To be fair, picking out great guitarists is like taking a fat kid to a candy shop and telling him he can only have three pieces of candy. Too little time, too many choices and they're all different.

David Gilmour

Jeff Beck

Eric Clapton

Alex Lifeson

I feel ashamed not listing David Gilmour. To me, he's undoubtedly the most gifted guitarist I have ever seen. His style is so unique, that everything he does has the attention of my ears all of the time. I saw Pink Floyd when I was 12 years old when they had just started their Dark Side of the Moon tour. RIP Richard Wright

I don't know if it his best, but I certainly love that song. Pink Floyd is in my top 5 all time rock groups. I am glad to have grown up during the 70s, I saw some of the best concerts ever during that time. That all stopped when I saw 3 dead people on the ground during The Who concert in 1979.

That's his second-best, imo.

I'm also really fond of the outro to Sheep, and of course, the solos on Money and Time.

EDIT: Oh, and Echoes. The whole damn song.

In no specific order

David Gilmour

Jimmy ****ing Page

Jimi Hendrix this man could cover any song and make it his.
Eric Clapton.

George Harrison some people may not think he is the most amazing but his love of eastern culture and raga left him with such a unique style.

Word. It's tough to pick a favorite when everything he does is excellent.

Frank Brennan. I've never heard him play a bad riff. Such an interesting writer.

Good call those that have mentioned Les Paul and Dick Dale!

My personal favorite is Jerry Garcia...even if you're not into the Grateful Dead you have to acknowledge that he could play!

Jimi Hendrix...a lot of the sound associated with the electric guitar came from his ideas.

Santana...he plays like the Guitar is plugged directly into his mind...no seperation between what he's imagining and what he's doing!

Clapton, of course...but odddly not as much since he got himself straight.

As angryfrozenwater said, Zappa! He isn't really mentioned much when folks think of great guitar players, but he was able to play just about every type of instrument and was best at guitar.

Gilmore gets an Honorable Mention on my list. Just a hair short of an all-time Greatest (just my opinion)

Yowch. I grew up in the 90s so I haven't seen a great deal. I saw Fleetwood Mac and Deep Purple (with Ritchie Blackmore) when I was young, but that's it as far as the great classic stuff goes. Whitesnake still put on a great show though, and Roger Waters. His guitarist, Dave Kilminster, is as close to the man himself as you can get!

Dave Murray, Adrian Smith and Janick Gers, all of Iron Maiden

Tony Iommi of Sabbath

Yngwie Malmsteen

Joel. O Keefe of Airbourne

and I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Stevie Ray Vaughan yet. Not metal, but still a legend.
