How bad is it to go without a rogue?

I guess I hate to miss anything along the way from beginning to end.  I've never tried a playthrough without a rogue to open chests or pick door locks.  I can't think of anything specific I really need from chests, but I'm not sure.

I really don't like feeling obligated to have Wynne and Lelianna in group unless I fill the healer or rogue postions.  There aren't a lot of options.

Anyone play through the game without a rogue?

you can playthrough without rogue as most chest are just normal items. you can retrace your step to open chest you miss except ostagar and warden keep. since you have gotten morrigan early, you can also respec her as the party healer or otherwise be a mage yourself and be the party healer.

Yeah, I was thinking most of the chests were normal too. I just wasn't sure if I overlooked anything critical I might regret. Thanks.

Yeah, there's nothing too essential in any of them. Off the top of my head a few trap-heavy rooms might be a bit tougher without a rogue disarming them (the one in the temple in the Brecilian Forest, for example), and you'll miss out on the XP from chests and traps, but that's about it. I did an all-warrior runthrough once, which was frankly great fun, and not half as difficult as I'd feared.

The loot in chests is pretty insignificant. Mostly if you have the DLC and have plenty of gold though. I don't remember finding actually useful gear in locked chests at any point, so it's mostly for a few extra potions and a lot of stuff to sell.

Traps may be a problem on higher difficulties, but you can just learn where they are and how to deal with them. Typically it isn't a big deal.

So I'd say go for it.

There isn't anything especially critical in locked chests. Without a rogue, you will not be able to finish the 'correspondence interruptus' quest (love letters) and you probably should avoid Slim Couldry's line as well.

Oh yeah...the XP from chests Posted Image ... that I do not like losing.  It's no big deal to go through the game at least once without a rogue, but man...lost loot a bummer and lost XP a huge loss.  It's not just an extra level or two but the extra skills.  I struggle with this.  I think it will get the better of me and I end up picking the same group over and over = Alistair, Morrigan, and Leliana.

I like Sten, Zevran and Oghren but that's just too much melee in one spot.  Anyways, thanks for the responses guys.

Zevran is never GREAT at opening locks, but you can choose to spec him to be able to open some, if you want. Or play a rogue yourself, and leave both of them at camp and take Sten or Oghren. Or play a mage yourself and leave Morrigan behind. I actually really loved playing a mage in this game, and that's not my usual character class of choice.

So does everyone always go with a healer then? Because I'm on my 2nd playthrough, 1st was on easy and second on normal and I'm not using Wynn, I'm using Morrigan for dmg as well.

I make Zevran run through all the traps - since he cant disable any - hehehe.... he is tuff he can take it....

But mostly I am the Trap Monkey :) I dont bother with healers - I tried Wynne but she was so fail I gave up I let my party members die if they cant hack it ( that means mostly Alibear for some reason - but that worx for me hahaha) ... and use the heal pots for me & zev if needed - I find we can handle anything as a duo.

I should note I run on Easy mode - it may be different on harder modes

Are you playing on PC?
If yes, there are 'lock bashing' and 'unlock spell' for warriors and mages, that also give you xp.
Advanced party + Party Comand for making your rogue your personal unlocker (mine is always Zev ^_^)
My Warden is usually a mage, but even when he's not, I don't use Wynne or Morrigan. E.g. my Cousland usually had Zev, Alistair and Sten - on Normal, with lot of potions and poultices, never had really big problem.

Healers are completely unnecessary. I've played three rogue ranger with spiders and Morrigan in spider mode (no healing), Shale + Sten + Oghren + Warden (Warrior) (no healing here either) and Morrigan, Warden mage, Shale and Leliana (also no healing). Play correctly and you don't really need many poultices either.

For the record, three rogues (all rangers) + Morrigan in spider mode is a total blast. You can have four spiders out, you and Zevran either ranged or in melee and Leliana shooting arrows. Once you get going you blow through the game with massive pwnage.

Actually, even when I was playing a rogue, I didn't bother putting points in opening locks. There's nothing worthwhile in the chests. The main benefit is the experience and most areas you can go back to with Leliana in tow to pick up anything you missed if you're really concerned about it.

You can do just fine without a Rogue, or even Tank or Healer.

The chests are usually inconsequential. I like having a rogue to sneak ahead and get peek at what's waiting for me.

I always bring a rogue along, mostly because I aim to reach level 25 by the end of the game. Gameplay-wise rogues are very useful early on, because you can get a lot of XP just by opening chests and detecting/disarming traps. Rogues also start with poison-making, which means that their burst DPS is unmatched early game (unless you decide to make other classes take poison-making, which would slow down their Combat Training/Persuasion progression and hurt you mid-game).
So as long as you're confident that your party can survive early game easy, then you can do without the rogue. Healers are another matter though, after finally getting the chance to play DA:O in console I realized that you should only think about skipping the healer if you play the PC version. Micromanagement is a lot less fun with the console version.
