You probably selected the renegade options when speaking to her, she has claws if you do that, if you're neutral or nice to her though she's very friendly towards Shepard and even admires war hero Shepard.

Edit : Personally I'd choose tali. I had a save for ashley, but I accidentally "lost" it.

Say what? If we want to talk about "useful skillset" in ME1, soldier is way at the bottom of the list, and Tali's excellent for utility. As for cliches, they're both women trying to get out from under the shadows of their families in slightly different ways; I don't see how one is worse than the other. And romance paths... well, Tali's is bad to me, but only because of the abominable voice direction Maleshep gets, which doesn't quite manage to suck away what a huge step Tali is taking there. Not that Ashley's is bad, but there's no need to denigrate Tali because of it.Made Nightwing wrote...

Also not that warranted. I'll admit to the speciesism, but she's far from the worst about it and isn't ever hostile to Shepard unless she makes her be. I also never really thought of her as holier-than-though specifically.StarGateGod wrote...

Basically, I'm redoing my Mass Effect games for my new Xbox360.
I know how I'm going to play most of the decisions (Paragon with plenty of Renegade interrupts and cutting off the Council via comm link as well as general rude behavior), but there's the SMALL issue of who exactly will Gabriel Shepard end up with.
I don't like Jack, so that was never an issue.
Miranda is fine but Gabe would never end up with someone possessing even more neuroses than him.
What can I say, I'm not a big fan of Liara or blue in general, either.
So, that leaves Ashley and Tali who I have played through post romances for in previous games.
I can't decide whether to have Shepard choose Ashley and stay faithful, despite Miss Vas Normandy's crush on him or stick with the Quarian girl despite the vast chance of their relationship not suceeding. It's a tough call.
Sadly, I can't end up with Kelly.
This is the beauty of multiple playthoughs. I guess it really just depends on your Shepard. If you want a mature, equal, challenging, sometimes frustrating, yet ultimately satisfying grown up relationship with a flawed human being who doesn't simply worship the ground Shepard walks on - Ashley.
If you want a very cute, earnest, kind of shy inexperienced adorably dorky, xenophilic blushing girl next door to kind of hero worhip Shepard and be pretty submissive - Tali.
Both have their merits. I've personally only ever seen Tali as a little siter type, though PARTS of her romance in ME2 were very..."cute." Ash was more on the level of maturity with my Shep I think. That seemed more natural for me.
Like I said - MOAR PLAYTHROUGHS!

Then, in your next playthrough, go with Liara.
Then Ashley again.
Then Jack.
Then role up some FemSheps or modded gaySheps and romance Thane, Jacob and Garrus.
Then Miranda.
Then Tali I guess.
After that, roleplay a character who is based on Peter Abelard.

For the record: Soldier = Invincibility, extraordinary weapons damage, highly upgraded team effectiveness. Exceptionally useful. Tali in ME1 was pretty good, but her class in ME2 was almost as useless as Jacks. Even Jacob was more effective at dealing out damage and combos than Tali.
As for the rest, don't worry, I'm usually the one posting about equality between characters. But since that seemed like a bit of an overreaction to a bit of smack talk on the part of Requiem, I decided to come back with a bit of smack talk of my own.

Given that Ashley was nonexistent as a squadmate in ME2, I doubt the comparison is fair. For the record: Soldier = Invincibility, extraordinary weapons damage, highly upgraded team effectiveness. That's because Tali is needy. Perhaps the neediest character in all of ME. Moreover, every time she needed Shepard's help, she's in a disatrous situation because of her own incompetence or stupidity.Xilizhra wrote...

Lack of experience combined with entrapment.Citadel: "I guess I'll meet the Shadow Broker in person! I'm so excited!"
The Alliance already had the damned data; letting Tali have a copy wasn't going to ruin anything. In any case, a Spectre is allowed to do it.Armstrong Nebula: "Hey Shepard gimme those classified Geth data so I can help my dad kill the Geth! Never mind Alliance security protocols!"
It was mostly Prazza's squad and he was an idiot.Freedom's Progess: "ZOMG YMIR run away nao and let all my squad die!"
So you completely missed Kal'Reegar's repetitions of Tali being the most important person on the mission?Haelstrom: "ZOMG Colossus lock meself in room nao and let all my squad die!"
Ah, so you expect her to have foreseen her admiral father to be a master war criminal?Flotilla: "I'll just send Geth parts to dad. Whatever he's doing must be for the best! If I screw up, Shepard will lie for me! Yaaaaaay!"
