in my experience with the game so far i have found it impossible to win most fights without some sort of potions. i either need a crap load of health pots so i don't die or i need a crap load of mana pots so my healer can heal so i don't die.

On Normal I managed to make it through 95% of the game without a healer or using potions. The only fights I had to potion pop on were dragons.

is that so.

I don't have to "too often" and I've only played the game on Nightmare so try this.

Build your Healer's willpower and your Tanks Constitution to about 25 as soon as possible. then focus on the other stats. Health/mana/stamina increases by 5 per point (Dur, you already knew that) but also increases every level on a value based on them. So the sooner you get those higher,t he more mana you'll have in the long run. This observation has served me well enough so far having the Endurance to not use any potions in all but the most difficulty battles. Multiple forms of Crowd Control help a swell. Sleep-Paralyze is an amazing combo. These proved the life savers in the Denerim city battles. If there isn't an Elite Boss on the field, I rarely use more than 2(T1) mana potions in a battle (Varying with amount of targets). Highly dependant on remembering to turn off Combat magic (Arcane Warrior) or Haste for Elite boss battles.

That is so. Nightmare is a bit harder though. So far I had to use 3 lesser health potions to beat the Ogre.

I think it's something more.  Yes, potions are always there but there are definitely ways to play beyond the old stigma of potion popping.  Chances are your not going to get through without using potions until you start to learn and accept the way the game was designed.  Once that happens you can start to see the beauty in the game.  Currently, I feel if I had to use a potion, even just one, then I screwed up.

I relegate the successfulness of my character build and party combination relevant to how many potions I have to use.

Get the Hardcore Mod

http://social.bioware.com/project/493/

On Nightmare difficulty you can't use potions at all.

Retarded mod.

Is potion popping supposed to be bad or something?

One way or another, you abuse something no matter what you do or use. Overpowered skills, potions, limited A.I. exploit, you name it, it's just another way to get through the game and potions are no different than the rest.

I see.

Then what happened, did the Ogre choke on a corpse?

Umm no. I had the mage cast Paralyze with my rogue backstabbing, and Alistar+Dog doing dps. Then when Paralyze wore off I used stun. Then had Alistar use his stun. Then Dog use his Stun. Then I Alistar tanked for a while and had to pop two potions and I had to pop one. Then he died.

Maybe they are just better at this game than you are.

No resists on Nightmare?

You are lucky.

Yep, Bioware screwed up when they created the lore. They should have made a healing tree for each class. I can think of tons of specializations that could have made characters more self reliant and less potion reliant, Paladins, Clerics, Priests, Alchemist, Medic, Blood-sucking vampires, etc.

Instead you gotta bring a healing mage or lots of potions.

Would be easy for them to add such things as specializations. Paladin would be nice.

I havn't found i've had to use healing pots that much, usually i can get by a group on hard with my 3 mages and liliana without having to use any potions. I fight using Morigan on CC, Winn on Heals, Me on AOE DPS and lilianna there to watch :)

Three mages?

I would hate to be the enemy.

Well a stun or two did get resisted and the mage did die because apparently there is no tactic for "your a squshy mage and there is a guy in melee with you, run away!"

I like potions.

I hate healing classes (and casters in general), so I can play this game without them, like I did in Baldur's Gate series.

Seriously? I'm not just being a douche but on my mage playthrough I haven't had to use a pot yet (that's not a surprise I guess) but on my warrior I have honestly made like 20 pots other than the ones I found and have used like 11

idk how people could have so much trouble with this game if they know it's not a hack and slash...

I do somehow miss the point why exactly popping potions is a bad thing......
