Hey guys :)

On my current hard play through, I look to be using a dual-wield warrior DPS, an Allistair tank, and leliana as an archer, along with morrigan.

I like to swap my dps-warrior and tank-allistair to bows when I'm using Blizzard on a ranged group to take them out.

What type of bow do I want for each?

Ie: Which stats does each favor. Is one for strength-heavier charactes and one for dexterity heavier characters?

Avoiding installing the hotfix for now, but might be persuaded to do so. Difficulty isn't seeming so bad now that I'm on my second playthrough (merely on hard for full AI without complete suffering :P).

get the best longbow you can equip. for a DW warrior you'll have high enough dex to equip even tier 7 longbows so no problem there. my favorite bows are Mage's Eye or Falon'Din's Reach. both have great stats.

alistair will probably have 26 dex for his shield talents so he can equip tier 4 longbows with that i think. you can get a nice whitewood bow or something, its more than adequate for occasional sniping into a blizzard.

in either case longbows DO gain attack and damage bonuses from strength so warriors can use them very well.

if you've installed the hotfix Shortbows will gain bonuses exclusively from Dex so if you have a very high dex char (the DW warrior might qualify) a Shortbow might work as well, however, i'd still be inclined to favor the longbow simply for the longer effective range.

Do Leliana's personal quest.

I agree with metatrans here as well. Consider picking up Scattering Shot to tag enemies who initially resist being frozen by Blizzard, stunning and forcing them to make make several more resistance checks.

Thanks very much guys.

Just curious, shortbows seem to be for dex (post hot-fix/design intent), longbows for strength; where do crossbow's fit in?

Longbows are 50/50 strength and dexterity for damage, just as are shortbows. For accuracy, however, it is 100% dexterity. The hotfix changes shortbows to 100% dexterity for damage, basically doubling their damage for a dexterity-based character (in addition to other hotfix damage bonuses).

Crossbows are supposed to be 100% dexterity for damage and accuracy, but they are bugged and gain no bonus to damage, period.

I'm not certain...  Off hand, they seem to have much better base damage, and armour penetration.

Does the hotfix, then, make shortbows not use any strength? Or is it 100% dex + 50% strength?

And the hotfix ignores crossbows?

The hotfix makes shortbows not use any strength. I am unsure whether or not crossbows are addressed in the hotfix.

After the hotfix:

shortbows use 100% dex with a 1.0 multiplier

longbows use 50% strength, 50% dex with a 1.05 multiplier

crossbows use 100% dex with a 1.1 multiplier

The point of crossbows is to be a simple and usable method of ranged damage for a melee warrior; they require high strength to wield, but get a high dex modifier to damage. Shortbows are for dedicated archers. Longbows are for rogues who arch from time to time, as they practically need lethality to make the most out of them, which has two prereq talents of questionable use to a ranged attacker.

So wait, without the hotfix, are longbows better or worse than shortbows?

Crossbows also have knockback bolts, which are just awesome.

knockback bolts would be way cooler if there were more than like 80 of them in the whole game.

A answer would be appreciated: what's better without the hotfix? Longbows or shortbows? I'm asking because I have the 360, so no hotfix.

I thought that all ranged weapons — with the exception of staves and bombs — draw their attack (accuracy) score exclusively from the dexterity attribute and specific talents.

Ba-bump. I'm still wondering what's better on the 360, shortbows or longbows.

For your scenario a Longbow would be best, I myself go shortbow only if my character is dedicated archer, longbow's are for the occasional archer imho.

Since longbow on the non-dexfix'd version of the game gets all of it's damage bonus from strength, you are best served making a cunning based rogue and using Lethality, you actually get a bigger boost to damage than you would in a dexfix'd game.

Too bad Lethality`s main bonus doesn`t apply to ranged weapons /:

But it should, description says "bonus to critical chance for all attacks".

Who/what says it doesn't?

Are you sure? I hope not because that would really rain on my parade.

Correct - currently Lethality's critical bonus [10% IIRC] is melee only :( So the only real benefit for a ranged character is allowing all the cunning to operate as the str bonus instead, which DOES make a sizeable damage difference especially for a high dex/cun rogue like Leliana or a PC main specced that way.
