its been a while since i finished shadows of amn i forget do you go directly to the throne of bhaal expansion? and if you do is there a way around this id like to stay around and finish quests before i do. any input is appreciated

You should go straight to ToB once you defeat JI in Hell.
Once you hit the abode of Ellesime, it is all quite linear. There is no way to leave and do anything anywhere.

After you exit the Underdark, you should still be able to finish up any quests you have left. I'd do the ones outside of Athkatla first since you have to return to Athkatla as part of the main story anyway. Just make sure you do everything you want to BEFORE you help the elves because, as Ishad Nha said, then there's no turning back.

As I remember it, you can't go back to Athkathla (sp?) when you have finished fighting Irenicus in BG2.
As other have said, you'll need to finish up any sidequests etc. before you fight Irenicus.

Edit:
As the poster above me said, you'll need to go back Athkatla at one point in ToB's story; I think, it'll be sometime at the start of ToB...

You cannot go back to Athkatla from a certain point onwards, and certainly not from ToB. The only area common to both SoA and ToB is the Watchers Keep.
