Oh boy, don't ever run into a Super Mutant Overlord then.

Pft thats what rocket launchers and Fatman's are for.

What if you run into one inside a building and like 2 feet infront of you?

Poke it with a really big stick. I hear tickling it with big feather also works.

The odd hand movements characters make in RPGs when they are talking. For example, Deus Ex Human Revolution.

Hmm....

"Pft thats what rocket launchers and Fatman's are for"

Just bring lots of stim packs and good DT armor.

And remember. To use your body as a shield or a chance to strike back, isn't suicide unless you die.

QTE's especially ones that you need to do to beat a boss battle. It makes me rage that i spent ages beating a boss then i have to start all over again because i wasn't expecting to have to press a combination of buttons in the right order to finish it.

It's a big part of why I hate Dragon Age 2.

This. The DA2 companions are a joke.

Being told that my actions will change the course of the story only to have it be static.
Quests that tell me to find something and then immediately tell me exactly where it is.
But I think my biggest one is sacrificing fun gameplay for some story point that doesn't even matter.

-Probably the "AAA mentality", games gotta look amazing and be very polished before being interesting design-wise and pushing the envelope. Screw polished "products", ready to be digested by the masses. Give me something interesting to play through. If it's largely bug-free then sure, that's great. But I'll much rather take a buggy but interesting game than your standard "hollywood product."

-Sledgehammer storytelling. Where the game will lead you by the nose because the all-mighty writers just needs to have that particular moment play out juuuuust like they want it.

Destroying established lore like what Fallout: 3, BoS, and Tactics did to the BoS and other factions/characters.

DLC (I'm starting to live with it because Obsidian and other companies are really giving us our money's worth).

Gore overkill. If it happens through a critical that probably occures once every 0.5% of the time, then I'm okay with it; something like Fallout: 1/2 wasn't so bad, but post Fallout: 3 it just gets boring.

Created characters being voice in an RPG. If you are going to go the voiced main character route, just give us a pre-determined character and stop trying to pretend it is our own.

Bad soundtracks that don't fit the atmosphere. Even though the tracks are nice in Fallout: 3, they just do not fit the dark, moody Wasteland. It was too much Oblivion sounding.

Fallout: 3 really got on my nerves, but for some reason, that is the only game that came to mind. I know this applies to different games too, but the lore thing probably only applies to the pseudo-Fallouts in my opinion.

This right here.  More focus on engaging tactical combat and less on twitch gameplay and gay elf sex would be nice.

I remember getting stuck in games like Ultima 3, a d&d gold box game or Kings quest back in the day and talking with my buddy, in school or something, about different things we could try or methods we could use.  It was part of the whole experence !    Now games are so damn easy, with all the causalized mechanics and hand holding they pretty much play themselfs without too much thought required.

Yup I hate how this generation its all about the graphics.
I start playing Deus Ex Human Revolution and I'm enjoying the gameplay and the story.  I'm thinking "the guy who does Jensen's voice is great (thought it was Christian Kane for a while).
Then I start looking at youtube videos of it.
Several comments saying pretty much the same thing.
"the graphics are crap I can't believe this!"
"what a terrible game graphics are terrible"

Ugh youtube is going to give me a brain anurysm but this is just pathetic.  A games quality is based purely on how good it looks and not how fun or engaging it is.
People who complain about the graphics like that is what is wrong with the industry right now.

Fallout 3 didn't ''destroy'' the lore of the Brotherhood, they explained the difference between the Brotherhood out West and East, that they were like the orignal Brotherhood but Lyons wanted to save the people of the capitol wasteland, and abandoned the original misson. And that to the orignal Brotherhood out West Lyon's would be a traitor. So no, Bethesda didn't destroy it as they explain the change, and that the Outcasts basically are the same as the West Brotherhood.

The Enclave I believe what they did with them was fine, I doubt that the Oil rig and Navarro were their only base's somehow, and the events that took place with them in Fallout 2 is mentioned.

Supermutants, again the change is explained, they were made from a modified FEV. It would make sense that the Captiol wasteland mutants would be different, as the Vaults were experiments Why would Vault-tec do the same experiment in two different locations? A modifed version of the same experiment seems likely though.

Focusing on the graphics and not on the story in story-driven games. That's why I didn't finish Fallout 3, somehow I enjoy a good story more than hundred '"awesome" ways to blow somebody's head or limbs off.

The other ones are ridiculously long loading screens, especially when they occur before a tough fight and cutscenes that you have to watch over and over again with no way of skipping them.

Different strokes for differnt folks I guess. I thought the radio music in Fallout 3 was brilliant, although pretty repitive. For me the music just fit into the wasteland.

I can overlook a lot in games because I understand that there are certain limitations to the medium. However, there are two things that really bug me in video games.

First is infinite of poorly designed spawning of enemies. It absolutely drives me nuts when enemies appear out of nowhere for no apparent reason or just keep coming. Yes, I'm staring right at DA2 on this one. It took every bit of good will Bioware had built over the years to keep me going. Many similar games end up in the trash.

My biggest issue (mostly in RPGs) is when defeating the final boss requires something that has nothing to do with what you have done the rest of the game. Here you are at the final battle. You are about to demonstrate to the gaming world you superior mage build and general awesomeness. Here comes the final boss and what do you have to do? Beat it with some hammer you just found (Risen) despite the fact that you have no melee skills at all or shoot the stupid dragon with a series of ballistas (Two Worlds Two) while chugging health potions. It makes me feel like I just wasted 30+ hours of my life building a character who's skillset had no impact on the outcome of the final battle.

  • Cutscenes that can not be paused.  Real life happens - phones ring, deliverymen knock on the door, and family members need you to find papers or fix snacks - and usually in the middle of a crucial story moment.  Where's my pause button?
  • On the flip side, unskippable cutscenes.  If I'm playing an area for a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th time, I shouldn't be forced to wade through the same cinematics again if I don't desire.

Somewhat related to this, I hate when forced through some long unskippable sequence on the way to the character creator. Nothing was more painful than having to repeatedly go through Mass Effect 2's lengthy intro sequence repeatedly just because you need to fix some minor detail on your face and can't edit it during game.

On the other end of that one, if you put some bit following the end credits, and someone attempts to skip those credits, they shouldn't skip that scene as well. I wanted to gouge my eyes out during Deus Ex:HR's endless array of drunken developer photos on the way to the ending.

QTEs in games with action game mechanics
QTEs in RPGs

mandatory unfairly difficult stealth/escort missions which prevent you from continuing until completed

poor directions so you need to look at an FAQ/walkthrough in order to continue..

1. Bugs and the "we'll patch it attitude"
2. Quick time events
3. When games try and do too much. Do what you do and do it well. Things like the turret battles in KoTOR aren't part of the core game and detract from rather than add to gameplay.
4. Boss battles. These are almost universally badly done and the main offenders are that the game "teaches" you a way to play the game and then promptly throws a boss fight at you that is nerfed and has nothing to do with the rest of the game - hello Deus Ex on that front.

I agree with 1, 3 and part of 4. Some boss battles are done well but some are done terribly and just feature an overpowered enemy and as for Deus Ex...yeah, the boss battles really didn't give you choices.

Games being released unfinished/broke.

Related to that: reviews never mentioning any of these problems. Latest example being NHL 12, all the reviews I read praised the revamped Be a Pro mode saying how your no longer a one man team and alot of the issues have been fixed. Never bothering to mention all the new problems that have been introduced. Like no matter how well you play your not going to get on the special teams so theres games that your lucky if you get 3 minutes ice time even if your on the first line.

Poor AI and the belief that making enemies incredibly cheap is an acceptable substitute for clever enemies also annoys the hell out of me.

I personally hate bosses with a huge health -- JRPG's are especially to blame for this. By the end of the game, you're spending 45-120min on a boss battle thinking to yourself "but I just knocked off another 10,000+ pts of health....how much more does this thing have left?!" Increasing health on your enemies does not equal to an increase in gameplay quality!!!! Heck--Tales of Vesperia was especially bad for this, ramping up the health on the loser "tutorial" soldiers every time you fought them to make them seem harder to beat.

As far as undesirable characters go....I wish I could get rid of the kids that end up being forced onto my party at one point in time or another (again JRPGs are really to blame there). What makes game developers think I want to babysit some kid when I'm playng a game!?

Also, the ability to have multiple powers/abilities/whatever, but only being able to use 2-3 that you have "assigned" at the time. Romancing Saga, TFU2, Bioshock -- just a few to name.

Oh, and I too must agree on the unpausable cutscenes. I am always terrified to press the start button to pause a cutscene when necessary because I never know if it will skip ahead instead. Conversely, I know the only true surefire way to forcably pause a cutscene is typically by removing the batteries in your controller...a nuisance in itself.

Most of mine are game mechanics related.

1. Poor camera work. I'm trying to see where I'm jumping or what's chewing on the back of my head; the camera's busy focusing on that wall.

2. Forced game tutorials or forced tutorial levels that are not indicative of the rest of the games difficulty. Game, this is my third run through. I know how to crouch already, and showing me enemies that are pathetically weak compared to everything else you're about to throw at me is not cool.

3. Inconsistency in the rules. One game tells you something can't be done. The sequel has enemies doing that left and right, but you're still incapable. (I'm looking at you DA2. You & your teleporting mages)

4. Unrealistic "real" weapons. Shotguns do not have spread the size of a car at ten yards. Handguns are backup weapons or concealed carry weapons. Not alternatives for, or superior to, snipers and assault rifles.

5.Ridiculous collection achievements/trophies. You want to spread 10 items in out of the way places throughout the game? Fine. You want to spread 300 items throughout the game? No. Just no.

1.Teenagers as protagonist(Almost every JRPG is guilty of this)

2.Stealth missions in games not designed for stealth

3.Retail specific DLC

4.Games with overly long, non interactive cut-scenes.

5.Games with side missions that take up most of the game's play time and often contribute nothing to the game's central plot. Only exception is if they side quests manage to be interesting in their own right such as in Oblivion with the assassin's guild.

6.Games that put a huge emphasis on crafting items. I don't like spending most of the game screwing around with a menu, keep the crafting simple and satisfying and don't demand it like in The Witcher series.

7.Storylines in racing games. That is not to say there is no potential but I have never playing a racing game where the story didn't just get in the way.
Just focus on the fun racing like in Hot Pursuit.

8.Random battles:This is 2011, why do these still exist?

Laziness. I can't stand laziness....uninspired and lazy efforts irritate me to no end. I can forgive rough edges, especially for new IPs and developers, but I better see effort in quality.
