I prefer rhythm guitarist because I connect with it more, but it is too subjective.
Acoustic guitarist Andy McKee is epic, you have to simply watch him play, plenty of videos on youtube, I've never seen anyone groove like him while playing incredibly complex yet peaceful music, it is a mind-boggling experience that can only induce smiling.
And Tosin Abasi is one of the most talented guitarist I've ever seen that can actually write music that isn't just incoherent wanking up the neck, like Michael Angelo Batio. Note he's just as good live in his band Animals as Leaders. He doesn't fail at awesomeness, he's a nice guy too.
Too lazy to link songs.

Guthrie Govan
Shawn was amazing, Grey Pianos Flying is lovely. Guthrie is just ridiculously talented, had the pleasure of meeting him a few years ago too. My favourites are Michael Hedges, Lindsey Buckingham, Stephen Housden, Steve Rothery, David Gilmour, Paul Gilbert... just to name a few.

^ Amen. I don't want this to turn into a "versus" thread - but I think if there's any guitarist in history who mastered every aspect of the instrument, Lane's the man. And Guthrie speaks really highly of him.

I tend not to follow specific musicians, however, the one artist who consistently blows my mind with his ability as a guitarist, singer, and producer is Devin Townsend. The man is a musical juggernaut...he has released so much excellent material, shows no sign of slowing down, and is continually evolving. He's really an amazing talent.
Ocean Machine - Night
Devin Townsend Band - Bad Devil
Devin Townsend Band - Deadhead
Strapping Young Lad - Detox
Strapping Young Lad - Wrong Side
Ziltoid the Omniscient - Hyperdrive
Devin Townsend Project - Ki

Here are two that are a bit more obscure: Sharon Isbin and Dick Dale.
They are both very talented and very different.
It probably bears repeating that I don't rank musicians. I just enjoy the music. On the other hand, when two greats go head to head in a jam session, that's the good stuff, that is.
One of the reasons jazz is so awesome are the sessions.

I tend to like particular songs as opposed to the individual musicians playing on them, which is bad, I know. But if I had to call out specific guitarists off the top of my head, I'd say:
Emily Saliers of Indigo Girls (the link is cued to a good solo, imo)
Nancy Wilson of Heart
Brian May of Queen (a relatively recent gig)
EDIT: Neglected to include Rodrigo y Gabriela

Impossible to tell, there are so many of them. Depends on the genre, among others, of course.
Off the top of my hat: Anders Segovia, Narciso Yepes, Julian Bream, John Williams, Paco de Lucia, John McLaughlin, Jeff Beck, Danny Gatton, Lee Ritenour, Larry Carlton, Joe Pass, Django Reinhardt, Jim Hall, Albert Lee, Albert King, Hubert Sumlin, Muddy Waters... Arlen Roth, Stevie Vai, Hendrix, Clapton, Rory Gallagher, Frank Marino, Dave Edmunds and the usual suspects...
