Have any of you out there introduced your significant other to the Mass Effect series? My girlfriend recently expressed an interest in seeing it and I'm not sure how to show her, especially seeing as she's a nongamer.

Anyone have any fun stories or suggestions?

Yeah I tried... failed horribly... she even yelled at me calling me a pusher. Oh well. *shrug*

If the movie is ever released I just drag her kicking and screaming to that. She dragged me to Time Trvelers Wife.

EDIT: First!

Just let her start a new profile and be her co-pilot for the first hour.

My husband finally finished his first ME1 playthrough not too long ago, took him awhile to get into it due to how slow things feel early on in the game (not much action on the Citadel for the first couple hours) but once he got out into the galaxy and especially once he got around to Virmire he was sucked in. Playing renegade also helped him feel fairly badass.

For ladies, I'd recommned letting her toy with character creation and get her talking to the squad-mates. Hubby wasn't so interested in all that, he just wanted to get on with shooting things. But that's the difference between male and female gamers, plus all gamers (and non-gamers) will approach games differently based on what interests them most.

I actually introduced my MOM of all people to this game. In her 50s, hates video games in general, but loves Mass Effect 2. I have to play all the shooty parts for her, but she enjoys making all the choices. Has her own character and everything.

For real. It's like they only exist on the internet.

Where else would we be? Outside? No, we're too busy gaming to not be plugged in all the time.

They sure as hell aren't at work, at school, at the airport, in the neighborhood, or at the soup kitchen.

All the gamer girls I know pretty much like a) zombie games or B) fantasy

Mine loves Star Wars, Avatar.... shes a big reader and even plays League of Legends with me... I showed her the ME gameplay and she wasnt into it. And shes a hottie... I think I am keeping her.

To each his own.

Plus her younger sister is a Trekkie... also pretty. I make fun of her for being a Trekkie... Its an obligation since I am a Wars fan. I use to be able to name every species of intelligent creatures at the age of 12 from the Star Wars universe. DONT JUDGE ME! Posted Image

I think getting dumped by a pixelated, virtual, asian thief would be the ultimate insult anyway.

Let me finish ME3 first so I can go gold digging in Japan or something.

Well, does a girl who is a friend count? Because if it does, I have. She's already an avid PS3 gamer, but hadn't tried ME. That's until we met, and I talked to her about it. She bought ME2 and got hooked. That was on July, and she already pre-ordered ME3. She's a hottie too. Also, if it counts, my sister also loves ME. She saw me playing ME1 a couple years ago and shrugged it off as another boring game. Twas' until she saw the dialogue wheel that she got interested. She already has leveled two FemSheps to 60 in ME1.

edit: My mother says Sheploo is hot.

Yes. She's very much a fan of Mass effect though she only watches me play and only likes the first game.  I was surprised by her once while playing me2, she asked a few questions about it. As I tried to explain the storyline to her she said "That's stupid. I like the first game better." and left the room.

My boyfriend and I are both gamers and we had both played ME1 and ME2 before we hooked up, though we'd known each other since before ME2's release. So I didn't really have to introduce him to the series.

The only games that I play with my gf are the guitar hero series... She just doesn't like games so much.

I don't have a lover.. At least not at the moment. Previous one wasn't interested in gaming at all (well, except for the odd sports game). I did manage to convince my dad to play ME and DAO however.

Show her the character creation screen and give her a few pointers while leaving the game on a lower difficulty, then sit back and keep quiet while she plays. You can talk about the game itself, a favorite scene, ask her what she thinks however be absolutely certain to avoid telling her too much how to play the game. This often frustrates non gamers because they want to complete it themselves. You can offer advice but try to word so you are asking if she wants it, not telling her outright. Otherwise, you are just the cheerleader. :P

On the topic at hand, since I am not presently dating, no. I will talk a future girlfriend into trying it if she hasn't already though.

Good luck to ya!

We can celebrate your success by spilling some drinks on the Citadel.

Yes, this was necessary. :D

My fiancee is somehow coordinated enough to play Madden, or Tiger Woods, but is not good at shooters at all.  Everytime he sees me typing on these boards, he gasps and whispers "Mass Effect, ZOHMYGAWD!".  I just kind of smile and he rolls his eyes and goes on with life.  Then again, I read a lot of science fiction and fantasy, and he likes James Patterson kind of books, so.

I date a jock, but he accepts my nerdy, geeky side.  I'm blessed that way, I guess.

And anyways, hot gamer men are hard to come across.  And the few I've dated just end up being heartbreaking jerks.  :(
