The Batarian hate stems from them being one of the favorite whipping boys of the devs. They lack an even handed portrayal and are the convenient mooks for whatever mission they come up with.

The only alien species that has it worse are the Vorcha.

To be fair killing Vorcha is fun....exceedingly fun.

That's not true and you know it. He said the reason himself in the conversation. He saw Shepard was Human and responded in anger due to the rumor of the virus being human made as humans were uneffected.

Well, I get that. I really do. I just don't see why batarians are needed as contrast when there are plenty of humans doing questionable things; TIM paramount amongst them. That's like his whole reason for existence--to highlight all that humanity can be, both the good and the bad.

Because they're not human.  They're the "them," the group we're not a part of.  We don't feel compelled to apologize for or dissociate from them because we're not batarians.

The writers, intentionally or no, are playing a socio-psychological game with us.  They're exploiting the group mentality we all have for some (as of yet) unknown purpose.

Meh. District 9 did a much better job of toying with and eventually inverting the concept of "other"

I myself don't hate batarians. I realize they're just a fictional species in a video game. My main Shepard has more than a few screws loose when it comes to them though (ruthless colonist), so whatever is coming in ME3 should present an interesting moral conflict for him.

I don't, either, and I've got a Shep in a similar situation.

Still hate vampires.

I'm currently replaying VTMB, and realizing that I too am disliking of vampires. Probably for reasons other than your own, however.

Don't remember but it does sound like something I'd say. I faintly remember someone saying something about them not being alive and nothing more then animals who could talk, and me responding angrily at said person due to my intolerance to human (real world human) racism/ignorance.

To be fair, pretty much every member of their race except the queen doesn't seem to be more intelligent than a varren.

I end up saving him in both Paragonish and Renegadish runs.
The paragon does it because he's an overly polite nancy boy.
The renegade saves him to prove something approaching moral superiority.

Listen to his very first words when Shep approaches him...he is expecting Shep to mug him....Batarian: "You don't even have the decency to wait for me to die"....something along those lines.

Oh, you mean the ones in the Listening Posts, Hot Labs and Tram Stations? The ones the Queen explicitly said were insane and beyond saving due to isolation and lack of nurturing from the Queen by the Peak 15 scientists?

To quote Kaidan the psychologist's words of wisdom; "Lock a child in a dark closet until he's an adult and he won't come out alright". That applies to every living organism, including animals.

Dude, did you even talk to the Queen? I don't think so.

Seriously, we agreed that Batarians are fictional... it's a good thing that we did, it's a fact worth acknowledging. Hating them makes as much sense as defending them from hate... because they are fictional and apart from the established lore we don't know anything about them... and things we do know? They are hate worthy.

For all I know that one Batarian on Omega was the only "nice" one, and he was nice only after I saved his sorry ass from certain death, he was plainly aggressive towards me the moment I approached him. Batarians are the kind of race that enslave people, try to assassinate galactic establishments, beat up hookers and they consider terrorism as the best way of resolving their problems.

While people hating them have a lot of proof to show that Batarians are a race of horrible individuals, - anyone who is trying to defend them from that hate has only assumptions that have nothing to do with what BioWare established in their games, licensed comics and books.

While haters are judging the whole race by many mercenaries, thugs, slavers, bartenders, killers and terrorists, the defenders clutch to one rude individual who happened to be thankful for saving his life.

That's what every alien claims in that mission, why would he be any different? Stop defending him/them, they don't deserve it.

It's like an African slave defending a racist American 200 years ago.

Yeah, the ones that wouldn't have had any will but their queen's anyway.

And yes, I did talk to the queen. Then I killed her, Mr. Pwener, I watched her die... with a certain satisfaction I might add.

A) I saved the sick batarian on my canon playthrough

B) I did not kill the Batarians threatning Mordin's assistant on my canon Shep

I was not speaking of you, but rather those who blindly hate them without using logic. Granted, my wording far from conveyed that properly if at all.

Omega4RelayResident wrote...
C) Where is your proof? This is an intellectual conversation. We need hard facts that the Batarians were apparently forced to hate us.

It can be considered a possibility that they may be forced to keep their opinions to themselves, considering how the Hegemony claims to it's population that Humans (more than likely) are ruthless thugs who "stole" the worlds they wanted to colonize on (which they did, with the Council backing them):

http://masseffect.wikia.com/wiki/Batarians
In the early 2160s, humans began to colonize the Skyllian Verge, a region the batarians were already actively settling. The batarians asked the Citadel Council to intervene and declare the Verge an area of "batarian interest". When the Council refused, the batarians closed their Citadel embassy and severed diplomatic and economic relations, becoming an inward-looking rogue state.

Despite their government basically bringing it upon themselves to be kicked out.

Also, their government does NOT allow their citizens to leave Batarian space:

The Terminus Systems are infested with batarian pirate gangs and slaving rings, fueling the stereotype of the batarian thug. It should be noted that these criminals do not represent average citizens, who are forbidden to leave batarian space by their omnipresent and paranoid government.

Omega4RelayResident wrote...
D) If you cant have a conversation without insulting people and their opinions you need to leave.

If you feel insulted, I'll apologize. But, I wasn't speaking about anyone in particular or in response to anyone or anything beyond the topic in-general. I have a low tolerance for those who judge all without attempting to understand their side, no matter the group. Blame the individual, not the group.

Telling someone to leave doesn't work on a forum. Pointless to demand someone to when you're not in the position to force me not to.

You could have had a powerful ally against the Reapers, and they still acquire Huskified Brood Warriors and Workers. Good job you racist bastard, good job indeed. Wonder if you'd do the same in real life. Probably not, you'd just have a breakdown and go into panic due to the preassure of the situation.

They only hate them cause we have not yet seen a batarian squadmate, and thus another side of the coin from the usual batarian thug stereotype(except from some civilians in omega). They would hate, or at least dislike, the geth and the krogans also without Wrex and Legion.

I disagree with that statement about Krogans.  With all their faults and anger, most Krogans have a highly developed sense of honor and loyalty.  They are staright forward and say what they mean and mean what they say, a rare trait in the council species.  Also, if you bothered to roam around Tuchanka in ME2 you will also see that they prize their children above all else.  You can hear one Krogan talk about how he missed the chance to talk to his child and how much that bummed him out, but was also proud of him and his abilities.

While the Krogan have showed us many sides of themselves, all Batarians have done is show us how greedy and petty they are.  They attack our settlement only to have their asse shanded to them and run to complain to the council.  They try to destroy a city with a giant asteroid, and all because people like us more.  They also tend to blame their problems on everyone but themselves.  Yes I have an intense dislike for Batarians, which is one of the many reasons I enjoy the ME games so much.  The Devs didn't do their jobs properly if you don't care of have an opinion.

We haven't met many batarians really, most of the ones we meet are enemies (but this is also the case with humans and turians), however there are a few good ones we meet. The ones from Mordin's recruitment mission are actually very reasonable provided you aren't hostile to them - the ones who are threatening Daniel agree that he isn't spreading the plague and stand down without inciting violence. The sick batarian you cure admits that his previous hatred of humans was irrational and that he was wrong about a lot of things. Also read about this fellow:

"Youth United is a galaxy-wide extranet group that aims to connect young people of all species. Founder Darchas Clark says he wants to provide a helpful, positive environment for children to learn about each others' cultures. A batarian raised in a human family, Clark says he knows things can be difficult for young people of mixed backgrounds. "My parents were good people, but they didn't know how to help with my struggle to relate to either batarian or human cultures when I was a kid," he recalls. "It's important that Youth United lets kids know they're not alone in that struggle. There's still too many vicious and ignorant attitudes towards mixed families out there." The group's services include chat sessions with peers and counselors, free classes on alien languages and cultures, and a guide to the galaxy's major legal systems." -- Cerberus daily news

Also bear in mind that the only portrayal of humans that many batarians ever get to see are negative ones:

"The average Aratoht citizen only sees humans on the news, usually featured in stories of trials and executions of accused spies." -- Aratoht codex entry in ME2

So in the same way that many people on this board distrust batarians because they claim that they are only seeing negative portraits of them, in the same way perhaps batarians distrust humans due to the hegemony's portrayal of humanity.

I'm honestly laughing at two personas here... one thinks that the fact that he's playing a character like a psycho makes him cool and pretends that he felt any kind of satisfaction while clicking on a sign and watching a death animation and another calling him racist and thinking it has any relevance to the first's actual behavior or personality.

Snap out of it guys.

Those are not his words....try to get closer to the dialog to make your points....He is assuming since Humans can't catch the plague, it's humans who invented it....he goes on to explain...if Shep asks about the Vorcha....why he doesn't believe it's the Vorcha, his reasonings are fairly sound..

The African slave comment.....as I am not an American, that does not have the guilt impact you are attempting to foist on me, so don't bother going there.....and you are making the assumption that ALL Batarians are slavers, we do not have enough information to set that in stone.

I know it doesn't have any relevance to his actual personality, I pointed that out. Anyway, he's acting like a child, so stop it! and before you call on me, he started it!
