I've had my Steam version of ME2 installed for quite a while and it was running fine as of a few weeks ago.  Now when I try to start it up it prompts me to go into Online mode, then says it needs to install ME2 because of Steam's "new content system."  ME2 is still installed on my system.  I'm reluctant to re-install it without knowing WTF is going on.  I can't find any discussion of this on the Steam forum.

What gives?  Does this have to do with Origin?

Hmmm...I know Steam talked about their new content system a while back here Not sure what that might have to do with ME2 though. Have you been offline for a long time? Steam does on occasion need to go online after its been offline for a while, so maybe that has something to do with it?

This thread and this thread on the Steam forums seems like maybe it might have something to do with the issue you're having. Seems like maybe someone at Valve goofed up.

Hmm, I've been playing the steam version of ME2 this past week and have had no such issue. What Brock said about having to update after being offline for a while could be one scenario, though I somehow think it's a different issue.

I do play in offline mode, so likely hadn't been online in a while. But this alert popped up when I tried to start the game in offline mode.

I'm gonna hang out for a while and let Valve sort itself out.

Ok, I finally got that same message today and all that was required was to let Steam update the content by itself. Took between 5-10 minutes to update everything and then I was able to resume the game as usual.

So you will indeed need to go online for the update, after that you can go back to offline mode.
