Only because he came across as somewhat self-serving in his post. He could've written his original post in a better way, for instance merely pointing out the article and leaving it at that... instead he asked the same question the author of the original article did (and the author's original statement was absurd).. which came across as, gloating, bragging, etc (I suspect that was not his intent.. but it came across that way, hence the numerous negative responses).

Just saw a new article from CVG asking why Mass Effect has taken over the world. Check out the article here.

Do you think Mass Effect has taken over the world?

Given that I think Star Wars has reached and fallen from its peak.. I truly think Mass Effect could be the "next big thing" that captures an entire generation's attention, the potential is there and the franchise isn't just limited to video games any more.

I welcome our new overlords with open arms.

Me too. Mark Meer should do the audio-bibles, btw.

I love Mass Effect, but I wouldn't say it's bigger than Fallout, Gears of War, or other popular titles. Not to say those titles are bigger than Mass Effect either. It's nowhere near as big, popular, or well known as something like WoW or Call of Duty though. I wouldn't even say it's the most popular RPG. Mass Effect is definitely a triple A title, but... Mass Effect and Bioware are not as amazing as the article fellaciates. That's not a jab at Bioware, FYI, before someone jumps on me. That article is just embarassing though. I'd think even marketing would find those claims cringeworthy.

It's taken over MY world, Chris. That much I know for sure.

Haha! This. The Mass Effect series is going down as some of my all time favorite games of this console generation.

I find shooters boring and by the way, I liked the Mako. I don't even play the hover tank missions.

they've looped in Xbox's rabid shooter community, bred on Call of Duty and Gears of War, and widened the appeal further.

And all but completely ignored the RPG fans.

Except that they didn't.

Pride comes before a fall, as they say - whoever they are.

I'll reserve judgement until I've played the finished product next year - then I'll be judgy as hell!

As much as I love the Mass Effect series...... but "changed the world"?

Uhmmmm.... 7 billion people on earth.

let's pretend anywhere between 3-6 million people bought ME2. That's a fraction of a percentage of the world's population.

You could erase 3-6 million people from the face of the earth and (while horribly tragic) it would make little to no actual impact on the day to day lives of 99.9% of the world.

So no.. the game hasn't changed the world in any shape or form. What it has done is provide a few million people with wonderful entertainment.

But let's not get carried away with insane hyperbole like this statement made in the article.

I think they were talking about gaming world.

Nah, it's just a spoon done few weeks after that trailer was out.

Though, ME3 is the most anticipated games of E3( in front of Modern Warfail 3 and Battlefront 3) and in other convections it was one of the most anticipated games.

Can those numbers really happen on March 6th and 9th of 2012?

Some of us can be a lot harsher if we were going just on perception of tone in Priestly's original post.

I can't speak for others, but I responded to his question and not what may have been behind it.  I haven't even read the article and don't feel I have to because the answer is a resounding no.  With two games out (ME - Xbox/PC, ME2 - Xbox/PC/PS3) it doesn't have a cult following that approaches the game I spoke of earlier: World of Warcraft.  That game was mentioned in how many movies since it's release?  How many television shows have mentioned it by name?  It even gets mentioned in news reports sometimes.  Parents know about it.  What was the last game you felt you could bring up to a collective group of parents and they'd acknowledge they heard of it...other than Pokemon?  Maybe mentioning Mario would get that reconizable look on some of their faces, but the majority of them?  I don't think so.

The idea that Mass Effect took over the world is ridiculous especially if it's true that they wanted to attract CoD numbers?  By that measure I would say Call of Duty took over the world before Mass Effect did.  You can't make your mark on the world if no one knows who you are.  And if you start talking about how you made a mark on the world without actually making that mark you end up looking really silly.  EA payed millions for a Super Bowl spot for ME2 (supposedly) and I guarantee you of all the people that watched the Super Bowl last year, only a handful of people remember the ad.

I think some of you are over-analysing this article.. Mass Effect is on the rise, it hasn't hit the peak yet.

No, we're not. The writer of that article says that ME has taken over the world, not that it will.

You believe everything the media says? Look at the entire article, there's a lot of gross exaggeration going on.

For some to take personal offense to the article being innaccurate is more tragic than silly.

It's like getting offended when the news says Tiger Woods only slept with two women because we all know that isn't true.
