So I finally did a playthrough where I fight Saren instead of him killing himself, leading directly into the fight with Sovereign/Saren.  I have to say, that fight is possibly one of the most annoying boss fights I’ve had in any game.  There’s no strategy to it, just “hit the moving target and avoid the frelling rockets”.  He just bobs back and forth most of the fight, making it longer than it really should have been.

Now, I’ve done many playthroughs on Hardcore, and for the most part, the game is easy.  I’ve beaten the annoying boss fight at the end with Sovereign/Saren with little trouble.  This playthrough, however, is much different.  Sovereign continuously targets my Shepard for all attacks except the rocket attacks.  What’s this mean?  I can’t use *any* of my skills, because once they get almost completely recharged, he’s stopped my skills from being used *again*.  When he does the rocket attack while against the wall, he aims at my part members that of course don’t know how to use cover whatsoever or move out of the way of the slow moving rockets.

So they die rather quickly, because they’re morons.  Then the fun part.  My main weapons, which are the top Spectre versions of those weapons (pistol and sniper rifle, since I’m an Infiltrator), barely scratch Sovereign.  The part that’s even more fun is that when I finally pick away at his shields (because it’s just me since he kills my party members when they revive and I don’t get access to medigel since he disables tech abilities before they recharge), they start recharging right away.  I’ve never had this much trouble, and I’m on my 7th or 8th playthrough, this being my 5th playthrough on Hardcore.

Have I forgotten how to beat Sovereign in merely a month since I beat him before?  Has anyone else encountered this problem before?

Actually master lift or bastion stasis is very effective in that fight.  Sounds like he's hitting you with damping.

I know he's hitting me with Damping. I'm just frelling sick of it! I haven't gone back to try again. As I said, never had an issue with him in any playthrough until now. The battle just seemed oddly more difficult than any other previously played.

The first fight with Saren is ridiculously difficult because he just won't stand still for more than a second; I played it through as an infiltrator and completely agree with you that the way that fight works is very difficult as one, because infiltrators depend on their enemies standing still so they can get a good shot at them!

The second fight can potentially be extremely easy, though. Take Liara and Kaidan (or Wrex if, you know, Kaidan's not available any more) and spam biotic powers. Every time one wears off, hit him with another one. If you've got any biotics as your bonus power, use that too.

Although I'm not sure how useful they are in the first fight... I dunno. I know I defeated him once on Hardcore as an infiltrator with Kaidan and Liara, but it's been a while and all I remember is how annoying it was that he wouldn't sit still.

What party members are you taking, and what skills do they have?

I usually take Liara and Garrus. Saren will use damping or sabotage, or whatever attack to overheat my current weapon and mess up my cooldowns. You will also need to be hitting him with overload to help drop his shields. But at that point you're squad should be able to use powers. Spam all their useful powers at him. I don't recall him messing up my powers much after that, probably because I am using damping and sabotage on him. Use your pistol and turn on marksman and shoot him, then switch to rifle and try assassinate...

Really you just have to be mobile and use your squad powers effectively as well as dodge the attacks.

For the Saren fight, there's not too much you can do besides spam the hell out of Overload and try to keep his shields down. Toxic attacks DO seem to help.

I personally brought Liara and Grunt for my Insanity fight. I was a Sentinel though, so I had Lift and Throw as well. Max Lift will keep him up in the air for plenty of time, then hit him with 3 consecutive max Throw hits, and if you have a pair of maxed out Medical Exoskeletons on Liara, then at that time her max Lift should be able to go again. I DID have some stupid powerful amp on her and myself though, that helped a bit with the cooldown.

If you don't have biotics yourself, Liara and Garrus would probably be your best bet. Make sure you have Garrus use Damping on him ASAP too, that certainly helps and gives you some breathing room to hurt him hard before he uses it on you. For the final sections and all boss fights in general, I decided to turn squad AI powers off, manual control for all of them. That was, Garrus doesn't go and waste Adrenaline Rush the instant the fight starts...

I finished this one just this morning; used the Spacbar (ie; Tac HUD) to Pause and resight the target. After all, Shepard is the Expert Marksman; not me.

But I did let Saren shoot himself, and now am glad to have that option; detest these kind of Boss fights.
