Indiana Jones is not a trilogy, just like James Bond movies are not part of one great story. They are movies playing around the same character. Three Scooby Doo episodes are not a trilogy.

Of course we might argue if ME3 will or will not be a good entry point, but I don't think this thread was about that, it's more or less about how does ME3 being a good entry point affects importance of previous games and choices made in them.

And nope... four Resident Evil games are not a tetralogy. A game having sequels doesn't instantly makes it a single story arc.

Obviously not only haters and complainers don't understand how trilogies work.

So you are saying this business with the reapers is not a story arc?  I would have sworn the reapers were mentioned quite a bit so far in both ME 1 and ME  2.

Mr Kusy, I admit I never agreed with you in the past but I am with you all the way on Mass Effect as being a trilogy, Mass effect main selling point is the story.

Can't believe that was ever in dispute. I figured that was pretty obvious.

Since I've never seen the choices of previous game having HUGE impact on later game, there's no reason to believe it will happen now. Note: HUGE impact means something which will take a lot of time/money on development stage, for example new type of enemies, big plot arc, changes in gameplay. Plus/minus one choice, or one character, is possible; something bigger seems to be too resource-wasting?

But PS3? If developers were dying to implement the repercussions of choices, Mass Effect: Genesis would just look like really long checkbox. Or existing interactive comic would be just stuffed for a limit with decision choices.

If the PS3 players don't have ME1... they all start with the "yaaaay! Humanity!" Renegade runthrough and can't do **** about it? Interesting.

Being renegade and being pro-humanity doesn't have to be mutually exclusive.

*yawn*

I could say that ME2 will be irrelevant, because I have the option to buy just the third game.
In other words: this thread again.

Um, no they don't.  Ever heard of "Genesis"?

I hadn't heard of it until now. Just searched for it on the wiki. Thanks for the "tip" ^_^

Anyone actually think that maybe Bioware will release a Mass Effect Trilogy bundle featuring all three games and DLC for all systems?

Just sayin'

For the PC and Xbox, its a possibility, but the PS3 would have to get a ME2/ME3 bundle instead seeing as how ME1 can't get ported to the PS3 for seemingly legal reasons unfortunately.

As for the whole ME3 being a good starting point, come on guys - do you seriously expect them to say "Mass Effect 3 is the worst place to jump on! Don't buy it unless you get Mass Effect 1 and 2! We don't want your money folks!"

Some of the people on this forum are so needlessly difficult.

I can't think of any other consequence from Feros in ME3.

See, this is something that baffles me, the attitude that Feros cannot possibly have any effect in ME3, because it wasn't in the Genesis comic for PS3 players.

So... I need a PS3 player to confirm something here (because I can't find any footage of it on youtube): on Illium, do you still meet the Feros colonist, as you do in ME2 if you don't import a character?

If so, then the only choice PS3 players have missed out on is whether or not to execute Shiala. Why is that important? It means that although Shiala probably can't be plot critical, 'cos the coice isn't covered in the comic, Feros still happened, and COULD still have an impact in ME3.

Of course, this is all based on whether the Feros colonist does appear on Illium in the PS3 version... :P

Yes you still meet the Feros colonist and the games assumes you didn't save the colony(and killed Shiala), also you don't meet Conrad or Gianna Parasini.

A lot of secondary characters are not possible to see in PS3 version of ME2 but if it doesn't effect the plot in a major way in ME3 then it's ok I guess however I would still like the option to see them lol.  :P

Yep she is still there and she still comments on how *you* saved them from the Thorian.

Edit: The only thing you really miss out on playing on the PS3 are character's being automatically dead. Kirrahe, Rana and the sort.

Also,

Marvellous, thanks guys and/or gals, for confirming.

The point stands, then: Feros still happened in the PS3 version of the universe, and was thus definitely not "another filler mission that was a waste of time". In fact, I could argue that it being included in the main body of ME2, not in the comic, makes it more likely to become important again, in ME3.

I'm not arguing that, 'cos we know next to nothing about the full plot of the game so far, but I could if I wanted to... :P

Quit trying to veil your PS3 hate behind such a lame excuse. They probably wanted to leave those elements open for conclusion in ME3 because you know, they can conclusively end them in ME3 instead of giving it to you a game earlier. TRILOGY.

People have brought this up before, I imagine you've gotten allot of **** for this post, but it's a very legitimate concern. Throwing in another platform after the first game's out basically ensures that at least on playerbase will be left out. It'll be interesting to see how bioware will handle it, and if they'll handle it well. But I'll assume that the consequences of your choices probably won't be as fleshed out as they could have been, because they'll have to account for that third variable. And sidequests like the keeper scanning will likely only be mentioned in passing, whereas had the PS3 been in the loop since the beginning, or ME had stayed Xbox and PC exclusive you may have gotten another sidequest that tied into the original.

BTW, this quote from back in 2006 when Mass Effect 1 was still in development is relevant:

CVG: What inspired your decision to turn Mass Effect into a trilogy? How long will we have to wait for the second and third installments?

Hudson: We want to create the biggest and most memorable interactive science-fiction experience possible and that meant being able to not only tell one great story, but to be able to constantly elevate the experience across future adventures in a way that feels like one enormous experience.

This isn't one story spread across three episodes though. Instead, each game will have a self-contained story with a spectacular and satisfying ending.

Yes, there are threads that will continue through each installment of the series (and even the most casual scrutiny makes this clear: geth/quarian conflict, genophage, Cerberus, etc.) but this notion that they only just recently decided to make the games self-contained is flat-out wrong. It was part of the deal from the start. And keep in mind, this is from well before EA purchased them, when Microsoft was the publisher, and the series was still exclusive to the 360 platform.

Then why have a game with returning cast/crew, continues timelime, and promote it as a "choose your own adventure" game in which choices matter, if not in the same game, it'll matter in the next?

Really, what was the point of making world changing choices in ME1, if their not going to have any effect in the next installment.

It's like "Sheperd we know you saved our lives, but we still don't believe you and we're neither going to support you or imprison you for treason, here is a spectre status use it for thanes loyalty mission, and maybe help some random Qurian. Maybe in the next game we'll believe you again and you can have Valerns ass for a night."

The biggest flaw's ive seen were side missions(especially in ME2), the main plot of ME2 which falls apart when you start analyzing it and the retcons. I think the most glaring problem is the change of lead writers in the middle of series, and this shows.

I just hope all of these will be better in ME3. They at least have a direction now, let's hope they do good with it.

The could as easily add all those points in without consolation as they could take them away, so you kinda don't seem concerned, more so you seem bitter.

Feros wasn't mentioned because there was no major choice to be made there that would be reflected in ME2. Shiala really wasn't important and you get the colonist quest anyway. Noveria only gets a brief mention so players know Benezia died there so they don't expect to run into her again.

Ilos actually does get a mention but there was no choice there, you talked to Vigil and went to the Citadel no matter what.

It's mostly party member stuff: Who dies, who romances. And critical story stuff: Rachni, and Council.

But yeah, Feros Noveria and Ilos were stuff that were important to ME1's immediate plot of stopping Saren but won't really have much of an effect on the later games.

It's like the Death Star plans in A New Hope. Critical to that films climax, but has nothing to do with the greater plot of the entire trilogy.

Not going to happen. Microsoft still holds the rights for first ME game and under no circumstances (unless MS acquires Sony lol!) will they allow a game to be published on a rival platform.

What the haters and complainers don't understand is that you don't put all of your fireworks in the second act, you have them in the third act. Oh how little the haters and complainers know about trilogies. Oh how ignorant the haters and complainers are.
