Hello there,

I recently got an xbox 360 and said to give this classic a try again, since I never got to finish it on the PC due to various technical bugs (slowdowns and crashes mostly).

Alas, it seems my enthusiasm had been killed pretty soon when I realised that even after 2 years from release, the XBOX version of the game is still plagued by bugs that cause the game to freeze.

I am at the tower of Ishal now and for the past 6 hours I've had to reboot the console 16 times due to the game freezing. It does it randomly after even just 2-3 minutes of gameplay and there doesn't seem to be something specific triggering it (happened during battles, during level-up, during inventory management, during radial menu browsing). The XBOX isn't overheating as it it lukewarm to the touch and the fan isn't running very fast.

I've tried installing the game to the hard drive, playing directly from the DVD, erased the system cache several times... nothing seems to work.

Now, is there a magical way to stop these annoying lock-ups? It is ruining the game and it frustrates me very much. I should be past Redcliffe by now, but I'm still struggling in Ostagar due to playing 3 minutes then rebooting and reloading another 5.

PS: On the PC, the patches were tens of megabytes large... on the XBOX I've only been asked to apply a 4MB patch. Is that right? Or is there any more manual work to do to apply the latest patch to the game? The region is UK and the DA:O version is PAL.

Short answer: I don't believe there's much we can do about freezes.

The waffle....

As a 360 owner I would state that short of clearing the cache, which you've mentioned you've done, there probably isn't much more that can be done for console owners. Freezes tend to be random, as you've indicated, but infrequent. Though the frequency you suggest is disturbing and really shouldn't be the case. When patch 1.04 was originally released it 'broke' the Slim models while the older ones were fine. Given the technology of the 360s now I half suspect certain model numbers are perhaps more susceptible to certain problems than others.

And to be honest I wouldn't really expect to see another patch after 1.04 for the 360. All current bugs and glitches are likely to remain.

Patching on the 360 is essentially automatic. You pop in the game, it boots up, and if there's a new patch available it informs you of it and you can choose whether to apply it or not.

Thanks for the reply. As a suggestion from a friend, I've reduced the resolution from 1080p to 480p and so far, it hasn't crashed anymore. I don't know if it actually made a difference or if it is merely a coincidence, but it's good enough for me.

Too bad that support has been so poor for this game... it is an extraordinary game but unfortunately with a poor build quality.

I own both the PC and the 360 version... I bought the ultimate edition for my 360 because I didn't want to by PC DLC piecemeal or deal with the authentication stuff...

Anyways, I've been running it at 720p for over 30 hours of gameplay with no problems at all. I know that the box says that the resolution supported is 1080p but firsthand experience most Xbox 360 games run "native" at 720p.

With consoles being more complicated and becoming more PC-like, it's difficult to pinpoint the precise causes. More difficult as you would ideally need the actual model specifications of the 360 which has had quite a few revisions.

For example, I've set my Falcon model 360 to output 1080 (can't remember if it was 'i' or 'p') and I rarely ever have freezes. Slim models were messed up by the original 1.04 patch with older consoles unaffected.
