A quick forum search of "resolution" led me to this thread. It's the most recent of the search results. I would like to share my quest for an improved resolution, should it be of any assistance to someone thinking along the same lines as I in the desire for a better resolution.
I have been through a handful of installation and resolution options this past week. First of all I tried Baldur's Gate (vanilla) with the widescreen and GUI mods. It worked quite well but for a few graphical anomalies. I grew tired of having to open and close either the journal or inventory to cease these anomalies when they appeared. I decided to give EasyTutu a spin, as a result. I found it difficult to accept the updated character models and armor designs. Most of all the addition of kits, updated weapon proficiences, and an altered monster spawn system saw EasyTutu sent to the recycle bin. I returned to Baldur's Gate (vanilla) with the widescreen and GUI mods. I accepted the odd graphical anomaly for the sake of an improved resolution. It was then that I became suddenly aware of the problem where the camera shifts drastically everytime dialogue occurs, and then shifts back to its original placement, just as abruptly, when the dialogue has ended. That proved to be another deal breaker. I abandoned the quest for a modern resolution.
I found myself back with Baldur's Gate, minus all modifications, looking solely to sharpen up the image and reduce ratio distortion. I now turned to my NVIDIA Control Panel. I started experimenting with (older) resolutions as well as desktop sizes and desktop positioning. I added 640x480 (16-bit) as a resolution. I choose to run it with an aspect-ratio scaled by the GPU. It displayed the game unstretched and crisp, as opposed to stretched and distorted.
Honestly. I wish I had not wasted my time. The display on my 21.5 inch widescreen monitor running at 1920x1080, when the game is played fullscreen, is not a whole lot different in terms of quality and ratio to that of the 640x480 resolution which I added. It's similar, but not the same. The difference is there, just minor. Is it an improvement? Probably. I'd say it's a preference of taste. It did take seeing both screens side by side to realise this, though.
I'm most likely going to play Baldur's Gate in the default fullscreen display if not the 640x480 aspect ratio. EasyTutu distorts the Baldur's Gate experience too much for me. The widescreen mod as a stand alone program displaces the GUI. The GUI mod when added brings graphical anomalies along with it. The latter two as a tandem suffer from a dialogue induced camera problem. All in all I have wasted countless hours that could have been spent playing the game in the default display which (on my monitor at the least) is entirely playable.
Unless your monitor cannot scale the image correctly, I would recommend simply getting on with enjoying the game. It's all about the encounters, the story and the journey. Higher resolutions are impressive, but visuals never stand the test of time so don't put too much stock into them. I wish I hadn't!
