So...archery is basically useless without the hotfix then?

Leliana is perfectly fine without the hotfix, if you get Lethality.

A Dex/Cun build does the job with her Tier 7 exclusive bow.

Cunning and Strength archery builds are nerfed by the hotfix, it is by no means worthless. Just don't go pure dexterity, _that_ is worthless. (before and after the hotfix!)

So, speaking strictly pre-hotfix-wise, if I wanted to go onto archery. I would have to go strength? Or does having high cunning help out with bow damage?

Cunning with the Lethality (rogue) talent, or Strength will both give good results with a longbow. (better than intended results)

Why use a long bow at all? A crossbow will have a str requirement which the warriors should be able to meet and has a higher base critical chance which is good to cause the Shatter effect on frozen enemies.

Because the longbows in the game are far superior to every shortbow and crossbow available.

This. Especially if you get Far Song.

Nothing even comes close to Far Song. Pity to get it requires you to be a dick -_-

I totally missed Far Song--where do you pick it up?

I have not acquired it myself, but will be on my next rogue-archer playthrough.

Apparently you need to let Owen [Redcliffe] kill himself [I'm guessing lie about not finding his daughter/her being dead] and the new Blacksmith who shows up when Landsmeet is called, will have the bow for sale.

I'm guessing it costs 80g+ like most of the other "epic" items in the game.

Stats:

Far Song

Category: Weapon
Type: Longbow
Material: Dragonthorn (Tier 7)

Damage: 9.60
Critical Chance: 1.60%
Armor Penetration: 8.80
Strength Modifier: 1.00
Range: 46

Installation: Base Installation
+2 Damage
Rapid Aim (-0.3 seconds)
+3% Ranged Critical Chance
+10 Attack
+10% Critical/Backstab Damage
Requires: 34 Dexterity

Sitting
in the back of a shop, for decades this bow gathered dust instead of
victories. It almost hums with a mysterious power. Its history is no
doubt long and varied, but sadly that tale has been lost to the ravages
of time.

Oh, so Lethality  does affect bows then? I keep hearing different answers.

I think you're confusing the answers :)

There are 2 major benefits for Lethality. A crit bonus and the ability to use cunning instead of str. One of these, the cun for str bonus, works on bows and is very noticeable if you have pumped cunning. The other bonus, the crit %, is currently only working for melee, not for ranged.

Oh wow, now I feel silly. Thanks for explaining!

Yes, but it was my understanding that the original poster did not want to use the weapon as mostly a source of damage, but as something to do out of blizzard range.

Hence, my comment about the higher crit rate because a crit for even a few pts of damage on a frozen minion will shatter them.

If you are making a dedicated archer, then that's another story entirely, but it appeared to me that he just wanted to set up his normal warriors so that they could contribute under the above circumstances rather than sit there looking stupid.

You can kill him yourself when you are supposed to get his help for the Redcliffe militia. Just threaten him and give jerk answers and an option along the lines of "I could just kill you, then" will come up. Kill him, help the milita survive the night, and a new blacksmith with the far song will be in his shop. You can get it right after lothering this way.

Getting far song so early in the game is REALLY helping my rogue archer solo nightmare.

Good to know. I think I'll drop my party members for that. I need to figure out a real reason my character would off the guy xD

How come? Pure Dex is by far the most survivable build. The Attack Accuracy is great also. And after the hotfix you can just equip a Shortbow and do great damage.
