I don't see how a story-driven MMO can work anyway.

And why not? They've made Starcraft 2 and are making Diablo 3.

Why? Because WoW is continuing the story there is no need. There are two more planned expansions that have been revealed until then there is no point in wishing for it.
Starcraft 2 was announced a long time ago and Diablo 3 as well. Neither franchise has an MMO planned.

There is no equivalent MMO in either the Starcraft or the Diablo series.

Have either of you played Age of Conan? Tortage at least (being the only bit I've done so far) is pretty story based. The difference in TOR (as far as I can tell) is that the class quests (the equivalent of AoC's destiny quests) actually take place in the open world, with only small pieces phased / instanced, but even then you can still bring a party for most -if not all- of it.force192 wrote...

I don't know why so many people think an MMO can't be story-driven. The only reason some MMOs aren't already considered story-driven is that the story's so poorly presented (quest text..) that it goes overlooked, but there's noting to say it's impossible.

Yes, but if you've followed their updates lately, you'd see that they're "rich, deep story" is not all that impressive. Same Jedi vs. Sith storyline. In fact, they even copy-pasted characters from the movies. For example, that Han Solo clone in the Return trailer. That's why I'm skeptical about this MMO.

How does that make everybody happy?
There are those of us that want an Old Republic RPG single player experience not MMO.
Those of us that want an Old Republic RPG without the requirement of an Internet connection or subscription fee in order to play.

Except the bits that are neither, like the Eternity Vault, or the Tatooine dev Imperial walkthrough which made no reference at all to fighting the Republic. The overarching theme is Republic vs. Empire, just as it was in both KotOR games, but there's other stuff in there as well, just like both KotOR games.Capt. Obvious wrote...

Well good news! Two such games exist, but if you always want more then you'll never be satisfied. Like I said though, there's a book if you want more of the story without playing the MMO, nobody's forcing you to play TOR.AxecObl wrote...

FYI, if you buy TOR now you get a months game time included, that should be enough to play through the solo content (of which there's a fair bit, as I understand). That's 2/3 of your problems down right there.

There is a planet dedicated to end game for solo players....I don't think 1 month is enough to experience 8 classes with different stories.

Oh ya, because being play the game for only one month is completely worth buying it. I don't know about you; but when I buy a Rpg, I tend to want to make multiple playthroughs and spend more than just a month playing the game. I'm not about to spend $50 on a game that I can't even explore the whole content of it without spend yet more money. I know no one is forcing me to buy the game. I will not be buying it. I also realize that we will most likely never see another KotOR, but that doesn't mean we can't still hope for one.

I would rather have a proper KOTOR 3 myself. The Old Republic doesn't look all that promising, rather bland and as far as MMORPGs go, Guild Wars 2 looks x10 better.

I would suggest the following: There should be two types of subscriptions, a solo subscription and a normal one, the former will add 6 months of play time for only 15$ while adding HEAVY social restrictions on you, like: You can't join a party/group/raid, you can't whisper anybody(but you can respond), you can't join guilds and you can't add friends, the point of this one is to please everyone that just want to experiance the story without paying 15$ each month.
The latter is a normal subscription like any other MMO.

If said RPG allowed me to play with all my friends online and thousands of others and was continuously being updated with significant new content I'd say it was worth the £9 a month (though if there's a better value, long-term plan I'll take that). Frankly, I spend more on soft drinks over a fortnight. Now you do know about me.AxecObl wrote...

If a game's good enough to hold my attention for more than a month I'd probably end up buying DLC for it anyway. Of course I'd rather it be free, but the same could be said of everything, that's just life.
I was at my local Game today, and TOR was first and third (CE) on the PC chart. We'll have to wait and see how well it holds subs, but that's not bad for a game with no release date.Andarthiel_Demigod wrote...
Highly unlikely(especially if The Old Republic sells poorly)

As for GW2... I know better than to get into that argument again.
