I like the ammo count it makes you think about what you are doing. Learn not spray and pray. Learn to conserve ammo. If you are a Solider you have many weapons, if you are not you have these things called powers to use.

^ This.

I like the clips for this very reason. In ME1, I just sprayed everywhere. I'm not very good at shooters, so I just unloaded. With ME2, I had to stop and think, plan, strategize. It was much more fun.

I like the ammo system. Mass Effect 1 was just too easy once you got access to Frictionless Materials.

i hate, as i'm sure most people do,  limited ammo clips. it makes it a lot harder playing Insanity Level when you run out, and there NO spare clips laying around. can we get the over-heating/cooldown feature, and use augments to fix the weapon ourselfs, like in the first game?

Are you seriously complaining about the most difficult mode of play being difficult to play?

There's got to be a word for that. Oxymoron? No. Paradox? No not that. Strange? Yeah that's it.

Hilarious irony!

slap one of those on the Master Specter lv x assult rifle and you never have to worry about over heating (it causes no heat.)

was easier for me to get on ME1. give me an assault rifle, a sniper, and the right biotic abilities, and i'll tear **** up
yea i did insanity as a lv 1 solider no imports at all. I did fine, got thorugh it with very little choke points.(looking at you collector ship.) I ammo conserved and didnt run out of all my ammo at once, shocker.
i'm playing a solider, and got a second character as a sentinel. gets harder than hell to take down husks when heavy armored, and yes, i use powers the best i best when they're charging

That and I got tied of waiting for my gun to cool down.  Like the clips just fine.

Well like in the first game unlimited ammo will make any other weapon besides an assault rifle obsolete, in Mass Effect as long as you can use an assault rifle there's no reason to use any other weapon.....ever.

Agreed. Especially if you even tried to use the High Impact Rounds or whatever they are called. Two shots and boom overheat.

I prefer the no ammo weapons from ME1 myself. Not because of the difficulty problem, but because I find it annoying that we have ammo at all and that it was only implemented in ME2 because there was a big stink put up about it on the forums after ME1 was out and people saying "it's not realistic enough. give us an ammo feature". Feh... I hate it they retconned ME1 via ME2's ammo system.

My two cents.

I'm kind of expecting Zaeed to have something to say about this in ME3.

Just waxing gawd-damn nostalgic...

You were around when guns didn't use Thermal Clips right? Anyways I just remembered how I managed to ****** off an entire gang of Turians back on Omega this one time. Smug bastards cornered me into alleyway and I ended up taking cover behind a dumpster. I only had Jesse with me at the time. I think I must've killed 20 or so of the bastards from that spot alone. Not sure I could have managed to kill em' all relying on Thermal Clips looking back. Actually I probably would've gotten killed on lot of missions if I had to worry about looking for ammo. Hmm. Well they let me kill Vido so they can't be all bad I suppose...

I know I don't like Thermal Clips. But I don't think there's anything we can do about it now. The Devs have decided for better or for worse to stick with them. Unfortunately I play on the Xbox so I can't even really hold out hope for a mod someday.

Somehow I doubt ME3 will make me like them anymore. I'm guessing ME2 and ME3 are always going to be those two Redhead children of mine that look a lot more like the Milkman to me.

Nice!

OP, I'm not normally one to admonish someone for not using search or necroing a thread, but use the search!  There are plenty of threads already.

Getting rid of the unlimited ammo is a good thing.  Sniper rifles and assault rifles with unlimited ammo are just crazy.  I could maybe see giving pistols in ME3 unlimited ammo as a backup weapon.  Especially since all classes get to pick what weapon types to use, it would give someone a good reason to carry a pistol.  Regardless, clips are a part of ME3 and aren't going away.

wow, there are similar threads on Eidos' site. It's like DXHR comes out and everyone learns the word "augment", then uses it to death.

After DXHR... i have to say that i couldn't be happier with Mass Effect ammo system!!!   B)

I personally like the ammo system a bit better than ME1 (where we could just hold down the trigger for about five minutes and kill everything with ease with the right upgrades), but I agree that the weapons should still bleed off heat (i.e. regenerate ammo) if it's not being fired, or if it's holstered.

I preferred the overheat mechanic rather than the clips, but the clips aren't going anywhere, and I've resigned myself to it.I feel like I stay behind cover and let my team do more of the actual combat more in ME2 than I did in ME1, and that bugs me. It got really noticeable during Arrival, which took several times to get through because I didn't have the additional assistance of my party and felt like I was missing the enemies more often than I was hitting them. But that's the way that ME3's going to be, no way around it.

need to at least increase magazine, or ammo holding. some times the enemy's strength can out run your ammo

And that's when you switch guns, use your melee more or start using your powers more effectively.  I've never had a point on any playthrough with any class on Insanity where I had to stop and say "Hey, I have absolutely ZERO ammo left in all of my guns".

I have a feeling you're not efficiently managing your ammo or you're wasting a lot of time shooting at Shields/Armor instead of stripping it off with a well placed Squad Power or you're not making good use of Biotics for finishing stripped enemies.

Here's the thing, the reason I dislike the ammo system in ME1 is because of insanity, sometimes you would spend 5-10 minutes shooting a mini-boss because of their immunity spam. I understand making enemies tough, but spending an "x" amount of time on one enemy, while they run around in circles wasn't fun for me. Also, the whole issue with the heat management. I love the fact in the beginning of the game, that you couldn't just spray your bullets for a long period of time, but then when you got the frictionless material or whatever it was called, you could basically shoot forever, unless being hit by a sabotage. I understand that if you used biotics it made the game much easier, but otherwise the gameplay issues were related to the way the guns worked in ME1.

I'm not going to go into the "recton" or "lore-breaking" issue because that didn't bother me at all.

I prefer the ammo system because it makes me aware of when to shoot, if I want to use my powers and it fits the gameplay better in my opinion. It obviously comes down to individual taste, but I'm glad they're sticking with the ammo system.

Edit: Also, with the whole runing out of ammo issue or not being able to aim well.  Just practice, you may not be comfortable with using a controller or mouse, but it really isn't that difficult, once you get used to it.  And need be, lower the difficulty if needed, there's nothing wrong with that.  I know there was the whole "stats make you aim better, etc", but you still had to aim in ME1.

That's not the reason clips were implemented.  One of the gameplay designers did so as an experiment during development.  The Lead Designer, Preston Watamaniuk, then did a run using that system and decided it was a big improvement, at which point he took it to Casey Hudson, who tried it out for himself and agreed.

I like having ammo. If I wanted the game to be supremely easy and non-challenging, only then would I want to go back to inifinite ammo-land. Insanity is supposed to be the most difficult level...sorry that it's difficult???

They also said that they tried the "hybrid" system where chambered clips would cool over time and said that it was also inferior to the straight clips system we have now.

Weapon cooldown encourages players to spend more time in one cover spot waiting for the cooldown and not moving around the battlefield looking for more ammo.  It should be obvious why sitting in cover is less fun than actively moving.
