. I'm used to thinking that elves are immortal, glorious, supremely beautiful as Tolkien described them. So Zevran (and all the others 'expert at pauverty and slavery) is quite the letdown.

That fact was actually a plus for me, as, like in the Witcher, it shows elves differently as we normally expect them to be.
The same could be said of the Dwarves (closer to Dragonlance dwarves, perhaps, than Tolkien's?).

Alistair > Leliana > Morrigan. Haven't tried Zevhran. That's from the perspective of how well done the romances (dialogue and involvement) are. As a character, Leliana is my favourite.

I enjoyed both the Morrigan and Leliana romance plots. I'm going to have to say though that even my sacrilegious, reckless human noble found it very hard to break it off officially with Leliana, no matter how different their views are. Good show Bioware, I actually felt pretty bad after doing that.

Physically, I'd say Leliana is more attractive. In the end though, I'l have to go with Morrigan as my favorite, if only because of her voice. I swear, Claudia Black could make my finance textbook sound hot.

I considered for a moment leaving my husband for Alistair...then I remembered it was a game.

I've romanced him twice now even when I had the intention of NOT romancing him.  I JUST CAN'T HELP IT!

I've also started a thing with Zevran and I'm enjoying it immensely (making sure to leave Alistair at camp as much as possible).

Sort of accidently romanced Leliana - and found her adorable.  Felt bad when I had to hurt her feelings.  I THOUGHT WE WERE JUST BEST GIRLFRIENDS!  Sorry sweetie.

I started the game thoroughly intending to hook up with the elven assassin, and ended up falling for Alistair. His sense of humor is AMAZING, and he's quite the cutie to boot.

My boyfriend has a sense of humor like his, though, and he reminds me of him at a few points. So that could be part of it as well.

I am making another character who WILL try out Zevran this time. Really!

My human noble has a secret celeb-crush on Bann Teagan. SHHHH! don't tell alistair! I LOVED that you could actually flirt with him, it was sweet, him being all proper and cute...

*sigh* Teagan *swoon*

Full agree. It may be his voice actor - even a good joke without a decent voice is a bore - but he is so hilarious. Especially when I decided to go out and try his humor. (The one with the dogs...) Great job here, Steve Valentine and every single writer at BioWare.

Leliana is nice, too, but I haven't any tick for shoes or hair or something like that - I might have fallen for her, though, if she had looked more like the Sacred Ashes movie character. Image IPB

Alistair, no contest. That's also from the pespective of a straight guy.

Leilana is alright, but I had a relationship with somebody somewhat similar to her and let's just say it ended bad, so maybe I'm biased on that.

Morrigan is meh.

I'm definitely in the Zevran camp. He was the perfect companion for my Dalish rogue, and while his strength is hidden, it is sooo much deeper than Alistair's. It's hard not to think you can do anything with Zev at your side. Happy endings FTW!

This time through I'm trying Alistair with a human noble, and I'm having a hard time even wanting to play. I don't think Alistair wants a girlfriend, I think he wants a mother.

Next time will be with a male character who just wants to experience it all and not settle down with anyone. We'll see what happens.

1) Morrigan. Nothing like a woman who knows what she wants, and be it a godbaby.

2) Zevran. Hedonist with no aspirations beyond that. Not necessarily for me, but I can get behind him being dependable in that way.

3) Leiliana. Bonus points for being a redhead, but the accent coupled with the occasional lithp and the fact that she's a megalomaniac religious extremist are rather off-putting.

4) Alistair. Ye Gods, I don't know where to begin. He's stupid, he's a crybaby, he's been letting others push him around for most of his life and has no interest in seeing that change... except for the one time where you'd actually want him to crawl into a hole and cry himself to sleep and not interfere with me trying to save the world. If given the option, I'd rather romance Sandal instead.

My favourite romance is Alistair. But if I can romance with Shale, I bet that would be my first choice.

Can any male human noble who married Anora comment on it? Does it actually count as a "romance", or is it more of a "this will be beneficial to our mutual political power" arrangement?

It doesn't feel just like a mutually beneficial arrangement, but that might depend on whether you use dialogue options to place yourself as her next husband as opposed to the next king. I would like to see it expanded in a DLC at some point.

Alistair and Zervan, so both are my favorite.  B)

Romancing Alistiar is like romancing a kight. He is loyal to you, very sincere, and you are his first love, too!

Zervan is easy to go to bed with, but if you want him to love you, you need to first show him what love is.

Its just me or all romance plot in DA:O require the PC to be a psychiatrist?

Seconded! With vehemence!! I specifically started my second playthrough as a human noble so that I could romance her. I'm not yet to that point in the game yet, but I think she's an interesting character as well. I would say she's a smarter, more emotionally mature Morrigan (parental/trust issues, anyone?) waiting to be given some real screen-time. I wouldn't want her in my party per se, but in some ways she's stronger than your party NPC's.

As far as the standard party romances?

1. Morrigan (I dig the bad girls, baby)
2. Leliana (Redheads ftw! But I prefer my love life with a separation of church and mate, as it were)
3. Alistair (The man is funny, which is good. And kind of a dimwit, which is better... "Why of course, dear! You go bash something with your shield while I run Ferelden..." It's good to be Queen.)
4. Zevran (He's all about the nookie, eventually gets real about it. But Zev just didn't do it for me. Straight man talking, though, so take that for what it's worth.)
1.5 Anora (It's better to be KING.)

That said, I fell hard for Morrigan in my first run, and ever since all others pale in comparison. Claudia Black took good writing and made it great. She's head and shoulders above the rest. Plus I have this weird hang-up where the FIRST time I play any RPG feels more "real". Subsequent plays have less impact, sadly.

I'm curious, does anyone else feel that way? Where your first run in the game is somehow more "canon" emotionally? Not to say that I've enjoyed subsequent plays any less, but they definitely lose impact as the surprises fade.

**As a point of reference, yes I am only on my second playthrough, but my wife has been playing simultaneously so I got to witness the Alistair & Zevran romances as well. I'm on PC; the wife is on X360. We are SUCH a gamer geek family.

Leiliana slightly ahead of Zevran.

Leiliana is just so sweet, and Zevran, as Tielis said, is someone you feel like you could do anything with, and have great adventures. Perfect companion for someone like most of my characters, who expect to continue to live adventurous lives afterwards.

This doesn't seem bad to me, so much as the fact that it's all one way.

It would have been nice if at least one romance option would've said something like, "Wow, being framed by your brother and cast into exile as a kinslayer must've been rough!" Or to a human noble, "So, how are you dealing with your entire family being slaughtered by Arl Howe?" Or even the more generic, "Do you ever feel like your quest to stop the Blight isn't giving you enough time to take care of yourself?" (I do recall Alistair, even as a non-romance option, remarking that he's been too self-absorbed and you haven't had an easy time of it, either.)

Being the PC I suppose means that are the most capable and stable person around, or at least regarded as such by everyone else.

Burdeon of leadership, as I interpret it. The leader can't show (severe) weakness or emotional trauma. The way I see it, they feel they can confide and talk to you because you're all serene and apparently calm and collected or at least not (like my city elf was under the surface) a borderline/outright manic-depressive'd basket case. So like a swan: the very image of calm and serene, and paddling furiously underneath. I agree with romances you should really get an option to basically say to your interest 'God I feel like I'm over my head.' though Wynn's dialogues are to a large extent like that.

Anther way to look at it is: a leader won't be followed if they panic with their men. They need to be leaders at all times and can't show weakness. Sorta like the Chains of Commanding  trope frm tvtropes.org Alternatives might be the Stepford Smiler trope or The Woman Wearing The Queenly Mask (for both genders of course this time) trope.

I agree it makes sense to express only grim-faced determination and the occasional gallows humor to inspire leadership in most companions, but it would be nice to be able to confide in your romance option (or someone) that it's not always as easy as you make it look. Part of what makes a relationship intimate is that you would share with that person things you wouldn't share with anyone else, besides just your tent. (Although I suppose it would be out-of-character to expect this kind of consolation from Morrigan.)

You're right that Wynne's dialogue does point to this, as she's clearly taking on a mentor role. Which made sense to me when I did Circle tower first on my mage origin, but when I did circle tower close to the end on my dwarf I told her to sod off. (Ah, roleplaying...)

Leliana for elf or dwarf... Alistair for female noble story (if you take Alistair's romance as a non human it is a major kick in the guts... he is a gutless weakling unable to take a stand... discarding you because he lacks the courage to rock the boat of the human noble's racial bigotry). Morrigan, well if it wasn't for the save your life option at the end, I would rather drive my sword through her manipulative cold heart. Mostly I thought the romances lacked story hooks and dramatic impact, specially when you are taken prisoner (but that entire quest lacked impact). I think they missed a golden opportunity to bring a lot of drama (and more moving moments) to DAO from the romance and racial sub stories. I still love the story dearly and I would love to see DLC expanding on the possible existing romance options in the game... which gives them more depth and emotion... not a mod, I'm just not into amateur hour.

Leliana gets my vote.

She is a good example of how wrong my first impressions can sometimes be. Before DA was released I expected to hate her as I usually can't stand religious zealotry even in game characters. Instead, the opposite occurred.

She was in my opinion, the kindest party member; more so than Wynne or Alistair even. She also has some of the more humorous banter in DA. It isn't as constant or as blatant as what I see out of Alistair, Shale, Oghren or Sten, but funny nontheless.

Leliana comes across as genuinely sweet and feminine, and deftly manages to avoid becoming a running cliché. That's something only the most complex characters tend to manage, even in BioWare games. Considering she's a second string NPC that's impressive. It's rare to see a supporting party member with the depth of a co-star, and I feel Leliana is at least on par with Alistair and Morrigan in depth. In terms of sheer interaction and input while questing, I feel she may even exceed them at times.

The romance track itself is bit straightforward, but I still enjoyed it immensely. There's some very amusing banter there, and the flirtatious options vary from funny and cute to borderline ribald on a few brief occasions. Those brief moments still maintained a sense of subtlety though and never came across as crass.

There are also several endearing moments. The scene with Leliana's pet nug... Her tragic tale of two lovers that became stars... and of course, the song she sings you.

If I had to sum up my feelings on Leliana's romance track in a single sentence I would probably describe it as "Dragon Age's most romantic romance" because it was touching, intriguing, and cute almost from the onset; yet it managed to maintain that quality throughout.

I believe it was Sheryl Chee who wrote it? Well, I have to thank her for brightening up my DA experience considerably through her writing. Leliana is now unquestionably my favorite BioWare romance to date, and the character herself has earned a permanent spot in my short list of favorite CRPG characters. I don't forsee this changing anytime soon.

On a related note, whoever cast Corinne Kempa made a good choice. Her voice fit the character's personality and dialogue perfectly.

It's Anora we're talking about. She's probably nearly as emotionnally stunted as Morrigan, with twice the ego and pretentiousness, and uptight rather than carnal.
She has not had a children in five years while married to a young man. That probably tells about what kind of romance she is :P

I've only had Leliana and Zevran so far, still don't know how I managed to avoid getting into a fight over that..

But out of those two I've really enjoyed Zevran's romance before. Maybe it was because it was almost kind of cute and sweet how it brought out a side to my PC that I hadn't thought of that point, and it was also pretty fun. I felt worse for him than exactly for Leliana after my PC sacrificed himself. :( Poor Zev

Yeah. I know what you mean. I had a similar 'problem' when playing through Mass Effect again w/ a different character, and even w/ that same character but using different options (trying to get that 'optimal' shepard w/out spending points on charm/intimidate). I think this is also the reason why I was never able to finish a second playthrough of the Witcher. *shrugs*
