I should be receiving my 4 in 1 Baldur's Gate series next week.  I've been looking online to see if they're any patches that I would need for the game and found this site; http://www.blackwyrm...net/patches.php.

Are these patches necessary and what exactly do they patch? It seems they just deal with language patching, or do they patch something else?

The patches are indeed necessary - for BG1 and Tales of the Sword Coast you'll need the patch to squash what is known as the global variable bug. Some forgot to add more what is known as more flags to tales of the sword coast.

For BG2, you'll need the patch to squash out the 'x appers busy' bug. For Throne of Bhaal, I think the patch adds some new items to both BG2 and Throne of Bhaal.

As for tthe patches dealing with language patching, this is not so. The patches are for the the different versions of the game. There was as that time a UK version and US version and an international version of the games.
