heres a question...who honestly went for a relationship with either liara/ashley (kaidan/liara) the very first time they played through the game?

I don't have a problem with selecting Shepard's sexual preference, but since I then get accused of irrational homophobia (although the etymology of that word doesn't even mean what people think it means) everytime I voice my opinion on the matter, I've learned that it's just not worth the argument. It's nice that Bioware's acknowledging the homosexual fanbase of Mass Effect, but I just wish they'd remember the straight guys out there as well. For a straight guy, getting...flirted with by a gay guy is mildly uncomfortable, and just not something I could see happening in my head between guys like Shepard and Kaidan. Again, it's not that big a deal for me to ignore it, so I'm not going to make too big a fuss about it.
My other main issue is that we all enjoy the casual flirting (let's be honest, it adds an element of funny to the game) between the characters. Liara and Tali stumbling over themselves, Ashley sneaking sexual innuendo into the conversation, and Shepard complementing Dat Ass with Miranda. Some of the flirting is what puts you onto the romance paths in the first place. So if Kaidan flirts with MShep BEFORE the romance is initiated, then straight guys have to work through the awkward 'not interested' stuff. If he flirts with MShep AFTER the romance is initiated, then the gay fans miss out on what all the straight guys and gals got in the first two games.
Therefore, a 'toggle switch' at the start would work fine from my perspective (and I'm not trying to make a big deal out of it), the gay guys get their flirting and the straight guys keep their precious immersion intact.

Continuity? How would choosing a sexual orientation for Shepard at the start of the game help to preserve the continuity? There is no canon Shep with a canon sexuality, and as for the continuity in your own head - just don't pick any gay conversation options! And as far as continuity in NPC sexual orientations go, this makes NO sense. The game can't allow you to choose NPCs sexuality, so whatever you chose as your Sheps orientation shouldn't affect if an NPC is straight/bi/gay - the 'awkward dialogue' would happen either way. And seeing as a good number of the romances in ME2 had to be triggered by the player, odds are that dialogue wont happen unless you specificlly persue it.
It's like the devs said about DAII - just because you romanced someone in a hetrosexual relationship doesn't mean they weren't still attracted to both sexes. The choices of your own charachters sexuality doesn't affect the NPCs sexuality. Having a toggle switch to prevent the undesired sex from flirting with you would be like deciding 'Not only is this MY charachtrs sexuality, but also all of the possible LIs as well'.

Let me just say that when I go see a movie, I don't hear any gay people booing the screen when two people of the opposite sex kiss or do the nasty. So why does there have to be a toggle for someone because they feel uncomfortable with the idea that someone might like the same sex?
Shepard is the one to initiate the romances. If you don't want the option, simply ignore it. Why can't people be mature about this?

mostly agreed, though I'm not sure a lot of people feel the same way about choosing npc sexuality (there's a lot of "they can be straight in your game and gay in mine"). personaly when i talk about continuity, I'm talking about the sort of variables a writer has to concider when/if they are writing tie in books. they have to fit with every player's possible playthrough, not just on individual level (which is why I'm not exactly happy about former LI's getting their sexuality expanded - it can be tricky to pull off and still have it make sense even when you know that they were all over oposite sex Shepard in a different playthrough, I'm just not sure bioware is up to it - I have a feeling its going to be similar to Leliana's "it wasn't my time" and Anders's "you only thought I was dead" or maybe even like thermal clips when you just know what they are, even though they didn't even exist before Shepard died.)

You aren't going to be forced to be gay. People flirt with people who aren't interested often. It happens.

Not sure how 'acknowledging' one fanbase seems to mean another has been forgotten. As far as I can tell, no romances for straight guys are being removed to make way for same sex ones. You haven't been 'forgotten' just because something is being added in that you personally won't use.

And? I get hit on by women all the time and it's bit awkward to me since I'm not interested in them but I don't complain. Unless someone's extremly pushy, then hitting is a actually compliment. Yet some straight guys whine about it like it's the worst thing ever. Seriously, get over yourselves. People hit on people, that's how humans enter relationships, ya know? No other way, for you either. If a girl you like doesn't hit on you what you will do? Obvious answer: Hit on her. There you go.Made Nightwing wrote...

You could say his bi-curiousity is a result from stress, or maybe an "eff it all" attitude. Perhaps having Ashley "RAR RAR RAR!!" on Horizon pushed him over the edge.

Stress... made him bi. What!?
If you don't want him to be gay/bi then just don't play him as gay/bi! You don't need to make up some bizzare 'excuse' for a gay male Shepard - just because the option to be gay is now there doesn't mean its an option your Shepard would want to take.
Sheesh... my FemShep had the option to go after Liara and didn't, but the option being there for me to choose didn't automaticlly make my FemShep bisexual!

A. Romances are player-initiated and fully optional.
B. If someone does hit on your Shep, decline. Take it in stride as the compliment it is, or seize the opportunity to reaffirm your heterosexuality. Either way works.

I don't think the straight fanbase has been forgotten. To repeat myself, I am entirely neutral on the matter. Toggle or no toggle, I don't particularly care. Some gamers want it, I don't object to letting them have it. If someone's particular view of a character is that they're straight and always been straight, or gay, and always been gay, fine. Let 'em have that option, it doesn't bother me.
