Sorry if that upsets you but developers can't design games like its 2001. Women gamers are not going away.  And not all of us are into farmville and such.

Oh and I bought Fallout and Fallout New Vegas and KNOW plenty of female gamers that have as well.

You're going to be disappointed there's no real romance options then. You do however get a dog.

I PLAYED BOTH AND DID NOT CARE WHETHER THERE WERE ROMANCES OR NOT!

Its obvious you are a sexist and resent women gamers. Why are you so scared of us?

And your stereotype of women is pretty insulting. <_<

It's incredibly easy to get skewed statistics like that given the mass popularity of the Wii and online Facebook games like Farmville and the like so now more people are likely to be like "Yes, I'm a gamer" than before, not to mention females buying consoles are likely to have only been doing it for their sons and boyfriends. Let's be honest though, girls aren't about to sit down and play any of the Total War games, or Europa Universalis, Fallout, Gothic 3 and the like, more like MarioKart and WiiFit and the Sims. Dragon Age I suppose might be more popular with girls than I had given credit for though because of the romances.

As a female who has owned a oldgameboy, a gameboy gba, a gameboy advance, a ds, a ds3, a psp, a playstation1, a playstation 2, a playstation 3, a wii and an x-box I find that insulting. All those console has served to my own pleasure and certainly not my non-existing son or my little brother who could buy his own machines because he didn't get mine.
I have played rpg pretty much since Golden Sun (Yes I started in jrpg ). I admit to finding shooters boring, but I used to enjoy a good strategy game. I am in it for the good story - so shooters is normally boring. I have played several survival games...
I don't like Mariokarts... and all the wii-fit games makes me gag. Escpacially because the poprluarity of the 'family' wii games robbed my from my project zero /fatal frame 4. I loved that series... and I was so very sad that I don't understand Japanesse so I could just buy the game and enjoy.

I like bioware because of the characters and the universe. Mass Effect/Dragon age and Jade empire all felt like rich world with character I loved. Bioware is my faverorite rpg. My favoerite game is still Theresia though, because I just loved the creepy background and the slowly getting the memories back.

In other words. I am sorry, but I find your sterotype slightly insulting and I would find it even more insulting if bioware cut things because someone is scared to

You know, you really have some interesting viewpoints on all manner of subjects. And you are very fond of generalizing. Something which is not going to endear you to people (as a word of advice).

I, for one, know plenty of girls who would gladly play Fallout, who would gladly have their protagonists heft a grenade launcher and just blow some s**t up. So again...you're generalizing. And it's not doing you any favors.

Wow, guy.  Wow.  This is why male gamers have such poor stereotypes surrounding them.

For one thing, enjoying a romance subplot in a game shouldn't necessarily be a bad thing.  Why is a romance subplot considered shallow or pandering or silly compared to "HEY HERE IS A GUN MAKE IT GO BOOM"?  Well-done romances of the Bioware variety usually reflect better characterizaton as a whole in the game, which should please anyone (male or female) who enjoys a good character-driven story.  By dismissing it entirely, you are reinforcing quite a few stereotypes about male gamers yourself.

And assuming that a woman isn't going to like a game because it doesn't have romance is extremely sexist, stupid, and misinformed.  And I can't think of anything else to say to you besides personal insults, so I'm just going to bow out of this whole thing.  Grow up, dude.

To be honest, this thread is the first I've heard of a lot of these stereotypes in quite a while. Sure you can still find them in some corners but day to day it's pretty much non-existent, I can tell someone I like games without them giving me a "You're one of those people" looks, at worst I get an "aren't you a little old?" look.

As for the OP: yes, no, and <_<.

Interesting that there seem to be so many female posters for this particular game series though. I do wish girls would have the balls (lol) to advertise their gaming tendencies as much as guys irl though. I tire of girls and people quickly unless I find a common ground with them and gaming is my favouritest thing ever. I'm pretty though so I'm allowed to be forward about that fact and still hold people's attentions ^_^

She sux, HL 2 was balls. So boring and generic and the characters were so 2 dimensional, the guns were unsatisfying and the plot made not a lick of sense and didn't even end properly. 'Twere pretty for it's day though and well optimised.

Sounds like she was a cool chick! ^_^

I loved it too! :wizard:

But to some insecure males, I guess I should be playing Farmville and making pies.

Its a sad reflection of society that for every secure male gamer like you, there are three others who resent women gamers and how games have evolved because of them.

Mostly it is because the guys I know don't play. Unless it is my little brothers in which case I sat them down on the couch and forced them to play the games untill they liked it. I am pretty straight foreward about my gamining tendencies, but most of my friends (girls as guys) a giving me a 'Oh no, she is talking about some game again, and we have no place to hide' - look whenever I start, and up untill now I haven't really enjoyed forums because I don't like talking with strangers (and english isn't my first langue.)

Lul, I hate when that happens when talking to people about a fave game of yours and they just do not like the game. Your english is better than a lot of people from my corner of the world btw. All right the last part was boot up your arse so far that it will knock your teeths out - or something like that. But I think that I have derailed this topic far enough now, and it is past midnight here so I will go to bed.

To answer the op once more. As a straight female I have done Merrill romance one and I didn't get anything special out of it other than a different story - which is how I think it should be.

Gay male here. And if I have any issue with the romances it's that the male options all sucked! Isabela and Merrill run rings around the navel-staring emo Fenris and bunny-boiler fanatic Anders. The girls each have more humour in one piece of party banter than both boys put together do the whole game! And as for Sebastian not-even-a-kss-from-me-til-the-wedding-night Vael, well... :unsure:

That said, the Anders romance does take on an extra level of meaning when done gay. He has a line about 'A hundred years from now, someone like me will love someone like you, and there will be no templars to tear them apart." Gay metaphor-tastic. Similar to the break-up scene with Alistair (modded to allow a gay romance) when he talks about the need to have children and the people not accepting you as queen!:lol::lol:

In general I say Bioware did the right thing with the romances in DA2. My canon LI will be Merrill. I just haven't decided whether I'll be MaleHawke or FemHawke.

You know, that actually came as quite the shock to me finding out that Alistair wasn't romanceable in DA:O. I mean really, he genuinely did seem like he should have been.

I quite liked how intense and passionate about his beliefs Anders was though, was nice to not have a character being lighthearted about absolutely everything. Fenris was kind of cute in how broody he was, and his sense of humour was very dry and I loved that though. Sebastien was too evangelistic and chaste to be much fun, and as Scot myself his accent isn't exotic at all.

Course, Merril was my fave because her accent is to die for and she was rli cute in what she said :x

I'm trying to romance Merrill now as F!Hawke...I'm not enjoying it. I have a male Hawke romancing Anders, but I hear his romance is kind of creepy. Typically, I romance Fenris, because I like his character development if you friendmance him. He's an incredibly passionate character when he wants to be, and I enjoy his dry sense of humor.

I don't really do gay romance for 'variety'. It's more like, I romance based on the character I'd most enjoy my character having a relationship with. On my very first playthrough, I was going for Anders when I noticed I could do so as a male. Then...Fenris showed up. It was a done deal after that.

The one romance I'm finding to be dull - surprisingly - is Isabela's. I'm doing so with a Rogue female Hawke, and it feels like her back story is more of a justification as to why she's so loose and carefree than something genuine and moving. I dunno, I'm early in the romance, so maybe she'll change my mind.

Then there's also just the fact that some characters I can't see being in a heterosexual relationship. I know Isabela sleeps with anyone, but for some reason I don't think I could romance her with a Male Hawke. *shrug*

@Catriana - Isabela's romance arc needs to fully develop to have the full impact, imo. It's in act 3 where she will admit to falling for Hawke and will, in essence, surrender to those feelings and you'll get to see the scope of how her character has developed.

Biased opinion of me, I'm sure, but I can only see her with F!Hawke as well. They just make a striking couple. :)

Oh, good. I hope so. I never really cared for Isabela in DAII (she was like a female overly exaggerated Zevran to me), but I love learning more about character backgrounds and the like. I look forward to seeing how it plays out.

I think Isabela's romance was kind of like Zevran's, in that it's easy to get the casual part, but the deeper relationship takes more effort.  I love her, but even I had her run off the first time I played, because I didn't realize that there would be no other chance to convince her to stay.  Once I did keep her, I was really impressed by how much character development she does get, by the third act.  Many other party members don't really learn anything or change over time, but Isabela exhibits growth and maturity that really impressed me.  Even when I don't romance her, I love her third act conversations.

@Catriana - TeenZombie phrased it much better than I could. My current playthrough has Merrill as Hawke's LI, and I found it difficult to *not* romance Isabela. Hopefully you'll find the romance worth it.

*had to make sure I was in spoiler section :P*   You are right, I think for Izzy it comes down to dealing with the relic. After the end of Act 2, and when she returns, even in a non romantic role she develops  a lot. None of the others do this, but she does.

The other thing I would like to add - Isabela's romance is definitely much more multi-dimensional, but you don't get all of it from just the conversations between Hawke and Isabela - the rest of it comes out through smaller actions and banters with teammates, especially with Merrill. The part I like most is that it makes perfect sense - it's things Isabela wouldn't say to Hawke directly, but would to someone else.

*sigh*

One of these days, just one, I'd like to see Isabela come up in a thread without someone immediately piling on the slut shame.
