I just played through ME1 again and noticed that very early on that Ash had decided that she wasn't going to be a LI.   I don't recall Shep slapping her down or being unkind at any time.  I chose one or two reponses differently than in other playthroughs but nothing that I would have thought would pour cold water on the relationship.

Any ideas which conversation it was??

Note:  IIRC when I visited Ash and overheard the Email from her sister the LI was already dead because it was Kaidan that was the "hot" one ...

You probably selected wrong option when she complained about aliens aboard the Normandy.
