Mass Effect definitely did grow in popularity but until it has launches like Halo 2 and 3 I'm not going to say it has taken over a country yet less the world.

Mass Effect won't get halo numbers because the Halo franchise is centered around it's mulitplayer.  People often play multiplayer shooters like Halo because it doesn't take that much commitment.  You can fire up your xbox play a few matches for 40 minutes or so then you can turn it off.  Mass Effect on the other hand takes commitment.  When you play Mass Effect you are investing your time into a character who's story arc spans three entire games when all is said and done (I know Master Chief's story also takes place over multiple games but Halo single player is short).  My average ME 1 run consists of anywhere between 30-35 hours and my ME 2 runs are close to 50 hours (DLC included).  So far that is close to 80 hours of gameplay per Shepard and in March you can expect at least another 30 or so hours to be added and then more when DLC starts coming out.  Overall for me Mass Effect is a much better overall gaming experience than Halo but Mass Effect takes commitment while Halo not so much.  Not everybody has the time needed to invest all of those hours in Mass Effect.  In a sense Halo is more accessible but if you have the time Mass Effect is more than worth it.

God, that article was annoying.

The main thing I take from the article was the idiocy of Microsoft to not shell out the $ to keep ME XBOX/PC exclusive.

Looks like it wasn't worth it.

Or possible. ME never owned the IP, only publishing rights to the game. The times of 3rd party exclusives are gone.

I'd take Mass Effect over Star Wars, Star Trek, Skyrim all that jazz. I hope it doesn't get too popular though. Then everyone and their mothers wants a say in what the game includes and then it becomes a multiplayer COD or something

All I know is that as after 20+ years gaming, it's changed the way I look at games. Before I pick up a game these days, I find myself asking: is this going to be as much fun as Mass Effect 2? Will I enjoy the characters and story as much? Will the gameplay be as addictive? Will I get the ability to customize my character right down to the way they look? Will I get the power of choice over the twists and turns in the story?

Dragon Age 2 was the only game I was able to answer a theoretical yes to each question on. Bioware is the only company making these games right now, and it's a crying shame.

So taking over the world is something I can't really speculate about; but taking over MY LIFE, I can say with conviction that it has.

To me Mass Effect has been more of a journey than a video game. Mass Effect is one of those things that transcends it's genre or entertainment medium for me. The day I beat Mass Effect 3 will be a bittersweet moment for me. I am looking forward to seeing how everything plays out and how all of the story arcs that have begun since ME 1 conclude but I will be sorry to see the journey end.

Except that they didn't.

Where are the trailers bragging about all the new RPG elements? The advances in the conversation system?

Hm, yes...*Pulls pipe from mouth, holding it at the ready* Mass Effect 3 and Skyrim will both have special places in my heart.  In fact, even Dragon Age 2, with all of its flaws, holds a tiny plot in there.  It's like that...that special child that you can't help but--oh, no, no.  No ranting here. ^_^  Anyhow, I can't wait to play BOTH games :P

You complainers are like a broken record and you ignore articles, interviews. and even demos that even show some of the rpg stuff so you can continue to complain.  You complainers like to complain and you continue to complain for complaining's sake.

I agree with this.  It's hard to describe, but ME1 and ME2 were so epic and engrossing for me that it was like talking to a good friend.  Most of the time, you know what your friend is going to do and say, but every once in a while they still surprise you.  It could be six months or six years, and for all thier faults you welcome the chance to spend time with them, because they are just that amazing.

Finishing ME3 will almost be like saying goodbye.  I predict the cure will be starting over with ME1.

lol I am actualy in the middle of an ME 1 run right now.  From what I have heard ME 3 will have the most replayability out of the 3 games (though I replay both games all the time right now so I don't know if I need any more replayability) so I am thinking there can be different conclusions to story arcs and ME 3's story may be quite different from playthrough to playthrough (waits for a hater to say it won't)

Has ME taken over the world? No.

Has ME had a significant impact this generation? Yes.

While not revolutionary by any means, BioWare has managed to craft a compelling, detailed universe that has created a legion (pardon the pun) of fans equal in passion to its creators. You can't deny how emblazoned fans can become, and that's just on these forums. Imagine those worldwide, or the fans who participate via fan art, fan fiction or cosplay. The fact that Mass Effect 3 is being billed by many members of the gaming community as the most anticipated game of 2012 accounts for something.

No it hasn't taken over the world. It has the potential to take over the world of its fans, and from the looks of it it appears that it already may have done just that.

Hmm, well, this article was an over the top, embarrassing (even for a ME fan), slobbering piece of fluff.

But if I can pan for gold--what kind of affect has ME had on the Gaming world/industry? I don't think it's gotten there yet, but ME is poised to make big ripples and change the way players see games and what they expect from games in the future.

I love that it's a hybrid. I'm not interested in going down the rabbit hole of RPG mechanics. I like customization, but not micromanaging. Is it an RPG, or an OCD? (no offense to any OCD'ers). Give me great story; great combat; and great characters.

I Loved ME1. I Loved ME2. I fully expect I will love ME3. I don't know what it is about ME (except that maybe Casey Hudson is some kinda warlock and we're all indoctrinated), but the series has made it very hard for me to find other games that I enjoy as much. This sucks.

It's like I've got ME on the brain. Every time I play another game I end up just comparing it to ME. And b*tching cuz it's not:

"What the hell kinda animation is this?"
"Why can't I do (watever)?"
"Oh, you clearly stole that bit from ME2!"
"Oh, yeah I can't import. So, who gives a damn."

It's like I'm in love, and while my lover is away I'm trying to pass the time with someone else. But they aren't them.

The only one that comes close for me (as far as enjoyment) is AC2 and up. I didn't care for AC1. I played it after AC2 & Brotherhood which maybe why. It's a completely different style, yet again, the story is amazing. And although you can't import, the other games carry on the story and resolution. And I love the combat.

I tried Oblivion a few weeks ago because I heard so many great things about it. I didn't like it at all.

Impact on gaming world? They all borrow from each other. Heave and lurch together. ME is a step in the right direction. Western "RPG" s are making their mark on the gaming world. ME has raised the bar as far player interaction; story and NPC's.  And it does all this without being OTT graphic about it all.

I hope they do take over the gaming world. So far, I really like this franchise.

I want to try BF and GoW. I'm more interested in BF than GoW....I tried MGS3 and...it's alright....

DX..I'm more a guns blazin' kinda player. And FPS makes me sick. Literally. They make me wanna puke after about 15 minutes. So, thank goodness ME is TPS. Besides which, FPS makes me feel like I can't see. Like 70% of my area of vision as been cut off.

I apologize for the tl;dr post, but yeah. ME hasn't taken over the gaming world yet. It could blow up, tho. I think it should and it would be deserved.

That is because the complainers are always louder and they just wait to pounce on something.  The latter pages of this thread were more positive and the thread was setup with positivity in mind.  Seriously someone could make a thread just to say how much they love Mass Effect and the haters and complainers would still pounce on it.  And yes I know the OP works for bioware but still.  At the very least it is rude to ruin his thread (I know the complainers will pounce on me for saything that but oh well bring it on complainers)

Too early to tell. We'll see in a few years if any other devs aside from Obsidian have taken any significant influence from Mass Effect.

C'mon Kotor man!

You've been a forumite long enough to know the rules! Inevitably, every thread is invaded by the crowd of successful writers, video game designers and entrepeneurs who all know how to make a better game than Bioware. They will insult the game and its fans (usually drawing from an extensive library of complaints ranging from "not rpg enough" to "Skyrim is so much better"). Then they will proceed to agree with one another, usually using the "it's just constructive criticism" defense before launching a diatribe of melodramatic nonsense punctuated with: RIP Bioware 1996-2007.

Just saw a new article from CVG asking why Mass Effect has taken over the world. Check out the article here.

Do you think Mass Effect has taken over the world?

Well I was going to avoid adding to the dogpile here of negativity as I feel slightly sorry as this is probably not the reaction you want from "fans". Unfortunately reading the article has lead to some serious WTFs in my head. (I really need to use everyone's beloved Rear Admiral for my avatar I think...)

No Mass Effect has not taken over the world. And I think the likelyhood of such happening is pretty small as the series is not really doing anything groundbreaking as far as most people are concerned. ME is a mash-up of several genres that while good doesn't really do anything better. It's a nifty hybrid, but it's a hybrid that can only possible appeal to a niche market (Shooter and RPG people are generally pretty dorky.) Unfortunately the hybrid alienates both purists and the RPG purists are not exactly happy with ME2's direction.

I think the number one excuse for my friends is Mass Effect, especially ME2 just looks Gears of War in space. Of course it probably doesn't help most of my friends are PS3 folks and they still see Mass Effect as a "stupid" Xbox game. I've tried very hard to convince them otherwise. But honestly for them it's more fun to either play CoD or kill random people and loot their corpse in Fallout. And I can't really convince them that ME2 has great story on par or better then say Final Fantasy.

The only other person I actually know to play Mass Effect is my brother. And his interest is very passive at this point. Couldn't even convince him to try Arrival, though can't really blame him for not wanting to. Funny thing is it his fault for introducing me to the series and making me a nerd of yet another game series. So as others have said Mass Effect has taken over my "world" but for most people... eh not really. Sorry.

Now for that article...

Ignoring the fact that the author didn't even bother to use a spellcheck before putting this on the web... Lemme quote Rear Adm. Mickhailovich:

"What are you thinking Commander?!"

Okay how is playing ME1 anything like Gears of War? ME1 is nothing like Gears except in the fact it was a TPS and uses the same engine. I liked ME1 cause I was like "Oh good this game isn't exactly like CoD 4 or GoW. I'm actually play a legit game here made by Bioware."

As for the "Mass Market". Those 2 million copies in the first 3 days of ME2's release were probably all from former ME1 owners pre-ordering etc. You also have the added benefit of releasing both 360 and PC at the same time and the fact ME1 established the series name for you.

ME3 will likely sell more then ME2 did due to a lot of new people who likely picked up ME2, but there is substantial number of folk disgruntled over some things so ME3 may not outsell ME2 in such a fasion as so happened with ME1. Also in terms of total sales I believe ME2 has only sold an extra few hundred thousand copies. If ME2 has sold an extra 1 million copies in comparison to ME1 then you can start to brag. Although I'd saying counting the PS3 in this is a bit unfair and ME1 was released late on PC too.

Oh let's see what else... ah there's this quote: "another way the development team will further assimilate fans"

Resistance is futile much there?

"they've looped in Xbox's rabid shooter community"

You think BSN is bad now... just wait. That "demographic" has honestly done more harm then good as it only serves to fuel the stereotype that "gamers" are all dudes wound up on Moutain Dew and being between the ages of 14-25 screaming into their mics whenever someone steals their kill.

"the rise of the West and the decline of the East"

Death to the JRPGs!

Look I don't care much if at all for JRPGs, but I don't exactly want them to suck, cause you know there are people who do actually enjoy those sorts of games. I especially don't want to see JRPGs "die" if that means the rise of a bunch herpy derpy Western Cowboy Shooters. Shooters are the rage right now, but people are going to get sick of it here at some point and the genre is going to suffer a fallout. I find this mentality highly disturbing as it shows people don't seem realize that over-saturation or too much of same thing tends to harm genres.

This article is a joke right? Cause honestly re-reading it here it's almost funny.
