''People are messy, awkward, sometimes selfish or cruel. But they're trying. And I'm going to make sure they have a chance''

That more or less is why my Shep do and ofcourse my Shep got goals and being a victim of a genocide isn't that high on the list.

LOL...:D...For sure...chalk and cheese...^_^...I love how we both play Paragons (mostly similar dialogs and actions, etc...) but have managed to successfully and convincingly given them such alternate characters/motivations.

Here's an interesting question...If your Shep was a real person, do you think you would like him as a person and get along with him?

Funnily enough, I would actually have a soft spot for my Shep...I would razz and challenge him something shocking, no one belongs on a pedestal....but I would in fact find him endearing in his own way....despite his arrogence.

My cannon Sheaprd

John Shepard, Earthborn/Warhero, Paragon Soldier

Due to his Earthborn background, he grew up in very violent, harsh, and a somewhat hopeless enviorment before he has the chance to a better life by joining the Alliance. From that point on he decided that he would do whatever he could to make the galexy a better place so others would not have to live and suffer in conditions like those he and others endured during his childhood. He took up a very Whiteknight style view of the world, his motivation being to do what he could to help others, right wrongs, and otherwise do whatever he can to make the world a bit brighter.

That was before the events of Mass Effect 1. As he begain he mission to stop Saren and the Reaper's return his faith in all the "Whiteknight ideals' begain to be shaken as the world seemed to ignore his efforts. Almost everyoney refused to acknowlage the Reapers as a threat,  those who should have been heloing him, the Alliance and the Council, barely gave any aid, if that. The only ones who belived him were his crew, he throughout the events of ME1 he grew very close to. The battle of the Citadel came, Saren and Soverign were defeated, and the universe was saved from destruction at the present. Now it looked like the Alliance and the Council were finaly listening to him and would help stop the Reapers.  Things were finaly looking up.

Then he died. Waking up two years later he found the galexy has changed in his absence. He had been brought back to life by Cerberus, a organization he saw as evil and a threat to the safety of the galexy. After his death everyone had done their best to forget what had happened and ignore everything he acomplished. Desipite his efforts he had not made a lasting effect on the universe, everything was just as dark as it had always been.

To quote TV tropes, Shepard had devoted his life to ideals such as truth and justice; but the world had continuously let him down. He continued to try to protect the innocent and right wrongs as he set out to stop the collectors, but now with little confidence that he could ever really change things, but still trying since it was the right things to do. Now having the Knight in Sour Armor persona (and going from Paragon to Paragade), deep down he still had the sliver of hope.

He could have fallen further after seeing how some of those that followed him before  turn against him like how Ashely
called him a traitor when he met her on Herizon. Or how he saw  how Liara (his former LI)had become absorbed by revenge as a result of his
death. The only thing that stopped him from losing what was left of his faith that there was good in the world were his friends who had still trusted him were Joker, Garrus, and
Tali, who  had stood by him even after all that had happened. He then came to develope a relationship with Tali, as she had been one of those followed him through whatever happened, and someone who he found he could talk to and confide in beyond the others in his team. The collectors were then defeated, and everyone made it out alive, and now the preperation to fight the Reapers could begin.

After all that has happened, Shepards motivation is Threefold. One is to fight for his friends, those who he trust and he would go to hell and back for and that he knows would do the same for him. Two is to fight for Tali, to give her a home on the Quarian homeworld. The third is this...

...Even if the universe is saved it is likely that it will continue to be a dark place. People suffer and die, the weak and helpless are preyed uipon by the strong, and good rarely wins out in the end. But people are trying, trying to make then world better just as Shepard has been. Maybe they won't succeed and the world is doomed even if the Reapers are stopped; but there is still a chance things will get better. If the Reapers win, there is not chance, no hope; Separd motivation is to fight to give the Universe that hope. the be able to try and hope to make the unvierse a better place.

I'll use my original Shep
Charlie had two options as girl. Military life or jail. Enlisted to get as faaaaar away from Earth as possible. Got wired with an L3 implant and the rest is history

She's actually quite the paragon..but had a complete Huck Finn personality... loves to roam wherever, whenever and bristles at too much authority

Okay, I really liked TheWerdna's detail and story of how Shepard changed as mass effect proceeded.

I'm going to try something like that for my Cannon Shepard.

Shepard was born and raised on Mindoir typically was a good kid with an idealistic view of the world growing up. When slavers attacked the colony and he watched the streets and house raided, and people dragged out and taken away, knowing his family was out somewhere in there, he started to see a dark side to life, and started to categories people, the good, and the evil.

He joined the alliance to ensure that the good would not suffer like he did, to ensure a better place. Quickly gaining renown for his natural affinity for leadership and remarkably tactical mind. When the Thresher Maws attacked, they struck about twenty of his men first, he saw the time to retreat, but he choose to save and ordered an extraction tactic. The beasts overpowered his unit, leaving Shepard as the final survivor.

Finally about a year before the events of the first game, the Batarian Terrorists struck Terra Nova, Shepard and a small squad prevented the attack and finally Shepard was confronted with weather to save the hostages or stop Balak, He opted to stop Balak, pushing him to the point of submission when Shepard finally saw the result he wanted from a major event in his life, and made sure Balak was dead before he left. The evil shall be removed, even at the cost of a small group of good, so that the many may survive.

Shepard never forgot those who had died on Akuse and any who he lost under his command he takes as a personal failure (Jenkins), he's motive at this point is still pure, to save as many innocents as possible, but he will make sacrifices to do so. Through mass effect he killed Shiala and would not let any of the Salarians out at Sarens base, not matter how innocent they seemed, also very readily pulled a trigger on Benezia when the time came (which I like to at least pretend Liara is not so weirdly okay with), would not allow the Rachni, who threatened the entire galaxy, to return, as even if the queen was sincere, whatever happened last time could occure again, and helped Garrus kill dr. Salion.

He even goes off at Wrex, not for killing fist, but for making the move before Shepard had told him to.

At the same time, he saved the Colonists on Feros, the people stranded on Noveria and even managed to work up enough trust with Liara to allow her to join his crew, despite her connection to Benezia.

He also did not begrudge the council for their skepticism about the Reapers, as he understood the position they were in, though it did not stop him from trying to change their minds. And although still a distrust for Batarians lingered, he never once had a second thought about allowing a Turian, Krogan, Quarian and Asari onto his team.

Romanced Ashley due to a common military ethic and interest in poetic literature, despite their disagreements about aliens, which she eventually came 'round on.

Once on Virmire he was forced to choose between Kaidan and Ashley, he knew straight away that he had lost someone but he didn't want to loose both. He saw the geth force going back to the bomb, and concluded, 'we can't get back there on time.'

So he told Joker to go to the top of the tower, and leave Ashley to die, shedding a tear as he does so. And as he flies away afterwards he looks at her vital signs, and sees that she's still alive, just before the blast. (In my head I sometimes think that Saren should kill Kaidan as well, just to rub it in Shepards face that he made the wrong choice.)

This is now the point in the series where the diolog wheel goes through it's greatest failure, Shepard has to be level headed about what happened on Virmire, but I don't want that, this should be the point where Shepard is down and he needs his squad to pick him up and keep him going. (Ashley's dead so he misses out of the slump scene), still that's exactly what he needs.

And now, when he presents to the council his discovery of a Reaper that they still do not accept, he finally starts getting pissed off at them (I like the scene "I believe you humans have a saying, even a broken clock is right twice a day" "Here's another one, go to hell!" because it shows Shepard lashing out irrationally under the stress) Then he gets the call about Talitha, another survivor from Mindoir, and while he's grounded, he wants to do something good so he helps, and manages to calm her down.

And when he did this, he finally realised, how he just did something right, without any 'bad people' being involved, and he started to finally see the grey in the world, sometimes people just aren't what the initially seem.

And then at the very end, Saren confronted Shepard and explained his motive, and Shepard saw what Saren was, a man who was trying to save as many lives as he could and was willing to make the rough choices on the way. Shepard was looking at what he could become, if one day he went too far. After Saren died, Shepard had a thought 'I want to make sure everyone knows, Saren tried to save them.'

When he then had to choose between the council and attacking Sovereign directly, Shepard felt something new, uncertainty. 'If I let the council die and we have the time to save them, then they died for nothing.' after listening to his squad cast their thoughts. 'I can't just let someone die..can I, I've done it before but I don't want to be Saren but if I save them and we don't have time...the entire galaxy is dead!' so he made he's judgement, to save lives and told the fleet to let the council die.

In Mass Effect 2, when Khalisah Al Jilani talks about this, Shepard says the council are hero's.

I think that's already too long so I'll leave it at that. If you got this far, thanks for reading.
