I don't have many playthroughs so far, but every single 'romance' in the ME series that I've tried so far goes like this:

1. Do mission
2. Talk
2. Talk
4. P*ssy/dick!

"Hey X squadmate, how is it going."
"Oh, its fine and *stutter*... uh... dandy."
"Did you stutter?"
"YES BECAUSE I HAVE FEELINGS FOR YOU AND WANT TO HAVE SEX RIGHT NOW."
"K. See you in 10."

Not suggesting that there shouldn't be any crew members quivering over the thought of you, but some of the relationships are purely professional. And there is always the problem of past love. Thane should have needed more 'effort', IMO. Zaeed is in love with a gun. Kasumi is in love with a dead boyfriend. Getting past that barrier should be more then...

1. Do mission
2. Talk
3. Talk
4. P*ssy/dick!

Well, how are you going to start the relationship other than talking?

Yeah let's do this:

1) All characters have preferences for appearance. They compare sliders of your character to their preferences.
2) They like specific classes.
3) They like specific paragon and renegade difference.
4) They look at how you act during missions.

People who need to use inappropriate slang terms for body parts and to describe sex are intelluctually challenged and this post should be removed.

Well, let's take Tali for example.

Basically the very moment you suggest that you feel something for her, she's already melted. This would make sense for her character I suppose, but every LI in the game? You need to basically say "Hey, lets talk" 3-4 times, wait for the Omega 4 relay, and you're good to go.

Because I'm obsessed, let's take Kasumi for example. She is still coping, Keiji's greybox or not. You wouldn't talk to her 3 times for "allegiance". You would say, buy her Ramen recipe from the Citadel. Do it again later, but bring a movie this time. Then she finally admits that she no longer needs the greybox anymore, ever since you started showing every night. Blah blah blah.

This is an internet forum, not Biology class.

Of all the things you could be offended by, why this? I hear it 100 times a day at my brain dead, school, just usually not in a sarcastic fashion, as shown here.

Just be glad I'm putting effort into grammar.

I could dig that....basically romance her, not just the current...chat, chat, jump in the sack.

well how do you expect them to do it in the limited time the game will take the player to complete? so like, before we hit the Omega-4 relay maybe Tali's all like "hey uhhh... Shepard ... uhhh..." ???

I'd definitely want better friendship paths though, ME2 was completely borked when it came to that.

"hey Shep i kinda think you're hawt"
"nah gtfo"
"oh ok"

---

"hey wanna talk"
"can it wait for a bit ..."

you get the idea :P

A simpler way is to create more choices on the dialogue wheel when doing romance to make it easier in the conversational tree to screw up and kill the romance by saying the wrong things. Kind of like Samara's loyalty mission, where you're talking to Morinth, except more complex than that.

Something I never got.

If you don't want to bed them, then you obviously aren't worth talking to? Are your calibrations really that important, can't we just have a brochat?

Don't see anything wrong with some 'fetching' and creative thinking for some of the tougher romances.

You do realize that system is nothing but
Do Mission
Talk
Talk
Sex

Right? The simple fact of the matter is, that's how relationships are, you talk and then it leads to the romance. The only thing you offered different is subject of conversation. Instead of talking about the weather, they talk about how much in love with their dead boyfriend they are, but all in all, its the same thing, its no more or less difficult. Even the above posters suggestion about having them being like the conversation with Morinth, wouldn't make them anymore difficult.

Because if they player wants to romance Ashley, their going to romance Ashley and there's no stopping them. BW can attempt to make it tedious by making them reload six times to say the right things, but the result will be the same, so there is no benefit to doing so. At the end of the day, these romances are strictly controlled by the player, so if they make it a puzzle where, you can get it wrong; the player will simply go back and get it right. You already see that in DA2, with Isabela, some people say what they think she wants to hear and then find out its wrong and go back and say, what your suppose to say. So they might as well make it simple and keep it from being distracting.

That made me lol pretty hard, because it's completely true. My Shep just wanted a friendly chat, but nobody would give her the time of day. <_<

I see your point, but there needs to be more of a middle ground between making the romance and easy "win" and forming it into a dialouge quiz. You should definitely show interest and devotion to your lover; however, saying the "wrong thing" and killing the romance can only reveal a shallow and fragile connection. I feel that you could say the "wrong thing", even possibly have a totally embarrassing moment in front of him/her, and still be able to restore the romance from a strong friendship.

Though, this aspiration probably surpasses any program's ability.
Then again, I don't program games, so I woudn't know :P

I always wonder why there is no character that gets horny over a Regen. In ME1 you could get a character any way but in ME2 if you don't pick mostly Paragon then the relationship is pretty much screwed. I would like at least one character in ME3 to be put off by a paragon and only want to start a relationship with a Regenade.

Even if you're being somewhat flippant (difficult to tell), 3 & 4 are good ideas that should be implemented at least to a certain extent.  Look at how DA2 altered the relationship between Hawke and co. depending on the players decisions.  It may not have taken many nuances of player behavior into account, but it still "rewarded" players for being consistent regardless of their play style.  Even decisions that end the romance (besides just the broken hearts) such as helping Torpor reinforce or develop the personality of the love interest in question

Most of those renegade lines don't give you any points for picking them, in ME1 or ME2 (though some do).  In ME1 renegade when talking with squadmates often meant Shepard would get irrationally angry and upset (GRR don't study me, you're a freak!  Poetry is for losers and religion sucks, but I'm still talking to you cause I just like to be an angry jerk. ), other times approving of ruthless behavior, or even flirtatious.  Even using the paraphrases as a cue, it can be difficult to tell what Shepard is going to say and the manner in which he/she is going to say it in.  I've found it is best to just pick what looks most appropriate to a given Shepard, and reload to try different responses if it wasn't to my liking.

Anyways what I was gonna say before sidetracking myself is that many of the "renegade" responses (especially so in ME1, maybe a line here or there in ME2)  essentially consist of Shepard saying I hate everything about you, and I can barely stand to have you on my ship.  Maybe it's just me, but such behavior ought to preclude any chance of romance or friendship.  ME2 is much better in this regard, with Shepard mostly just taking on a slightly different attitude and demeanor (than the paragon alternative) rather than being an in-your-face ****.
