i just got mass effect, and it doesn't work. I have tried updating my drivers, updating direct x, patching it to 1.02, reinstalling it THREE times, and pretty much every trick in the book >:(

I have never once got to the main menu, because the game always gets the general protection fault gmatrix2d etc. error. This usually happens after the screen goes black.

for all I know it isn't my hardware, because mass effect 2 runs perfectly well on max settings.
and all of my drivers are up to date.

Other than refund the piece of crap, what else can i do?

System specs, if they matter.
Processor: AMD Phenom II X4 940 @ 3.0GHz
Video card: ati radeon hd 5570
OS: Win XP SP3
Direct X version: 9.29
RAM: 3.25gb

Look at this topic http://social.biowar...1/index/8266037 and try their solution and see if it helps.

Update: I have actually gotten past the main menu, by playing around with the config utility. But the game is still unplayable no matter what i do, It either crashes through the general protection fault, or the whole screen goes black.

Set CPU core affinity to single core. ME1 had problems with multicore CPU's, especially AMD CPU's which more often then not have their cores running at slightly different speeds.

You running 32 or 64 bit version of XP?

Setting it to 1 core results in the same "general protection fault" or "first 4 bytes read is zero" error
my XP is 32bit by the way

Something else try, is see if you can dl from origin....I am seeing a bunch of issues related to the Value games edition. I don't know if the quality checks are off or if it is just bad crap, but people have had a variety of issues and they are fixed with getting another disk or dling from origin.

I am singularly unimpressed with everything about Steam, personally.

Only thing i can think of it is you are running either a laptop with switchable graphics, or a desktop that has an onboard intel chipset that hasnt been diabled in the bios or windows configuration.

Actually I did get it to run decently on my eee PC(which has and AMD chipset). I would still prefer playing it on a desktop.

Given that you only have the "budget" video graphics card from AMD's HD 5n00 generation, you shouldn't be able to get above a mix of Medium and "some" High Settings in ME-2, unless your default screen resolution is quite low.  Nevertheless, the real facts of System Requirements for the two games are that ME1 was grossly misrepresented regarding what it could run on, while ME-2 was far better optimized, and able to run with far less CPU power than ME-1 would, for instance.

The "Brazos" APU has only an HD 6310 integrated video system, which is well below what an HD 5570 amounts to.

You probably have a problem either with Dx9 or a damaged graphics driver.  You may wish to back off a notch to a next previous driver, such as 11.7

 I don't know what you mean by module, but I almost always get this-

"General Protection Fault!

History:GMatrix2D::Swap()Address = 0x10bd429b (filename not found)
Address = 0x245c8b53 (filename not found)"

otherwise, I get this error-

"First 4 bytes read is zero from ..\\BioGame\\CookedPC\\Maps\\EntryMenu.SFM.

RaiseException() Address = 0x7c812afb (filename not found)
CxxThrowException() Address = 0x7815e89 (filename not found)
GMatrix2D::Swap() Address = 0x10da7b63 (filename not found)
Address = 0xe8781b4c (filename not found)"

From that error message, all I can thin of is, as Gorath mentioned, either a corruption withing DirectX9.0c and to try reinstalling it, or your video drivers have become corrupted, and need to be stripped out and reinstalled.
