I've been reflecting on this DLC announcement this afternoon, and figured a little feedback might be valuable. (Or it might not, but here it is anyway, as is the nature of BSN.)
Having throughly enjoyed DA2 and Legacy, and being in the mindset of looking forward to both another DLC and some other extras, like DG's novel, learning that Tallis would actually be a playable character turned me right off.
(Note. I've enjoyed watching maybe 50% The Guild and I think Felicia Day is a clever and insightful gamer/actress. It's not a problem with her, in the slightest.)
So, (and not all of these reasons are entirely rational.)
- Traditionally, NPCs in party RPGs have been left largely to the imagination. There's no Anomen movie to challenge my unique perception of him, over the years. I experienced Anomen on entirely my own terms (within the structure of whoever wrote him, obviously, but still.)
- I play games (esp SP) to get away from real people, not see people I recognise in game. (Nice as any actor might be.)
- I can't really engage with celebrity culture, in general. There's enough of "wow, he/she is cool/special" in real life. Rightly or wrongly, for me, Talllis is probably going to feel more special than Hawke (;me). (Although I guess Hawke was never really me, like other PCs have been.)
- The only comparible examples I can think of conjure unfavourable comparisons, for me; Sims 2 celebrity machinima, the entire interactive movie genre.
A friend did point me to Omikron: The Nomad Soul, which apparently has two David Bowie cameos. And I love David Bowie. Especially in tights. But, would having him play a companion in a party based RPG draw my attention to him the entire time? I suspect I'd be starstruck and very distracted.
Now, having said all of this. I was very, very sure I wasn't going to enjoy DAII before I played it, and I did. There's a fair chance qunari related story and variations on gameplay could carry me through this one, anyway. And, I'd never want to detract from experimentation in gaming.
Also, I can vaguelly imagine some ways in which this could actually work really cleverly. Like, if the Tallis character was highly notorious (like, Hawke and everyone had heard grand tales of her and seen her face on posters) that "I recognise your face" thing might support that brilliantly. Or if she were a real "look at me" character, like when Phoebe from Friends' actress did that kind of character in The Simpsons.
Prior to playing, obviously, I can picture this "character based on an actress" thing ruining the DLC for me, but I'm quite a deliberatly open minded gamer, so I'm interested to see if that's actually the case, or if I find that it works.
