council races. If we can work out a deal involving colonization rights in the traverse and for them to cease supporting criminal activities against our colonies then we're cool.

It's like in High School, the kids with glasses would often be pushed around and called "four-eyes". The difference being that this time it's literal.
