Mass Effect - How it took over the world

I think its skimming the fine line between awesome game series and world take over game of awesome. If ME3 bridges the differences between ME1 & ME2 I think it will finally make that leap into gaming immortality.

"The same we do every night, Priestly. Try to take over the world... with a video game." Narf.
Take over the world well... it's certainly added a major stamp on the industry.

Looking forward to the real money auction house in Diablo III?
No.
That's a feature I'm very skeptical about.

That article reminded me of the kind of thing I would write at five in the morning, high on caffeine and ranting at a friend about how great my Mass Effect thing is. I would tell a friend it was the biggest game of 2012 and I'd remind them that ME2's sales bested ME1's because people had realized over time just how grand the whole gig really was. And I'd proudly proclaim that it's taking over the world.
And my friend would be like 'uh-huh' and tell me to go to bed.

No don't think so. But, still, it is one of the best games of this generation so far.

No. It's not my most anticipated game. That's Skyrim. And after that it's Diablo III.
I'd anticipate ME3 more if it weren't for the stupid Thermal Clips.
See I don't understand this statement....
Let me get this straight... Mass Effect 2 (and 3) are considerably diminished in your eyes because it uses ammunition in its game mechanic?
Soooo.. you're telling me the overriding appeal of the series is.... the shooting aspect? Not the characters? The story? The adventure? .... it's... the shooting? Really? ........ Really?
I mean.... I'd get it if this was Gears of War or Call of Duty where plot & characters are tertiary to gameplay and good old fashioned mindless gunplay (nothing wrong with that)... but those games are designed with the gunplay at the forefront, so one could understand if they fudged up the gunplay.
I thought the whole appeal / point of mass effect was the intrigue of the chracters and story... not the gunplay, if anything that's secondary / tertiary in terms of importance.
The existence of an ammo system in ME2 (were I one to be bothered by it.. which I'm not)... would be a source of nearly immeasurably small annoyance.. it would do nothing to detract from the game's appeal to me since the shooty-shoot-shooting stuff is rather low on the scale of importance to me.
Ah well... to each their own.... but I find complaining about something as small as ammo in Mass Effect to be as silly as complaining that Pac Man has no meaningful plot.

This sums it up quite well.

It seems unthinkable now, but Mass Effect was only a moderate commercial success. Published by Microsoft and exclusive to Xbox, it sold 1.6 million units in its first six weeks. Two years later, ME2 would sell two million copies in its first three days.
Oh hey, that lie again. Too bad EA's own earnings reports reveal it for the distortion that it is.

Uhmmmm.... 7 billion people on earth.
let's pretend anywhere between 3-6 million people bought ME2. That's a fraction of a percentage of the world's population.
You could erase 3-6 million people from the face of the earth and (while horribly tragic) it would make little to no actual impact on the day to day lives of 99.9% of the world.
So no.. the game hasn't changed the world in any shape or form. What it has done is provide a few million people with wonderful entertainment.
But let's not get carried away with insane hyperbole like this statement made in the article.

Mass Effect 1 was a very, very good game.
Mass Effect 2 was a great game. Seriously. Loved it.
Mass Effect 3 will be epic.
Skyrim? Meh. Diablo III? Pffffsstt.
I want a great story. I want great action. I want war damn it! These freaking Reapers have been hounding me for far too long!
And if Origin isn't required to play it I'll have it pre-purchased for PC and in my formally nicotine stained fingers on day 1.
I'll also be taking vacation that week to be able to devote some serious time to it.
Yeah. I'm serious. And I haven't done that (taken a vacation just to play a video game) since Final Fantasy III came out on the SNES.
If Origin is required....well.......I'll just have to wait and buy a used copy for the 360 and play it on Friday nights when I have the free time.
But it will still be epic!

I think people used the same argument while discussing the Reaper attack on Earth based on the trailer.
"Nine million people dead in a week? Pfff."

True, but Mass Effect is certainly gaining renown in the gaming world. With a movie on the way Mass Effect might develop a similar fame to Star Wars or Batman. Of course unless the movie sucks. Then we just keep Mass Effect to ourselves.

I dislike the gameplay mechanic. And I dislike the way it's contradicts the story.
The rules of an RPG are the tools to develop a consistent plot.
Which means, when the rules contradict the story it weakens the story. Thus the game is weakened.
