Has any straight male or female ever done a playthrough with a gay Hawke? Do you get anything special for having a gay relationship? All of my Hawkes are males so I might consider playing as a female to get the lesbo sexy scene with Isabela or Merril.

Yep, I'm going to complain about gender blindness again. I only played as Male Hawke who went for Isabela, but I get the feeling that this doesn't apply to just this set up. If you're going to make "everyone bi" at least make it believable BioWare. 98% of the conversations between MHawke and Isabela is probably interchangeable with FHawke. It was another "tough decision" like recycled maps.

@ Rifneno's comment regarding FHawke and Isabela. That almost makes me jealous MHawke doesn't get any special dialogue with Izzy. LOL :(

There are differences, though:

Isabela has a completely different attitude towards a female Hawke after the sex scene.

I'm not sure what else you want besides random, purposeless gendered comments outside the romance scenes (which are also there, anyway). I don't need my character's gender acknowledged every five seconds.

I'm pretty sure all of the LIs have some degree of varied dialogue depending on gender. Fenris is the most gender blind (aside from the dick joke but Hawke gets to say that), but I know Merrill and Anders also have several different dialogue points.

when I think about gay guys having sex I kinda feel a bit sick in my stomach. It kinda reminds of what happens to  male fresh meat that are thrown into a state prison. Not that i'm being sexist its just the thought of a d__k going into a guy's ass creeps me the hell out

I[m sorry, it's nice to be able to imagine my LI as straight when I play a straight character. Forcing me to hear that Anders and Karl were loves is kinda breaks the role for me. When I play straight, my LI is straight. When I play gay, my LI is gay. I like that Bioware gives me the choice to imagine my LI as I desire; i.e., straight/gay/bisexual. I'm glad they didn't take that away.

Dragon Age 2 is actually the first game in which I've successfully completed a homosexual relationship.  (I almost exclusively use female PCs, and so far the Bioware s/s options for females never appealed to me at all... Leliana and Liara ::shudder::)

I have a Lady Hawke/Isabela and it's awesome.

I don't think you get any dialogue acknowledging a homosexual relationship in DA2.  IIRC, it's not really a huge deal in Thedas.  Most people view it like "well that's kinda quirky but whatever", I think.  I'm pretty sure that Anders has the most reference to it.

Tbh I wish all the companions would stop hitting on me since the romances seem immature and entirely unnecessary. The lesbian scenes in particular don't exactly do much to make gamers seem mature. The gays and bisexuals in the game also seem fairly unrealistic since I live in one of the gay centrals of Scotland and all the gays I've met have been fairly forward and not half so subtle in their approaches as the Dragon Age characters. Stupid companions. Come on people, get your heads in the game and out of your crotches! We've a world to save.

Hmm. I must have missed the scene where Aveline hits on Hawke. A pity.

This.  While I have never personally done a gay romance (it's just not my thing) I do like that it's available. I have friends who do them and enjoy them immensely. I liked, however, that when I romanced Leliana as a male warden there was no indication ingame that she was bi, and that fit my rp'ing just fine, even though I knew she was a bi character. That is a nice touch that BW has done for the LI's in their games.

Why do you single out the lesbian scenes? Is the underlying assumption here that the only people playing them are men who want to see some girl-on-girl action? That is far from the truth, you know.
Also, being familiar with a small number of gay people doesn't mean that you can tell what a "realistic" take on homosexual/bisexual characters should be. We are not part of some hivemind. People differ from each other.

And sure, the romance part of the game isn't strictly necessary, but neither is party interaction and banter. They are there because they make the game more enjoyable for a lot of players.

I know for sure that I enjoy them. It helps form my character in my mind and give me re-playability to the game.

I singled out the lesbian scenes because since most gamers are male it's easier to tag us with the "horny nerd" stereotype when the media trots out cringeworthy lesbian scenes from Bioware games.

Besides I'd rather the teams spent less time on cringeworthy
romances and channelled those energies elsewhere. If I wanted to make
two digital girls make out I'd play the Sims.

As to gays, well since the pool is smaller they tend to be more direct in general. Speaking from experience here, spent a lot of time in gay clubs with a lot of gay friends so it's not like it's some mysterious clique to me.

Yes, both it is not so strange in Thedas... homosexuality is just a quirk with non-gay people simply shrug about

Lots of generalizations there...how nice. Image IPB

If you consider the romances "cringeworthy" then don't choose any romance options. Play the game without them. They are optional. Nothing is forced upon you, and not all of the companions flirt with you. They have other (better) things to do, you know.

Glad that you visited some gay clubs. But that does not make you an expert as to what anyone in the LGBT community may be seeking in their personal lives or in their games.

I must have missed out on there being more female gamers than male, and stats to back that up. Fact of the matter there *is* more male gamers than female and there *is* still the "horny undersexed nerd" stereotype to deal with, and cringeworthy lesbian scenes as found in Bioware games do nothing to deter that stereotype. People see those vids on Youtube and think "wow that's lame, do those nerds jack off to that" and other toss.

And no, my point was that the gays as represented in Dragon Age are unrealistic and not at all like the vast majority of those you meet in real life, many of whom choose to affect an irritating air of campness.

If you meet gays at clubs that might just be the reason that they are not so subtle. I have gays friends as well and none of them obviously hits on people outside of the clubs, they are far too shy. But when they go to gay clubs they go to score... hence the reason for not being sublte.

It's interesting that only the "lesbian" sex scenes are cringeworthy. Having seen some of the m/f scenes on YouTube, I could honestly say that I cringed a little.

"An irritating air of campness?" I don't recall any characters in the DA-verse that could possibly be gay that also were campy. *mulls* Nope. Not a one.

Lol, there is that actually, but I've been hit on by a fair few guys outside of clubs too. I suppose it's because I'm more "cute" and "pretty" than "rugged" and "handsome" and appeal to gay guys and bi girls more :(

Tbh all of the sex scenes are massively cringeworthy but it's the lesbian ones that would seemingly appeal more to the "horny nerd" than the hetro ones.

And yeah, that's what I mean. Where the hell are the really camp gays you often get? 'Tis unrealistic to not include them. (Though I'm glad they didn't, I like how the bi dude characters are subtle about it).

So what if they do? Stereotypes are incredibly hard to kill. Even if all of us overnight turned into a bunch of tea-sipping intellectuals and every game was an artistic masterpiece, so long as the media distributes that stereotype it will continue to exist and some people will inevitably believe it. That's their problem. And I should believe that there are a lot of games that to far more to strengthen the stereotype without a single lesbian romance in it, even.

And no, my point was that the gays as represented in Dragon Age are unrealistic and not at all like the vast majority of those you meet in real life, many of whom choose to affect an irritating air of campness.

I don't act like this. None of my gay/bisexual friends act like this. The gay people in Dragon Age are not unrealistic, they are simply not the sort you're used to.

Bisexual men tend not to act so campy though because they still want girls and acting like Big Gay Al isn't going to get them far in that respect.

Only in Darkspawn Chronicles which lore is not to be taken as canon according to some dev... Don't remember the exact source.
