I saw a lot of screen shots of people playing on the default setting. Surprised me since I thought a lot of people on the board would be using the widescreen mod for some reason. What resolution do you play at? I'm trying at 1024X769 , but might go back down to default since it seems easier to read and see. Thanks

Edit: My apologizes, I didn't read correctly and this should be on the Baldurs Gate 2 section.

1280x1024. Unfortunately the BG2 rendering engine scales rather badly (performance-wise) to large resolutions, so that basically maxes CPU out at 100%. I'm playing in a virtual machine, so that adds some overhead.

In the basic resolution of my monitor: 1440x900, luckily my monitor is the more moderate 16:10 widescreen and doesn't have a resolution that's too high. I consciously looked for that when buying a new one a few years ago. Right now it would be harder to find.

My monitor's native 1680x1050. I tried lower resolutions using the widescreen mod but the image is stretched or is flanked by distracting borders.

I tried to use the widescreen mod, but playing the game at 1680x1050 hurt my eyes so I switched it to 800x600 windowed.

It is eye straining. The first time I tried 1680x1050 I kept instinctively rolling my mouse's wheel to zoom in; only to remember BG2 had no zoom feature. :P It took me awhile to get used to the fog of war bubble too. Eventually I adapted. I should give windowed mode a try--not that I expect to enjoy it. 800x600 will probably result in a tiny box based on my experience with other windowed games at that resolution.

It's really eye straining! I had to move really close and squint in order to read the dialogue and such. After 15 minutes I uninstalled the widescreen mod and switched it to 800x600.

I think the only trouble I really had was getting used to moving my cursor to the edge of my monitor instead of the actual window of BG in order to move the camera around. That is kind of annoying considering how small the window is compared to the size of my monitor but I got used to it too. I do prefer playing older games like BG at their native resolution though. The stretching and borders bother me too much.

My monitor is 1680x1050 but I'm playing in the original resolution, using the monitor function to change the picture format to 4:3 instead of widescreen.

1440x900, even though my monitor does 1920x1200. Any higher and the world just seems too tiny, in my opinion. Definitely prefer the widescreen though, more space to see the environment.

800x600, though I frequently turn off the interface panels to see more of the map, so maybe I should change that . . .

I'm playing on my laptop right now so am using 1366x768.

Still found the text size too small though, so used this mod to increase the text size: http://www.shsforums...other-ie-games/

It's a Godsend for the widescreen mod. :)

I simply renamed the middle-sized text to normal and used that one. Works like a charm. The text in too big to fit in a few places, like some items in the shop and the strength if you have 18/xx, but other than that it's GREAT.

I play at 1280x720 on my 1080p 27" monitor. It's small....but not TOO small because my monitor is big enough to compensate.

I use 1776x1000, widescreen mod, playing on an 82' DLP television.

Widescreen screwed me over a bit, the windows were stuck to one side of the screen and though I like seeing more map, the buttons were all really small. In the end I just went back to the highest default. I think atm I am playing GemRB in 600x800. Go figure.

I use the widescreen mod at 1680x1050. It strains the eyes a bit, though.

A quick forum search of "resolution" led me to this thread.   It's the most recent of the search results.   I would like to share my quest for an improved resolution, should it be of any assistance to someone thinking along the same lines as I in the desire for a better resolution.

I have been through a handful of installation and resolution options this past week.   First of all I tried Baldur's Gate (vanilla) with the widescreen and GUI mods.   It worked quite well but for a few graphical anomalies.   I grew tired of having to open and close either the journal or inventory to cease these anomalies when they appeared.   I decided to give EasyTutu a spin, as a result.   I found it difficult to accept the updated character models and armor designs.   Most of all the addition of kits, updated weapon proficiences, and an altered monster spawn system saw EasyTutu sent to the recycle bin.   I returned to Baldur's Gate (vanilla) with the widescreen and GUI mods.   I accepted the odd graphical anomaly for the sake of an improved resolution.   It was then that I became suddenly aware of the problem where the camera shifts drastically everytime dialogue occurs, and then shifts back to its original placement, just as abruptly, when the dialogue has ended.   That proved to be another deal breaker.   I abandoned the quest for a modern resolution.

I found myself back with Baldur's Gate, minus all modifications, looking solely to sharpen up the image and reduce ratio distortion.   I now turned to my NVIDIA Control Panel.   I started experimenting with (older) resolutions as well as desktop sizes and desktop positioning.   I added 640x480 (16-bit) as a resolution.   I choose to run it with an aspect-ratio scaled by the GPU.   It displayed the game unstretched and crisp, as opposed to stretched and distorted.

Honestly.   I wish I had not wasted my time.   The display on my 21.5 inch widescreen monitor running at 1920x1080, when the game is played fullscreen, is not a whole lot different in terms of quality and ratio to that of the 640x480 resolution which I added.   It's similar, but not the same.   The difference is there, just minor.   Is it an improvement?   Probably.   I'd say it's a preference of taste.   It did take seeing both screens side by side to realise this, though.

I'm most likely going to play Baldur's Gate in the default fullscreen display if not the 640x480 aspect ratio.   EasyTutu distorts the Baldur's Gate experience too much for me.   The widescreen mod as a stand alone program displaces the GUI.   The GUI mod when added brings graphical anomalies along with it.   The latter two as a tandem suffer from a dialogue induced camera problem.   All in all I have wasted countless hours that could have been spent playing the game in the default display which (on my monitor at the least) is entirely playable.

Unless your monitor cannot scale the image correctly, I would recommend simply getting on with enjoying the game.   It's all about the encounters, the story and the journey.   Higher resolutions are impressive, but visuals never stand the test of time so don't put too much stock into them.   I wish I hadn't!

I'm running the game in a windows XP virtualbox running on linux. I'm using the unsupported 1024x768 resolution built into the vanilla engine. I had to drop the host linux resolution down to 1024x768 as well to get full screen, but it's all good now.

Now if only I could figure out how to get Deus Ex GOTY to run at 1024x768 as well ... stupid mouse goes berzerk when I try.
